The year 2008 has been definitely been a year to remember. Just this week while preppin for the Year End Eventz of 2008, St. Louis had her first winter ice storm of the Winter season cappin’ off a big year of memorable weather events, the political fate of Ill. Gov Rod Blagojavich was in the hands of the State Legislature during a year of historical measures with Hilary and Bill Clinton, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Joe Biden and Barack Obama coming to the Lou to campaign, and East St. Louis track star Dawn Harper won Gold at the Beijing Summer Olympics and St. Louis Cards Albert Pujols winning his second National League's Most Valuable Player Award deterring from the lackluster sports performance from the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams. (Photos by google search)

But before we get into the Top 10, here are a few eventz that didn’t make the cut, but also had an impact on the St. Louis community.

11. The shocking death of Lee "Rose Man" Nixon June 23, 2008

12.Boonie Hat Bandit robs several St. Louis banks

13.The Call to Oneness March June 1, 2008

14.Steve Fawcett’s plane discovery Oct 2008

15.East St. Louis trackster Dawn Harper wins Gold at Beijing Summer Olympics

10.Cardinals Ballpark Village project delay

In late 2007, Phase I for the $300 million plus Cardinal Ballpark Village project where the old Busch Stadium stood was put on hold. In January, the revised plan was to have something erected before the All Star Baseball Game in early 2009--but it looked like that’s all it would be--a plan (and face millions of fines from the city). As a result, Cards Team president Mark Lamping, who spearheaded the initial project, supposedly resigned and replaced by Bill DeWitt III, the son of Cards chair Bill DeWitt Jr.). In August, its developer, Cordish Company, cleaned up the debris, sucked out water from the gaping hole and beautified the area to get Phase I started after local political leaders put them on blast.

9.St. Louis Police Chief Mokwa retires after STL Tow Truck Scandal July 2008

St. Louis Louis'Police Chief Joe Mokwa started off the year reporting the crime figures in the city and dealing with his officers demanding more pay, but in July, Mowka had to face his own career when the Police Board voted unanimously for his “decision” to resign and a majority to receive one year’s pay and pension (dissented by Mayor Slay) after a scandal hit the department involving impounded vehicles at a St. Louis towing company and its accompanied investigation involving access ties from his troubled daughter, Aimie . Later in the year, Col. Daniel Isom was named Mokwa’s successor to Mowka. As of this writing, the investigation was ongoing.

8.The closing of Highway 64 January 2,2008

MODOT dubbed it Countdown to the Shutdown” of the closings of parts of Highway 64 in St. Louis. The campaign and project caused false panic during the first week shutdown in January and its one-year completion time. Folk got into the habit to using alternate routes and MODOT workers worked smoothly on the highway. At year’s end, the west portion of the highway was completed a month early and a celebration party was held. But the real celebration will occur when the St. Louis waits another year for the second half of Highway 64 where Kingshighway begins.

7.The Rams Season Woes Continues

What can we say about the Rams. Last year the organization had the most losingest streak in NFL history, and as of December, saw the Rams have the second worst season (2-11) this season. The Rams had crazy drama in 2008 on and off the grid iron. First, its owner Georgia Frontiere died in January after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Three months later, her children, Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez inherited Rams’ ownership and dispelled buyout rumors of the Rams. In July, running back Steven Jackson held out for two weeks within the 2008 season for a new contract via txt messages to coach Scott Linehan. He eventually returned, but injuries to his thigh muscle sidelined him on some games. In September, head coach Linehan was fired after four successive losses to start the season and replaced by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett. A month in his new role, The NFL denied the
Rams' attempt to rework a contract with Haslett that would ensure him a job beyond this season without looking at other candidates. At years end , it was speculated whether Rams’ management would keep Haslett or pursue a veteran coach and if the Rams would be bought, sold and moved out of St. Louis.

6.My Space hoax trial

This news item spurred national dialogue on what is considered an Internet crime (and we are sure some sensational TV movie). In May, the My Space suicide incident involving a young girl, Meagen Meier, went to criminal court in Los Angeles where My Space was created. In June, Ofallon resident Lori Drew, was
charged with a count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing a computer without authorization in the MySpace hoax connected to Meier’s suicide in 2006. After several starts and stops, in early December, jurors convicted Drew only on
federal misdemeanor charges and her facing up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

5.Weather in STL (earthquake/floods/Ike)

St. Louis had its share of crazy weather. The biggest occurred when the area experience its share of earthquakes and aftershocks. The first and most impressive occurred on April 18, early Friday in the Southern Illinois area. The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. Come early Monday, at least five small aftershocks were felt. The next big weather blast was the flooding in June when the levees in the Missouri area filled up swelling the Mississippi River flooding small cities, closing down businesses temporarily (like the President Casino) and moving events to safer grounds (e.g. Live “Off’ the Levee” in July). The last big weather newz item was the after effects of Hurricane Ike on Sept. 14 that caused mass destruction across the Midwest and dropped more than 6 inches of rain in the St, Louis area. Meanwhile it took FEMA two months to respond to Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt request for aid.

4.Obama Rally at the Archgrounds Oct. 18. 2008

Although Democratic Presidential-elect Obama had his first big rally in February at the Edward Jones Dome , the biggest and most historical rally took place a few days after his third Democratic debate with Republican nominee John McCain. Under the Archgrounds, over 100,000 supporters and onlookers from in and out of town (and out of the country)came to hear Obama speak on his Message of Change. The Rally became the biggest attended rally in St. Louis history.

3.City of Kirkwood tragedy Feb. 7. 2008

This local story made international headlines. In early February disgruntled Kirkwood citizen Charles Cookie Thornton (PICTURED)went on a shooting rampage at a city hall meeting where he shot seven people (five subsequently died) including Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda (who later died from other illnesses in September) before Kirkwood officers shot and killed Thornton. The city mourned months after while questions lingered in regards to Thornton’s reasons for his actions.

2.Inbev buys out Anheuser Busch

This story made international headlines. Rumors of this buyout began circling around February. In June, it was reported that the Beligum-based company wanted to purchase and takeover the cornerstone beer company for $46 billion —but not without a fight from St. Louis politicians and pundits; lawsuits from AB, and AB infighting . In July, the buyout was signed, sealed and delivered as Anheuser-Busch InBev with the transition taking place in December. At last report, thousands of jobs were going to be lost before year’s end.

1.The VP debates with candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden at Wash U Oct. 2, 2008

This was hands down THE newz event in St. Louis that made international headlines (second to Obama winning the Presidency of course). The 90-minute debate reportedly drew nearly 70 million U.S. television viewers(as well as Forsyth Street and classes at Wash U closed off to the public), making it the most watched vice presidential debate ever mainly due to the event’s rising star, Palin. And besides, an event that can draw international and national public leaders just to see if Palin could handle policies without looking like a Saturday Night Live sketch was what made this event very newsworthy. But for St. Louis and Wash U, it was like the Olympics putting both on the playing stage.

NOTE: The Top 10 was based on the frequency of times a story was posted on OUTTOWN, the national scope of the story and its impact aka “watercooler effect” in the St. Louis area.

TOP 10 STL EVENTZ of 2008

From Power Couple/Loosecannon's Fortune/Fame event at 555 Building/Club Society during NYE, to 104.1’s Superjam at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre in June to the very recent Platinum Christmas Party at Lights on Broadway, the STL was the hotbed of events that made not only the local folk come out to party or be entertained, but several of these events even made the world take a closer look at what St. Louis had to offer. The following are the Top 10 STL EVENTZ of 2008.

But before we get to the Top 10, here are a few eventz who didn’t make the Top 10 but still made an impact on the STL social scene.

10.THE U.S. Bank Broadway Series Shows and Specials: Oprah Winfrey presents THE COLOR PURPLE at the Fox October 21-November 2, 2008

The was the most awaited show in St. Louis. Was it worth the wait? According to us, it was mixed. It was more the actual event of going than the actual show. To see young, old, white, black, religious groups all in one theater was still amazing to witness. (Pictured are Jeannette Bayardelle as Celie and Angela Robinson as Shug Avery)

9.Election Watch parties at Loft/ Exo and Ludacris’ listening party at Exo

Majic 104.9 had one at The Loft(pictured ABOVE LEFT are Clear Channel personalities Tony Scott, Tammie Holland and Darryl Eason), Harry and Fred had one at its spot Exo as well as Loose Cannon had one at Lush. All events were free watch parties for the 2008 Presidential election which were all packed to capacity. We saw the results at Exo and the moment Obama clinched the win was definitely memorable. And to top it off afterwards, there was a listening party that rapper Ludacris (PICTURED) had for his CD, “Theatre of the Mind” made it even more better. This event was THE LOCAL CLUB EVENT of 2008.

8.Power Couple/Alive Magazine present Punany Poets at Moolah Lounge April 17, 2008

7.104.1’s Superjam Concert at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre June 21, 2008

Twenty artists --10 local, independent and national, from hip hop and R&B worlds including the St. Lunatics (and the return of City Spud to the group PICTURED ABOVE LEFT), Chingy, Webbie, Keyshia Cole (PICTURED NEXT TO SPUD) and T.I (LEFT), performed before a crowd of 12,000 in attendance, a first for a mostly local artist concert at this venue.

6.Live Off the Levee (Anthony Hamilton) at Soldier's Memorial Park July 5, 2008

Because of the flooding on the Archgrounds, this year’s free Live on the Levee concerts were moved to Soldier’s Memorial. One of those concerts was with R&B singer Anthony Hamilton that brought over 50,000 people (half of the crowd came from the out of towners from the AME Church convention). It was one of the biggest crowds in the concert's 10 plus year history!

5.Kimora Lee Simmons comes to the Lou—Washington University/Synergy’s Lumen After Party March 14-15, 2008

STL native model/fashion mogul Kimora Lee Simmons was in town for an event in her honor at the Steinberg Auditorium at Washington University to kick off Alive Magazine’s Spring Fashion Week. There, she got the Key to the City from Mayor Francis Slay and various other awards. Later that day, she attended an event at Macy’s in the Galleria that was super-packed. Her stay culminated with a party for her at Lumen promoted by Synergy (PICTURED). Her stay was also filmed for her reality show "Life In the Fab Lane.”

4.Will Smith comes to St. Lou—AMC 12 Creve Couer Nov. 19. 2008

International superstar Will Smith came through to the Lou during his red carpet tour for the advance screening of his film, “Seven Pounds.” Although only a few hundred was able to see the film, hundreds attended the event to catch a glimpse of the rapper/actor (PICTURED WITH FANS). The event, which gave the STL this year's Hollywood appeal event of the year, also doubled as a food drive for St. Louis Area Foodbank. It was definitely a memorable moment in St. Louis events.

3.Call to Oneness March June 1, 2008

As many as 50,000 black men including ministers, businessmen and everyday folk, marched at St. Louis' most historic black neighborhoods The Ville against crime and other ills that have infested some St. Louis neighborhoods. The "Call to Oneness" campaign was launched with panel discussions and neighborhood meetings on what organizers are calling a "state of emergency" in the black community.

2.Obama Rallies at the Edward Jones Dome Feb. 2, 2008 and at the Archgrounds Oct. 18, 2008

It was hard to not make this No. 1, but….Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama came through the Missouri area two times for free rallies. The first was in Feb. 2, at the Edward Jones Dome (ABOVE PIC) where over 20,000 rally goers showed up and stood on the floor of the Dome to see him and hear his CHANGE message fresh off his Iowa win in January. The second was Oct. 18 (BELOW LEFT)when then Democratic Presidential nominee candidate came through the Missouri area with two rallies. The first was in St. Louis which brought out a historic 100,000 plus people under the Gateway Arch. The huge showing set a record for an Obama event.

1.The VP debates with candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden at Wash U Oct. 2, 2008

Although 200 or so actually attended (nearly 8000 students entered a lottery to get inside) and more than Hundreds of journalists from across the world reported this spectacle, this event was THE SOCIAL EVENT of 2008. The debate reportedly drew nearly 70 million U.S. television viewers, making it the most watched vice presidential debate ever mainly due to the rising star, Palin. This event definitely put St. Louis on the map mainly because Missouri was a “bellweather” state and up for grabs for the political parties.

NOTE: The criteria for the Top 10 was based on mainly one-time out events that made the most impact in the St. Louis area. For annual events, to be considered in the running was based on its memorable impact on the social scene. Venerable events such as May Day Parade, Salute to Excellence events and the Missouri Black Expo were considered, but, although worthy, did not have a long lasting effect and impact.

From veteran promotion group The Platinum Group and its main socialite Jacque Land on the scene to the newbie STL 365 and its weekly Friday Movie Nite, the STL has many social groups who have promoted on and poppin' events for us to network and get our party on. The following are the Top 10 Socialites/Promoters who made a mark this year.

But before we get to the Top 10, herre are a few socialites/promoters who didnt make the cut, but still made an impact in the STL.

From their NYE bash Fortune (with Loosecannon) at 555 Building, to bringing in the provocative Punany Poets in Moolah Lounge (that folk still talkin about) and the Posh party at Scape (that had a female model on top of a table whose torso was topped with appetizers), this power couple, Keith and Carri Griffin (pictured) aka the Black Beckhams made a brief but impacting shake on the STL scene bringin in a touch of class and eliteness for the grown and sexy crowd.

7.Vanita Applebum Entertainment. This music promotion company made an impact this year with its monthly Suite Soul Spot that showcased various singers and musicians in the STL area as well as bringing in national headliners with a indie feel. From their event Couture at Milhalis Chophouse, co-sponsoring a super promotions group event SHADES at J Bucks and its monthly and popular Zodiac Connections parties mostly held at J Bucks downtown STL, this group (pictured Boone, Treanna, Carletta and Jamie Spencer) brings a sense of fashion style and mixes it up at many social scenes with their group, as a duo (especially Treanna and Spencer) and separately especially Spencer who was a mainstay at Got Lyrics at Van Gohz and Cafe Soul at Lucas School House. Earlier in the year, Treanna moved away from St. Louis and was quickly replaced with Miss Alma (who was the socilaite herself at various events) also left a few months in the group and was replaced with Treanna when she retured to St. Louis later in the year. Its leader Boone was also one of the Dapper Dans on the social scene as well. Its upcoming events are ZODIAC CONNECTION.: The Final Connection at VITO'S on Dec. 20 and a collaboration with SYGU for a NYE party at ST.LOUIS CITY HALL.

2.FreeTime. These guys (pictured Adrian Saddler, Roy Robinson and Daryl Frierson) are the Young Black Upscale Men Trio. They had at least one event going on and were the only group that came to other promoter's events as a trio for the whole year. From the FREE TIME/XM2's Kingdom Come event at J Bucks in January, co sponsoring with the super promotions group on FLAUNT YOUR TASTE at the Loft (hosted by"BET's 106 and Park's" Terrance and the ALL BLACK AFFAIR at Lumen (hosted by singer Amerie) this Spring, their 3 year anniverary party at Reggie's Backstage in the fall, putting on Parties with a Purpose with diffrent causes and bringing back the weekly networking event "Groove Theory" in October held now at Exo, these guys reflected the essence of how to throw a party and be gentlemen at the same time. THE OUTCAM was out and about in 2008. Every so often, we would flick a pic of something or someone that made us go “That is too much playin,” outrageous things that happened while we were out on the town. We had so many pics to choose from, but here are 10 of the best that we thought that should be on the list.

HONORARY MENTION: This sista who was at the Loft..............nuff said. She repped all the sistas out there who goes to the club wears that "YOU SHOULDNT HAVE" outift.

3.While walking at Delmar Loop one summer Sunday, there was this dog who was in the driver's seat in this car. We were waitin for the dog to turn the ignition! LOL.

2.St Louis native Passion who is part of the Punany Poets performed at Moolah Lounge in April and gave everyone a show of how to self please!

1 S.L.A.M. of the Punany Poets at Moolah Lounge. He brought up two volunteers from the audience to simulate a lil cunnilingus during this menege trois and had everybody gettin the fever!
