OK now the newz:

Well this week for sure, its all about the Democratic National Convention in Denver Colorado and Chicago Senator Barack Obama accepting the nomination for President. Obama’s wife Michelle(a first for the Democratic Convention) presented a moving speech about her and her husbands background, Barack’s speaking at the convention via satellite from Kansas City after he watched his wife’s convention address from the home of Jim and Alicia Girardeau in Kansas City (and did yawl catch the infamous Ooops when he said that he was in St. Louis and his younger daughter asked him where he was and he said Kansas City? Priceless)

To watch Michelle Obama’s enigmatic speech go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la4b_NgEro4

Missouri State Senator and Barack supporter Clair McCaskill spoke (but didn’t get any national coverage unfortunately) at the Convention. To watch Clair McCaskill’s speech go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mz7jY1ePmM

Meanwhile, Sen. Barack Obama, who will be at the Convention on Thursday, spoke to supporters in a plane hanger during in Kansas City on Monday. To check it out go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xauuo1CvexE
And to watch Barack via satellite at teh Convention from Kansas City go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP6ZtReH5Tk&feature=related

And what’s up with these Barack death plotters? They just arrested a fourth suspect this week in Denver. Last weekend, a group of suspected drug users arrested in Denver over the weekend with guns and bullet-proof vests made racist threats against Barack Obama but posed no real danger to the Democratic presidential candidate. The three men - all said to have been high on methamphetamine when arrested - are the subject of an assassination investigation, but so far, authorities say, it appears they had no capacity to carry out any attack on Obama.

Yeah, and a yawn cant be contagious.
Meanwhile, Republican Presidential candidate John McCain will stump in O’Fallon, Mo., this Sunday as he travels to battleground states ahead of next week's Republican National Convention. The rally will be at 2 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, 900 T.R. Hughes Blvd., according to McCain’s campaign Web site. Seating is first come, first served. Vice Presidential candidates Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will join the Arizona senator. McCain’s wife, Cindy, also plans to attend.

In local politics,
Mayor Francis Slay also got in some newz time this week. First, Slay signed an Executive Order barring the non-emergency purchase of bottled water by City government. The Order will help the environment by reducing the amount of plastic trash City Hall discard and save taxpayers approximately $25,000. But, the real purpose of the Order according to Slay “is call attention to a resource. We have an abundant supply of high-quality water in the City. That seems like something that might be taken for granted. But, it isn’t and we don’t. Thanks to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers — and thanks to the hard work of the people in our Water Division — we have a lot of water and a lot of clean water. Under former director Dave Visitainer and now with Curtis Skouby, our Water Division is a world class operation.” In other words, $25 grand will be used for “other expenses.” Hmm, we wonder who will pocket I mean be granted that gift. LOL.

Second, the effort to boot St. Louis mayor Francis Slay from office is failing badly. Opponents who claimed they could get more than enough signatures to force a recall vote, now admit they're not even close. The effort to boot St. Louis Mayor from office is failing badly. Opponents who had predicted they could get more than enough signatures to force a recall vote, now admit they're not even close. After close to 10 months of collecting signatures, they are only about a third of the way of there. The door-to-door signature effort has now been suspended. We are sure Rebel Rousers Zaki Baruti and Anthony Shahid are somewhere cussin in a corner somewhere for sure.

Then, there were talk of the possible Mayoral campaign for current License Collector Mike McMillan as a possible challenger to Slay who has raised a milli for his re-election campaign (his second term ends March 2009). Rumor has it that McMillan could be in the running cuz he is the closest of having at least a six figure funds to run. Others who were speculate din running were former Fire Chief Sherman George and current Comptroller Darlene Green, but that was all it was hear say. It would be interesting if McMillan could run. He does have a certain Barack quality to himself. LOL.

Carjacking Gone Wrong at the Square? A woman getting her two young children out of the car at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights fended off a woman who pulled a gun on her in broad daylight and demanded the vehicle. The suspect fled in a getaway car driven by man, and the mom suffered minor injuries in what police described as a scuffle. The children were not injured. The mother parked her vehicle about 7 p.m. last Friday in the south Sears parking lot at the mall and was preparing to get her two toddlers out their car seats and out of the car when a four-door, charcoal gray Pontiac Grand Prix with Missouri tags pulled up behind her and a woman jumped out. Reports say after the vehicle pulled up on her, the passenger exited. The female approached the victim, pulled a gun on her and demanded her keys. The children were in their car seats, and the victim was accosted as she was getting them out of the car.The victim resisted, and there was a scuffle. The victim received very minor injuries that required no treatment. After the scuffle, the suspect got back into the car and they fled the area. The suspect is described as a black woman, around 25 years old, 5-feet, 5-inches with a thin build and wearing bright-colored clothing From the victim report, eyewitness reports and video, it twas a random crime. Now our thing is, why did the female do all the work and not the man? And, why didn’t she us ethe gun if she was that ride or die? This is too out of there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shocker earlier in the week was the arrest and a guilty plea of Robert Brodzin a Shiner who embezzled funds from the Shriner Hospital for children for his leisure.Prosecutors said Brodzin scammed Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis for the last four years, costing the hospital $828,973. They said he used company credit cards for thousands of dollars in personal expenses, wrote checks on a duplicate account, and created three "dummy" companies that did not exist and used them to bill the hospital for goods and services that were never provided. .
Investigators said Brodzin used the money to buy two Hummer SUVs, a Corvette and a BMW. They said he bought a condo in Florida, took a Las Vegas vacation, purchased golf and health club memberships and season tickets for pro sports teams. Well as they always say, just when you think you wont get caught…..:

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout and signed a six-year, $44 million contract, ending a 27-day holdout. The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13. The Rams cut off negotiations in late July on the first day of training camp after Jackson's agent, Eugene Parker, turned down a deal the team said would have put Jackson in the top echelon at his position. At that time, Jay Zygmunt, the Rams' president of football operations, said there would be no further talks until the running back reported. Jackson had a physical last Thursday morning and made it onto the practice field. On whether Jackson will be ready for On if RB
Steven Jackson will be ready in time for Kansas City on Aug. 28) he said, “The tough part is we’ve got a limited week. We’re not going to be able to go out there and get out in full pads like a whole week of practice, enough to really get him as ready as you’d like for the game, but he will take snaps with, not only the first unit, but the second unit and the third unit, just to catch up on plays. Yeah, we do have a plan, just like we did when he got in. He’s had three straight days of working extra with his pads on and going out and running plays and doing all that while the other players aren’t out there. We’ve just got to keep accelerating and buying time whenever we can get time. And he’ll get a really good workout if he doesn’t play much or at all, I don’t know we haven’t decided.”

We are willing to bet he will, but then again, hasn’t Jackson pretty much wrote his own meal ticket on whether he wants to play or not?

Seven-thousand students in the St. Louis Public Schools did not attened the first day of school last Monday. 7,000 kids out of a projected enrollment of 28,000 stayed home Monday.Rick Sullivan, the chief executive officer of the St. Louis Public Schools, announced the attendance rate last Wednesday in a joint press conference with the man who last year appointed him to head the schools, Gov. Matt Blunt. A quarter of the students expected in class stayed home Monday despite back-to-school rallies and district participation this year in a national campaign encouraging fathers to walk their children to the first day of school. Monday's attendance notwithstanding, Sullivan called the local "Million Fathers March" a success. So much so, he added, that the district is asking fathers to walk their children to classes on the first day of the month throughout the school year. Meanwhile, the three members of the Special Administrative Board Melanie Adams, Richard Gaines, Rick Sullivan are still in negotiations in finding a replacement for the latest occupant of the superintendent's office, Diana Bourisaw,. identifying the finalists who will meet with the board, and then the public, at some point this summer. Melanie Adams, the administrative board member heading the search for a leader to succeed Bourisaw, says all options are on the table, including the possibility that a noneducator will soon occupy the top job in St. Louis. Or have that person been announced?

L. Thomas Lakin, a politically powerful lawyer with fading influence in Madison County, is set to plead guilty to federal drug charges on Sept. 3 in a plea bargain that avoids any reference to previous sex counts. According to a proposed plea agreement and "stipulation," or document where a defendant states wrongdoing, Lakin, 68, will plead guilty to possession with intent to deliver cocaine, distributing cocaine to a person under 21, and keeping premises where drugs were used. The stipulation stated that one count charges Lakin with providing cocaine to a person under 18. In exchange, charges that Lakin took a minor boy from Illinois to California for sexual purposes would be dropped. He previously pleaded not guilty to all counts. The 16-page plea agreement, filed Monday, also calls for Lakin to be fined $20,000 and to turn over $325,000 in lieu of forfeiting his residence, and to pay $180,000 to an Illinois charity as restitution.

Governor Blunt issued a word of warning for the St. Louis police board as it searches for a new police chief in the midst of the ongoing towing scandal. Blunt urged the board to do their homework in the search for the new chief. The search now includes 13 candidates. Members of the police board are well on their way to picking a new chief, despite the concerns of the governor and the police officers union.
There is a federal investigation underway into the use of seized vehicles by members of the police department, and even former chief Joe Mokwa's daughter.
The board hopes to have a decision by October. No word yet on when the federal investigation into the towing scandal will be over.

Southern rapper Lil Wayne, who has sold over 2 million albums this summer with Tha Carter III, brings his charismatic style to the new Chaifetz Arena this Saturday at Saint Louis University. Lil Wayne has dominated the Billboard charts this year with his June release of Tha Carter III, which sold over one million copies in its first week, a feat that had not been accomplished by any artist since 50 Cent three years ago. Three singles from Tha Carter III have all peaked in the Top 13 of the Billboard 100 including “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” and “Got Money.” According to Rolling Stone, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop” smashed records as the fastest selling ringtone in history. Well we hope he is going to show up cuz according to MediaTakeOut, from a number of different sources, the rapper checked himself into a Florida drug rehab over the weekend. Right now no one seems to be talking about it - so officially it's still a "rumor". But more evidence is coming forward that is making the rumor look more and more credible. For example, yesterday the rapper missed a mandatory court appearance in Arizona His lawyer told the judge that it was because of an "undisclosed medical procedure." Hmmmm.

An overnight accident last week left a gaping hole and a big mess at the Drury Inn Downtown. The accident happened last week when a pickup driver crashed through the wall of the second floor garage. The impact of the accident sent bricks flying, littering the ground and sidewalk below. There were no injuries or major structural damage to the building. There is no word yet on what caused the driver to drive through the wall of the garage.

A Caseyville, Illinois woman was arrested last Thursday for prostitution after detectives said they found an online ad offering sex. St. Clair County detectives received a tip Wednesday, according to Captain Steve Johnson, a sheriff's department spokesman. "We were notified via email anonymously that this individual was soliciting prostitution on the internet," Johnson said. Detectives found the women's entry on the online classified site Craigslist. They said emails were exchanged between undercover officers. "Pretty graphic, specifically going into what she would do and what she wouldn't do," Johnson said. During those email exchanges, detectives set up a meeting with the women at a hotel in Fairview Heights, and sex for money was discussed.
"There was one undercover officer in the room and several others there for security reasons," Johnson said.
Officers arrested 28-year-old Lynn Collins for prostitution. It was the third arrest in the past week in St. Clair County involving an alleged prostitute using Craigslist. Two women were arrested in Belleville last Friday.
Johnson said law enforcement was well aware of solicitation for sex on the Internet.
Collins bonded out of jail Thursday.
Man, we wonder if this was taped for the reality show, COPS. This is mos def sex, lies and videotape---- out of control!

The sisters of a missing Belleville woman are pleading with the public for help to find their sister. They are also putting up $10,000 of their own money as a reward to anyone who comes forward with information that leads to the whereabouts of their sister, Janet Tillman. Belleville Police Capt. Don Sax said there have been no solid leads on the case since Tillman was reported missing by her family on Nov. 5. She was last seen getting into a vehicle on Oct. 28 in the area of Ninth Street and Exchange Avenue in East St. Louis. Police found the individual who was driving the car she was last seen in, but no solid leads or evidence came out of interviews with the driver. Police have also gone back to interview people again and were unable to come up with any additional information. Janet Tillman, 50, is a black woman with medium skin tone; 5 feet, 7 inches tall; 185 pounds; and wears glasses. She has a scar on her neck from a trachea tube and a scar on her left eyebrow. She was also known to frequent the Illinois 203 Truck Stop in Troy and has a police record with several charges for solicitation and prostitution. The sisters added that Janet Tillman does have a history of a mental disability and was classified as fully disabled because she was unable to remember some things and had a strong inability to focus.

Vickie Tillman flew in from Oceanside, Calif., to distribute photographs of her sister and get the word out, hoping someone will come forward with information that will help police find her. Anyone with information about Janet Tillman is asked to call the Belleville Police Department at 618-234-1218.

Two months after Lori Drew was
charged with a count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing a computer without authorization for her part in a MySpace hoax that was connected to the suicide of a 13-year-old girl, her lawyers have argued that the charges should be dropped.
According to the
Los Angeles Times, one of Lori Drew's defense lawyers, H. Dean Steward, argued in federal court on Wednesday that there is no law that prohibits the behavior his client engaged in, and so the charges against her should be dropped. In a series of three motions, Steward claimed that millions of Internet users make up fake or anonymous identities all the time and are not prosecuted for it.

During the trial, investigators said that Drew and one of her teenage employees "instigated and monitored" the fake MySpace profile of "Josh Evans" in order to see what Meagan Meier was saying about Drew's daughter after the two girls had a falling out. Local and federal prosecutors in Missouri had investigated the case first and concluded that, while Drew's alleged actions might be seen as morally suspect, they could not find a legal means to pursue a criminal case.
"If violating user agreements is a crime, millions of Americans are probably committing crimes on a daily basis and don't know it," Steward wrote, according to the Times.

It was also brought up that Meier could have been given a different type of medication for her mental condition which could have caused her to commit suicide
Federal prosecutors plan to file a response to the motions in court next week and said they are not considering a plea agreement. Drew has pleaded not guilty in the case, which is set to go to trial on October 7. She could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
What do yawl think? Should the charges be dropped? Seems like the defense attorney has mos def brought reasonable doubt to this case.

Drury Development Corp. wants to build two 345-room hotel towers overlooking Forest Park, but the availability of some land needed for it is in question. The Missouri Department of Transportation owns the 2.5 acres at the southeastern corner of Kingshighway and Highway 40 (Interstate 64). It no longer needs the land, given the new configuration of that interchange.

There were several cases of West Nile in Godfrey, Ill last week.
The Galleria has gotten a lot of pub this week. First, there was an indepth story in the Riverfront Times about the out of control shoplifting at the Galleria in clayton and targeting the Mterolink for the pupsoe of the increased crime. Then this week, the staff at LUSH cosmetics in the Galleria are taking the term "naked lunch" to a whole new level today. Beginning at noon, one man and three women who work at the LUSH shop will wear nothing but aprons in a nationwide protest against product overpackaging. Allie Leung, a spokeswoman in New York for the company, said the protest is also designed to encourage shoppers to buy LUSH's naked — as in unwrapped. During the protest, the shop workers will educate passers-by on the environmental impact of packaged goods. 1 will make a change in the programming line-up. We wonder how long of an apron they will wear? We are sure they will be covering the goodies.

NYC-based model manager Michael Flutie was in our town last Friday scouting young women for a new MTV show "Model Maker," which is due to debut next year. Flutie was at the Bronx-Diba Shoe Outlet in Earth City interviewing aspiring models. He said he already has about five good candidates on his short list from the region. Flutie described the show as more "Rocky," than "America's Next Top Model," and added that the 15 women who are selected will go through three months of intensive physical fitness training to help them reach their ideal size. Flutie worked locally with Jeff and Mary Clarke of O'Fallon, Mo.-based Mother Model Management. The trio did a Midwest trip — going to Iowa City, Omaha, Des Moines and Kansas City, before heading back to St. Louis — searching for potential models. Cris Abrego Productions is producing the show. The show's winner will get an MTV prize package that includes $100,000, a professional modeling portfolio and a personal trainer for a year. KMOX personality and New daddy John Carney was among a score of celebrity servers who made it last Thursday night to Monarch Restaurant in Maplewood for the St. Louis Crisis Nursery's 18th Annual Celebrity Waitresses' & Waiters' Night event. Some 600 fans helped raise nearly $100,000 for the nursery, a short-term haven for children in emergency or crisis situations. The "all-star" line-up of celebs, which included former Rams player D'Marco Farr, Alive Magazine's Attilio D'Agostino; KMOV weatherman Kent Erhardt; St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley; Larry Conners, Vickie Newton and Allan Cohen, all of KMOV-TV; Sherman George; and state Sen. Rep. Rachel Storch. In unrelated Carney newz, John Carney's new baby is John James Sirko-Carney. He was born Aug. 5.

We think the rumors that meteorologist John Fuller is out at Channel 5, KSDK-TV rings to be true according to a source. Fuller is one of four meteorologists at the station. The others are Cindy Preszler, Mike Roberts and Scott Connell. Fuller and another meteorologist were told they would have to take pay cuts in order to keep their jobs. The sources said Fuller declined that offer.

CABARET ST. LOUIS

Cabaret St. Louis is coming in October. The inaugural Cabaret St. Louis fall lineup will include Fran Landesman, Steve Ross, Sylvia McNair, Lee Lessack and Tony Sandler. Performances will be held at The Sheldon, Kranzberg Arts Center, The Gaslight Theatre plus additional venues. All shows begin at 8 p.m. Tickets for Cabaret St. Louis fall season go on sale Tuesday, September 2 at 10 a.m. at all MetroTix locations.

FRAN LANDESMAN returns to her roots October 22-25 at The Gaslight Theatre. The legendary proprietess of Gaslight Square’s Crystal Palace presented such artists as Barbra Streisand, The Smothers Brothers and Elaine May. But outside of St. Louis, Ms. Landesman is most well known for her own songs and shows. Spring Can Hang You Up The Most and The Ballad Of The Sad Young Man became standards and were recorded by Elle Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand and Sarah Vaughn. Fifty years later, accompanied by her son Myles, and around the corner from the old Crystal Palace, this top songwriter and cultural icon will treat St. Louis to an evening of storytelling and song. Tickets for Fran Landesman are $35.

The smartest of the smart set and St. Louis favorite, STEVE ROSS, returns with his latest work, “To Wit: Ross on Wry – Funny Songs Throughout The Ages,” October 1-4 at the new Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center. Ross is no stranger to St. Louis, as he has performed many times at The Grand Center Cabaret, Cabaret in The Savoy Room and St. Louis Muny. After Ross’s 2004 St. Louis appearance, Chuck Lavazzi of KDHX Radio wrote, “The fact is, Mr. Ross has a breezy elegance on stage that’s reminiscent of Fred Astaire, Noel Coward, Cole Porter and, above all, the late and much lamented Bobby Short.” Tickets for Steve Ross are $40.

Cabaret at The Sheldon will host Grammy Winner SYLVIA MCNAIR October 16-17 for two performances only. A beloved performer at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Ms. McNair has segued from opera to the Great American Songbook, the music with which she feels most at home. Now, instead of singing V'adoro pupille on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, she's singing Embraceable You to rave reviews. Of McNair's Algonquin Oak Room debut, Rex Reed wrote, "Her phrasing is exemplary. Her modulations are inspired. I could get used to this kind of ecstasy." Tickets for Sylvia McNair are $45.

LEE LESSACK’S lyric baritone vocals and sophisticated yet endearing persona have made him a shining star of the international cabaret scene. His tribute to Johnny Mercer, “Too Marvelous For Words,” runs October 29-November 1 at the Kranzberg Arts Center. As we celebrate the centennial of Mercer, Lessack is the perfect match for this romantic of songwriters. Billboard Magazine calls his singing, "Cabaret romanticism of a high order." Tickets for Lee Lessack are $30.

TONY SANDLER finishes the CSTL Fall season November 13-14 at The Sheldon with “Chevalier-Maurice & Me.” This show is neither caricature nor impersonation, but a heartfelt homage to this widely-admired entertainer. It has been the subject of a PBS special and DVD, and contains the charm and savoir faire that Maurice himself brought to film and stage. Tickets for Tony Sandler are $40. Tickets for all five Cabaret St. Louis performances go on sale Tuesday, September 2 at 10 a.m. at all MetroTix locations. To charge by phone call 314-534-1111 or online at www.MetroTix.com. Memberships available by calling 314-726-1616. For more information, visit www.cabaretstl.org. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
