OUT 368--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?

TIME FOR OUT TOWN

AND I REGRET TO SAY

THIS WILL BE THE LAST POSTING

OF OUTTOWN.

IT HAS BEEN A GREAT

2 and a HALF YEARS,

BUT I THINK ITS TIME TO CALL IT QUITS.

SO TO ALL MY FANS………

APRIL FOOL!

I COULDN’T RESIST. LOL

But on a serious note, this weekend is the weekend where all of us who live on this planet should take some time to remember the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who was assassinated April 4, 1968. This Friday will commemorate the 40th anniversary of his passing in this life.

OK now to the STL Newz

The big story has been the rain (AGAIN) and its effects on the area, especially the city’s pastime, baseball. Monday's season-opener at Busch Stadium between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies was postponed due to rain. The rains held off for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Colorado Rockies to score four times in their first inning Monday afternoon, but the opener was interrupted by a rain delay in the third inning. The game was interrupted by rain in the bottom of the third inning, with Wainwright at bat with one out and Cesar Izturis at first after a walk. The rain delay began at 4:16 p.m., with radar showing a heavy band of rain stretching back west of Jefferson City. The introductions took about 15 minutes, beginning with Hall of Famer Lou Brock riding the Anheuser-Busch beer wagon pulled by the Clydesdale team of horses. Three other Redbird Hall of Famers — Ozzie Smith, Red Schoendienst and Bob Gibson — were introduced before La Russa and his players circled the field in convertibles before their names were announced at home plate. The biggest cheers came for first baseman Albert Pujols and 87-year-old Hall of Famer Stan Musial (PICTURED ABOVE) who was unable to take part in the parade but waved to the crowd from a party suite behind home plate. The game was rescheduled for Tuesday evening at 8:15 p.m. (et) when both teams were scheduled to be idle. No Clydesdale or convertibles. No success, either for the St. Louis Cardinals in their rescheduled home opener. Third baseman Troy Glaus' throwing error allowed the tying run to score and Jayson Nix walked with the bases loaded in a two-run eighth inning, helping the Colorado Rockies begin the defense of their NL championship with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. The Cards has two more chances to get a win when they play the Rockies today and Thursday. And heavy rain is in the forecast for Thursday, too. Oh-oh........................................
Mo rain. Mo rain. Mo rain. St. Louis set a record last month of inches of rain with 8.39 inches of rain breaking the record that wa sset in March 1897! To add more inches, The St. Louis area will be on a Flood watch until this weekend. Is it time to build an Arc or what?....................................
And what was up with the earthquake that hit Popular Bluff. Mo? It was a small earthquake there Monday morning that wasn't strong enough to cause any damage.
The quake registered at 2.8 magnitude. The New Madrid Faults I’m sure won’t be far long from shakin up the STL if that’s the case.........................................

Well, the pride in the city was lowered last weekend as STL boxer Cory Spinks lost. Dubbed the The Pride of ST. Louis, in front of more than 8,000 fans on a Don King promotion at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, IBF Light Middleweight Champion Cory Spinks was outworked by 38 year old three time former world champion Verno Phillips, who scored a split decision upset victory by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 113-115. “I felt good, just a little rusty that’s all,” said Cory Spinks. “Verno fought a good fight. He came in to do a job, but I feel I did what I came to do. I am upset with myself. I let myself down.” Cory Spinks was fighting for the first time in 10 months when he lost to the 38-year-old Phillips, also coming off a long layoff and fighting for the first time in 13 months. All wasn’t lost when Unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Devon Alexander comfortably defeated Panamanian veteran and fellow southpaw Miguel Callist over twelve rounds to retain his WBC Continental Americas 140lb title. This fight was a losing battle on many levels,. One, he cut ties with his longtime manager and trainer Kevin Cunningham, a few weeks prior to the fight AND the fight was the lowest participated fight of all the fights Spinks has had in St. Louis ( It was reported that thousands of tickets were given out the night of the fight and from a reliable source, “you couldn't pay people to take them (tickets)” OUCH.) No wonder Spinks didn’t feel like partying after his loss. He was suppose to be at several afterparties at several clubs in the STL but he was a no show at all of them. I think the party overall with Spinks is pretty much over.

As OUTTOWN reported last week, former Cards team prez Mark Lamping resigned after the Centene Corporation backed out of the Ballpark Village project in the old spot where Busch Stadium once resided causing the delay of the project beginning (and from reprts, was sent off ceremoniously last Saturday at the brand new Champions Club at the Stadium) . Well, one politician is pissed off of the delay. In a formal statement, Comptroller Darlene Green (PICTURED) said, "Now that Centene has officially pulled out of Ballpark Village, the Cardinals and city leaders need to focus on removing the unsightly hole in the middle of our downtown and preparing for the 2009 All-Star Game. The 2009 All-Star Game and related events are quickly approaching, along with the inevitable worldwide media exposure. We cannot afford to have primetime television broadcasts featuring a downtown St. Louis with a six block muddy hole broadcast all over the world. The Cardinals and the city owe the taxpayers and fans something much better. Work needs to start now on a plan to put St. Louis' best foot forward during All-Star week. The Ballpark Village site needs to be an exciting place. Even if it is paved over to create a celebratory venue for the thousands of baseball fans descending on our city, it will show a downtown central business district that is vibrant instead of stagnant," said Darlene Green. As of this writing, the Board of Alderman were in talks on signing a deal for the Village to be completed in 2014 before penalties would ensue.....................................................Keep on truckin—Not. Truckers across the country, including the STL, parked their rigs Tuesday in protest of high diesel prices. In some places diesel costs more than $4 per gallon. Now, many independent truckers are now uniting, spreading word through blogs and c.b. radios that Tuesday through April 3rd they plan to strike. The truckers say after paying their truck note and paying for fuel, there’s nothing left to support their families. They are working more and making less due to the high price of diesel.

Just as OUTTOWN was going to post, the story of a descendent to St. Louis’ beer empire had got arrested. Seventeen-year-old Adolphus August Busch the Fifth was arrested with eight other teens at an apartment party in Godfrey last Wednesday accused of underage drinking. Busch is the grandson of the late August Busch Junior, but his parents don't work for the brewery. The Busch family isn't commenting. The St. Louis-based brewing company also isn't weighing in, saying it has no involvement in the matter. Investigators say the group was drinking Natural Light -- an Anheuser Busch product -- and rum. Busch is free on $100 bond. This is too much playin for real. To get busted drinking your kin folk’s product and mixing with a non-Busch product???? Get him the electric chair ! LOL

Officials in East St. Louis are trying to rally support for the city's only full-scale hospital. The Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation wants to merge some services at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital with another hospital it owns in Centreville. About 250 people turned out last Sunday for a demonstration at Kenneth Hall. They called on officials to turn down the merger request when a state panel takes up the matter next week. The foundation says Kenneth Hall is losing $3 million a year. Organizers of Sunday's rally called on pastors to urge people to take part in a bus trip to Springfield next Monday for the hearing.

The slots at the Casino are starting to tighten with cigarette
smoke. The Casino Queen's business is down, and it blames Illinois' smoking ban. Initially, the $92 million new casino, which opened last summer on the East St. Louis riverfront, reportedly saw revenues increase from the smaller boat, but business has declined since Jan. 1 when the state's ban on smoking in public places took effect. According to reports, revenue jumped 25 percent --to $18 million --after the new casino opened in July and stabilized at $17 million during the following months. In January, when the new law went into effect, the casino's revenues fell to $13 million a month. February's revenues bottomed out at $14 million, and March is projected to be the same................Also on the East Side, the woman from Belleville who was charged in leaving her toddler walking in the streets of the city Is the wife of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq. Thelma M. Straughter’s husband was Spc. Matthew Straughter, 27, died in Iraq Jan. 31 after a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle (GO TO OUT 331-STL-TIDBITZ AND MORE to see his pic) . She has been charged with child endangerment after her toddler son was found outside wearing only a diaper. Police said they aren't sure how the boy got out of the house. Straughter is free on bond and her children have been placed in foster care..........................

Former St. Louis Rams defensive lineman Tyoka Jackson was ordered by a federal jury to pay a flight attendant $3,000 for pushing him on a plane. Jurors last Wednesday ordered Jackson to pay Northwest Airlines attendant Gary Rihn to cover medical expenses for the 2005 incident. The flight attendant had originally asked for over $1 million, but Jackson claimed that he only acted after the flight attendant poked and prodded him. Now that this is settled, Jackson can work in broadcasting. Tyoka Jackson launched the attendant off his feet and caused serious harm in a confrontation aboard a Memphis-to-St. Louis flight.Jackson was upset because the attendant asked him to stow a laptop bag under the first-class seats. I wonder if Jackson got a flashback on the field trying to win a game last season when this all got ugly? Hmmm....................................................St. Louis and model mogul Kimora Lee Simmons is mos def getting her share of spotlight in the newz lately, First was her now famous arrival to her hometown three weeks ago to launch STL Fashion Week and to receive accolades for her accomplishments, then she was reported as saying that she was going to stuff her late dog like a diamond and lastly just last week Kimora Lee Simmons made it official by filing for divorce from her husband of seven years, entertainment mogul Russell Simmons. Although the couple separated in March 2006, Kimora Lee Simmons just filed divorce papers in Los Angeles Superior Court. The 32-year-old Baby Phat fashion designer and reality TV star cited irreconcilable differences. She and Russell Simmons, 50, have two daughters: 8-year-old Ming Lee and 5-year-old Aoki Lee. Kimora Lee Simmons is seeking legal and physical custody of the children. She requested that Russell Simmons be granted "reasonable child visitation ... accompanied at all times by the children's nanny and security personnel." Must be nice to be fabulous and dictate what will be!

Actor and rapper and actor Mos Def is set to play STL rocker Chuck Berry in a new film about the legendary record label Chess Records. "Cadillac Records," written and directed by Darnell Martin. It is set in the 1950s and will follow the lives of Leonard Chess, the man who founded Chess Records, and some of its famous artists. If you look at the pics, Mos Def does have a slight resemblance of the rock pioneer. What you think?

Rapper Nelly is set to collaborate with legendary rocker Bruce Springsteen on his forthcoming album. He has approached Springsteen about making a record together - and the veteran singer is more than happy to oblige. Scheduling difficulties made it impossible to get the song recorded in time for Nelly's latest LP "Brass Knuckles," which will be released in July but the hip-hop star is determined to make the collaboration happen later this year, and possibly feature the track on a special edition of the album. He says, "We still might get a chance to get it off. We're saving it. We might repackage it for the holidays." Nelly's new record already features collaborations with artists including Fergie (on the first official single, (“Party People”), Akon, Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J. This CD has been delayed since December 2007, lets hope it was worth the wait! ..............................Remember the film "Meet Bill" that was filmed in St. Louis two years ago (specifically at
Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS) and Washington University in St. Louis.) when its stars including Jessica Alba were here to film it? Well, the flick is set to be released in limited releaase April 4 (and nationwide May 9). What's interesting about this flick is, it isnt set in St. Louis (the setting is Minnesota) , but STLers will be able to detect the two schools that were used for the flick. Last chekced the film will be shown at Wehrenberg St. Charles Stadium 18 Cine. To see a preview go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya_FjeTf8Dk

Local pastor, Bishop Giovanni Johnson was charged last week with multiple sexual offenses after prosecutors say he had a relationship with a 15 year old church member. Investigators say the pastor began having sex with the victim when she was only 14 years old and did not stop for at least eight months. Johnson is charged with 12 counts of 2nd degree statutory rape and sodomy of the 15 year old girl. Sources say that none of the alleged sexual assaults happened at the church, but the victim is a member of the church and has given a detailed account to police. Johnson was living in north St. Louis County at a Super 8 Motel on St. Charles Rock Road. Johnson's bond is set at $350,000 in cash. Johnson serves as a pastor of the Victory in Praise Tabernacle Church in the 1400 block of Goodfellow. Johnson's wife, Monica is a co-pastor at the church..........................................Why did KMOX personalities ‘ John Carney and Jon Grayson’s weeknight radio show Two Johns No Waiting stop airing? They both now have separate shows that are back to back now. Hmmm............................................................ Former St. Louis American Fashion Editor and UMA Worldwide PR’s Keith Underwood is gearing up to do a podcast on Black Hollywood News. He will be hosting a new feature called Lets Do Lunch where he talks to up and coming artists in entertainment. He will tape the episodes on April 11 and will be podcast around April 18. To peep out the site go to http://www.blkhollywoodnews.com/....................................................Who won the Praise Alive! Talent search that was held last weekend Abundant Life Fellowship Church with Donnie McClurkin as judge?.....................................Local modeling agency Xcel got a new monthly website called "XCEL Stars" from Xcel Models, LLC. It talks about the ins and outs of the STl fashion and modeling biz from an urban perspective. To peep it out go to http://www.starsofxcel.com/..........................................

IN THE MIA (MISSING IN ACTION) FILE— What happened to STL radio personality Lizz Brown?
Well, she has been found. Accoridng to her wensite http://www.lizzbrown.com/ she gives a details account of her mssing in action.
Here is what she had to say to her fans:
To My Dear listeners, fans and supporters,
First of all I want to thank you for your outpouring of love and support. It has been amazing. Thank you all so much for all of your kind words. I also find myself in the unusual position of thanking some of those who were in opposition to many of my issues and positions — I was shocked but you too have reached out to me in support and with the some of the same questions and concerns. So, to all of my opponents — thank you too.
Many of you want to know where I am, what I am doing, when I will be back on the air and all of the details of the selling of the station. As you know by not being able to listen, I am no longer on the air at WGNU. I have to say it was a little strange at first — I had been doing it for so long. But once the station was sold, I chose to take another non-WGNU path.
I did not want to go back on the air, nor did I want to pursue having a radio presence at the newly pseudo-Christian-rock/gospel/music WGNU so I am in negotiations with another entity. I will let you know as soon as the details have been finalized. I have also taken this time to do something that has always had my heart — I have been writing. I am now a columnist for BlackAgendaReport.com.
And no, she isn’t working at Hardees.

OUTTOWN also found STL videographer Pete Foggy. He is currently doing his thing at STL-TV and recently did taping at last week’s STL Fashion week festivities.
BLIND BITZ—Which popular nightspot’s owner is ready to sell its venue to the top bidder? (HINT. Its not The Loft and this spot had the crunkest night prior to the weekend putting everybody on pins and needles.
