OUT 309 TOP 10 STL-BITZ OF 2007

THERE WERE MANY NEWZ STORIEZ THAT ROCKED THE STL IN 2007. HERRE ARE A FEW OF THOSE ITEMS THAT GOT PEOPLE TALKIN LONGER THAN THE WALK TO AND FROM THE WATER COOLER.

HONORABLE MENTIONS. The manhunt for ATL's Julian Walker in September who was running from the law after killing his teenage girlfriend. This two hour event led to his commiting suicide in an wooded area in the Fairview heighst area.

Also, the crazy construction and reconstruction work that went on all this year I-64 /40 and the news of the Countown to the Shutdown being introduced this year (that will take place Jan. 2 , 2008)

10. Cards manager Tony LaRussa had an interesting 2007. First getting arrested in Jupiter, Fla in April for drunk driving during Spring Training, then the doubts of him returning to the Cards as manager and soon after pleading guilty in December, the police video of that infamous night made public of a drunken-stupored LaRussa.

9.The STL was in an uproar in October after former ST. Louis fire Cheif Sherman George resigned after getting demoted by Mayor Francis Slay's office. As a result, the Clergy Coalition, a collection of about 60 preachers led a Recall the mayor rally on the steps of city hall . The crowd numbered 250 to 300 people. It was reported that future rallies will also be in the plans in 2008 .

8. In November, Kevin Johnson got the death penalty for the murder of Kirkwood Police Sergeant Bill McEntee in the Meacham Park neighborhood in 2005. What made this case fascinating was in April, the jury could not decide whether to give him 1st degree or 2nd degree in the killlling which lead to a mistrial.

7.This summer, an aflluent husand and wife were not charged for the killing of a 7-month-old girl who was left for hours in a sweltering car at Washington University after miscommunication of of picking up the daughter. teh contrioversy stemmed from the anonymity given to the couple as opposed to the public scrunity given to Delea Payne, a daycare center driver, who was arrested after leaving a 3-year-old boy in a van during a trip at the Science Center and was unharmed..

6.The city mourned the tragic loss of upstart police officer Norvelle Brown, 24, in August whowas shot and killed in an ambush on Semple Avenue by a 15-year-old suspect who had intended to kill a police officer. The 15-year-old male and an 18-year-old accomplice were arrested and charged with the murder of Officer Brown. Officer Brown had served with the St. Louis Police Department for one year.

5.In March, the State took control of the troubled St. Louis Public Schools after the great squabbles between former School Board President Veronica O'Brien and Superintendent Diana Bourisaw. Various students who attended SLPS protested the decision in Jeff City as the decision was taking place. The decision went into effect in June.

4.The St. Louis Rams had a record year in 2008 of having the longest losing streak in the NFL's 70 year franchise histiry (not too many the number of star players getting injured). They lost eight consecutuve games (During week 9 they had a bye week). It was duuirng week 10 of the NFL season when the Rams finally won its first game against the New Orleans Saints (37-29). As of this writing, the Rams were 3-11 and had no signs of being in the playoffs.

3.Missouri was No. 1 voted for one week in November by the Associated Press when the Mizzou Tigers won after their win to Kansas City (36-28) at the Mizzou Arena. This was Missouri's first time in college football history to be ranked as such. butteh bullet fell when teh Tigers was one victory away from their first-ever national championship when tehy lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio( 38-17) in the Big 12 championship game in San Antonio. Although the team was passed over to play in the BCS Bowl, they will play in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1 against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

2.In October, the drama unfolded in the resignation of Fire Chief Sherman George and the players stemming from it. Geireg resigned after pressure from the Myaor Francis Slay's office to promote amongst the ranks but rallied NO to such pressures after George decided the placement tests were racially-biased (but was shut down after a court saying the tests were fair) . After much media frenziness leading up to his resignation, the Mayor's Office and new Public Safety Director Charles Bryson decided to demote George to Battalion Chief thus George retiring. As a result, Interim chief Steven Kotraba (formerly Deputy Chief) was appointed to do the promotions, black firefighters group F.I.R.E. and ralluied citizens cried FOUL(See TIDBIT No. 9) and battallion chief Dennis Jenkerson was appointed new fire chief (and FIRE crying FOUL).

AND THE NUMBER ONE STL-TIDBITZ STORY OF 2007 IS...............................

THE MIRACLE IN MISSOURI

Well, the big story herre in ST. Louis on a local, national and even international tip is the Miracle on Missouri when boys Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck was found in a Kirkwood apartment in Jaunary. Dubbed Miracle in Missouri, Ownby (who was missing for four days) was found and Shawn Hornbeck was also found (who was missing for four years) by police in Devlin's apartment in Kirkwood from a tip by Ownby's classmate who saw Ownby get off the bus and was kidnapped into Devlin's car.

This story even made it onto Oprah's show when she had the families of the boys and their families on the show, so you know this was a major story!

The Hornbecks got a new house from the deal (a new 4-bedroom, $300,000 home in West County in May)and peace of mind! Whereas Devlin
was charged for kidnapping and armed criminal action on federal and state charges This big newz coming out of the STL mos definitely was the charging of former pizza manager Michael Devlin who pled guilty of all 71 offenses of kidnapping and sexual assault against was sentenced in October in St. Louis County Circuit Court to 18 consecutive life terms, 52 additional concurrent life terms and 15 years for kidnapping. As of this writing, he will be sentenced this Friday.

OUT 308--TOP 10 SOCIAL EVENTS OF THE STL

THERE WERE MANY SOCIAL EVENTS THAT WENT DOWN IN THE STL, BUT HERE ARE TEN OF THE ONES THAT MADE NOIZE IN THE STL.

HONORABLE MENTION: In August--The wedding and reception of Jessie and Bridgette Taylor at the Lights on Broadway. It was the talk of the town of this funny man's nuptials and reception. Funny, sentimental and an all out hood party, the wedding was definitely THE STL celebrity wedding of the year!

10. In May, networking group SYGU stepped it up with one of their many themed parties in 2007. The first was TEESE that was held at the Central West End Bed and Breakfast where folk had to where a graphic tee--shirt for admittance.

9. In August, The 50 Million Pound Challenege at Union Station brought out hundreds to check out the outside Health Expo and check out the celebs who came through including founder Dr. Ian, Biz Markie, Shirley Murdock and Joe.

8.In October, the Black Men Magazine Model Search at Club Denim and Society. Mocha Latte (left) spearheaded this event that brought in close to 100 STL sistas to compete. The inetrviews were spreheaded by publisher Marcus Blassingame (right) at Club Denim in the U City Loop and the winner was revealed at Society. Special guest Shannon (middle) of the "Same Girl" music video annoucned the winner.

7. In November, Forbidden took place at J Bucks. Presented by FREE TIME, So Diverse and Precision, this one of a kind collabo brought err body up in J Bucks in Clayton for this networking event. 104.1 Radio perosonlity Metti Metti was on the 1s and 2s and VIP had FREE alcohol flowing all nite.

6.Although OUTTOWN did not attend, it was reported that Slim's Balck party that was held at three different venues in September , Wax Musem, Society and Club Rio for the youngsters, college and adult crowds had it packed at all spots. Free drinks were flowing and the admittance was patrons had to wear black (which fit well afterteh Jena 6 protest!).

5.In July, the debut of Sunday Night Shindig at Lucky's. Host and creator Mocha Latte's second weekly venture (the first was Got Lyrics) was the hangout for a spell. Its debut drew in record crowds of over 600 hood stars in the building. DJ Reminsce was on the 1s and 2s and free soul food for teh early birds. The event was unprecendented for the new club . Unfortunately the weekly venture closed shop in early December after rumors of the club's closing.

4.In August, Alive Magazine's Fashion Week. A first for STL, Alive Maagzine brought in various designers from across the country and the STL to showcase its fashions and to have its own Fashion Week(alike L.A. and New York) for three nites. The memorable nite occured outside at Cafe Eau near the pool where they had the fashion show Liquid Style.

3.In July, Musiq Soulchild came to Live on The Levee on the Archgrounds. The free event broke fairground records as far as attendance (mainly due to many out of towners visting STL for the Urban League Conference). Opening for Musiq were Chrisette Michelle and local jazzman Lamar Harris.

2. In September, Nelly's Labor Day Weekend. Nelly brought Hollywood to the Lou again this year as he expanded the concept from one gala (like last year that was held at the Contemporary Art Musuem and was the No 1 Social OUTTOWN event of 2006) to three nites. Friday nite was for the hoodies at Society, Saturday nite was at the Boathouse where patrons must wear white that had actor Lorenz Tate in the building and the topper was his 2nd Annual Black and White Ball that brought in celebrities such as Jermaine Dupri, Ashanti, David Banner, Ruben Studdard and a host of local celebs from the TV and sports fields (Only downer was Janet was a no show this year). Err one was VIP from the sit down dinner to the free deserts and drinks all nite. They also had a photo booth for people to take their pics that was projected on the wall.

AND THE NO. 1 SOCIAL EVENT OF 2007 IS.................................................

THE ANNUAL URBAN LEAGUE CONFERENCE

In August, over 15, 000 folk from across the country and the ST particpated in the three day conference that featured various panels ranging from helath to eductaion. Although many were for a hefty fee, they also had a free career expo for the common folk that took place in the main hall. The highlighted events took place at the Ferrara Theatre where notable panelists participated including Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson.

As well as the Democratic Presidential "debate" (more like speeches)which included Sen. Barak Obama

The other highlighted event was the concert that was performed at the theatre by neo soul diva Erykah Badu and R&B legend Teena Marie.

OUT 307--TOP 10 STL SOCIALITES OF 2007

THE STL STARS WERE ON HAND ON THE TOWN. HERE ARE THE TOP 10 SOCIALITES THAT WERE HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE IN THE STL IN 2007.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Maxine Elbert (seen right of pic on left) was instrumental in several events with her Maxxed Out production comapny inclduing Wine Down Wedensdays, the Annual Hollis Thomas Foundation Week , big girl comepition Thick Thursdays and Lyric Lounge at Laughs on the Landing AND

Ms. Keisha (pictured below with Stress Free's Mark Anthony Jones) who was everywhere at someones party from Sunday Night Shindig to her own organziation What's Ya Flava.

AND an honorable mention goes out to the stlonfire.com crew (Mister Daniel and Mr. Andrew) who made a splash with their local media website as well as hosting various parties (including the upcoming Rams Watch party at Kitchen K this Thuirday) and kicking it separately or as a team at different night spots.

10. Stress Free Fridays Mark Anthony Jones and Mario Wayne. Every week this social duo had a venue every Friday for those to enjoy a Happy Hour atmosphere. They also temed up with various organziations for events (ie. Industry Night at J Bucks) Although Jones was seen out more than his biz partner(who was holdin his own with the locally produced Ray Hills beer), the two no doubt made an impression on the STL night life scene.

9. Big Tah. This brother made his way into the social scene with his 3 Way Promotions with several events including the short lived Swimsuit and Boots and the showcase revue Jamboree and his mainstay, the female swimsuit competition Summer in the City. Not to mention going to various events in the STL on the VIP list. He will cop off the year with a Tour bus to different clubs during New Year's Eve.

8. Mo Spoon. This brother of his production company MPAC was instrumental in the STL social scene with his successful monthly EYE Candy model competition as well as colloborating with social event groups (ie. Red Carpet Wednesdays with the QB's) And he, reluctantly was one of the many StL stars who appeared at diverse functions of 2007.

7.Jimmelle. Model and event coordinator, this sexy model , who was No. 2 last year on the OUTTOWN POLL,. was out of pocket for a minute in 2007, but was visisble at key events including Nelly's Black and White Ball and TRAACES' fundraiser at Vin De Set. She also was an assistant to many events including R Sol's launch party and Casino Royale at the Loft. She also strutted her stuff at the STL Runway Show at Bevo Mills in November.

6. Slim New to the countdown, this brother who run Loose Cannon was involved a lot of behind the scenes events as well as front of the scenes events that packed in the hood stars of 2007. From the get-in-free-parties-with-a-20-dollar bill at the now defunct Kastle, being the advisor to Sunday Night Shindig and the Black Men Magazine Model Search, this brother did his thing in the STL. He also made waves with his Black Party this summer having three parties going on at the same time on both sides of the water. He will end the year with Fame/Fortune, two parties going on at the same time for New Year's Eve.

5.Treanna and Jamie Spencer. This party duo was err wheer at mostly all of the happening parties in 2007. They also teamed up (along with Cornell Boone) this year to form Last Sunday, a monthly networking event that traveled to different venues in the STL. Spencer alone was err where performing at different showcase venues including Got Lyrics, Jamboree and Cafe Soul. The duo now has a new group, ''ZODIAC CONNECTION'' a monthly function at Kitchen K where they cleberate ladies and their birthdays.

4. So Diverse (Lia, Jameela E and Deidria B. ) This girl power group made a splash this year with tehri monthly Flaunty Fusion and Neo Soul events that was held on the second Fridays at Panama Reds. Lia (seen in whiet shirt) alone was like err wherr at a plethora of events in the STL. Their partner Deidria (in blonde hair) left to go to the ATL later on the year but came back occasionally to So Divesre's evenst. The event that helped their popularity was their collaboration with Precision and FREE TIME for Forbidden that was held at J Bucks in November.

3.FREE TIME. This organziation made a big splash in 2007. From sponsoring comedy night at Laughs on the Landing, celebrating their 2 year anniversary at Drunken Fish (which rivaled Nellys Labor Day Weekend event at Society as far as attendance), its charitible consiousness, and colloborating with event groups like SYGU (the memorable Smokin Aces at Club Xes), this group definitely made its presence known in the STL. If you didnt see one member of the group (Roy Robinson Jr, Daryl Frierson or Adrian Saddler) with at least another member of the group, you knew something was wrong!

2. SYGU. From its networking parties at Murcury earlier in the year to the recent Mad Hatter event at Kemper Art Museum, SYGU (compromising of Eddie Hollman(in orange), Rahsad and darryl Gillespie), this group had at least one event every month (Their themed events TEESE and MAD HATTER were memorable events indeed) and colloborations (with FREE TIME for Smokin Aces at Club Xes) and also had a 30th B-day party for Hollman in his hometown in Chicago that brought many STLers Upnorth to celebrate with Hollman. Like, FREE TIME, the members attended events together. They also attended many events of other social organziations including Cafe Soul and 1st friday.

AND THE NO. 1 SOCIALITE OF 2007 IS.............................................

MOCHA

From Jaunuary to December this sista was on the move in 2007.
