OUT 621--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

IT's WEDNESDAY!

TIME TO GET 'TOWNED! Before we get into the A&E in the ILLI and MO, by next posting on Wednesday, we will be in the month of June where we celebrate Black Music History Month. To get a head start of things, we decided to start featuring some of the areas contributors to black music. First up is Kinloch, Mo based singer Ann Peebles.

Born April 27, 1947, Peebles is best known for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s on the Hi Records label. Two of her better known songs are "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" and "I Can't Stand the Rain.”

According to wikipedia, Peebles was discovered as a talent by Gene "Bowlegs" Miller of Hi Records during a 1968 trip to sit in singing with him at a Memphis, Tennessee, nightclub. A popular local bandleader, Miller was known for also helping other musicians, such as members of the Hi Rhythm Section, get their start in the Memphis music industry. Peebles soon began penning and singing hits for the label, co-writing with label staff songwriter Don Bryant, whom she later married in 1974. Peebles released a number of commercially successful and critically well received albums produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records throughout the 1970s, until the rise of disco music in the late 1970s took her music out of the limelight.

In 2006 she released the album Brand New Classics, which consisted of re-recordings of some of her songs in an
acoustic style.

Peebles has been sampled by many hip hop artists, in particular RZA and the Wu-Tang Clan. Furthermore her track "I Can't Stand The Rain" was first covered by Patrice Banks of Graham Central Station on the 1975 release of "Ain't No 'Bout A Doubt It" album and on Tina Turner’s comeback 1984 album, “Private Dancer.” It has also been utilized as a sample by the hip hop duo Reflection Eternal (a collaborative group comprised of conscious hip hop artist Talib Kweli, and producer Hi-Tek) for their song "Memories Live" on their debut album Train Of Thought.

In 1997, Missy Elliott recorded an interpolation of "I Can't Stand the Rain," entitled "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", as the first single from her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly. In the 1970s, the late pop singer John Lennon was quoted as saying “Rain” was the best recorded single ever.

AND NOW TO THE A&E in the ILLI AND MO

Last week, reports from Riverfront Times and the Evenig Whirl had come out in regards to why STL based rapper Huey was a no show at the May Day Fest held at the Pageant a coupel of Sundays ago.
According to reports, Huey was asked to not attend the event because of the allegations that the young rapper may have been the target of the now infamous triple-homicide that occurred in downtown St. Louis, late Friday, May 8 on 18th and Market near the Post Office. In that incident, the three guys who were killed had just left a concert by rapper Yo Gotti at Club Society (which has now closed from the subsequent killings) , when a car pulle dup alongside the car where the guys were in at a stoplight and fired shots.

Reports also say that 100.3 The Beat’s DJ AJ who organized the May Day Fest through the Derrty DJ Midwest Summitm, decdied to remove Huey from the Summit as well as the concert when Pageant management reportedly told him that St. Louis police believe Huey was near where the killings had taken place. According to the RFT, Huey was supposedly a car behind the car that got shot up and that he was the actual target. The Whirl reported Monday in its paper that the STLPD have ruled out Huey as a suspect in the case.

Wow, this is Fucked up indeed. We are hearing on the streets that its an all out retaliation thang now with the killed fam and that they are about to stroke while its hot (If not already). Our question is, if Huey is in the middle of the thickness, why? Could it have stemmed from the STL beef that Huey had with Nelly a few years ago with the New v. Old St. Lou thang? Well, we are sure that can’t be ruled out. Is it a camp thing? Possibly. But one thing is certain, three people unfortunately got killed.
We are sure it will come out on the reason that Huey may have a link in the killings. If not already. It’s just a matter of time.

STL based rap mogul Nelly and the St. Lunatics took its reunion on the road after the Pageant debut when they performed last week in Houston at a "Smash the Mic" benefit for founding Geto Boys member Willie D who is in jail for
scamming people on Ebay (But the highlight oddly enough was Tennessee Titans Vince Young While onstage with the rapper rolled out a wad of cash and started showering the crowd with dollar bills). He also introduced his blood brother on stage City Spud, a member of the Tics who reunited with the group last year after being incarcerated for a assault charge in 2000. He told the crowd that when he used to wear the band-aid on his face it was a tribute to Spud. Now that his brother is out of prison, he no longer wears it. To peep the Tics’ performance as well as Nelly’s interview with Smash the Mic TV, go to

In unrelated Nelly newz, he along with other hip-hop and R&B artists will suit up on the b-ball court for BET personality Big Tigger’s 8th Annual Celebrity Classic Others slated to appear are Trey Songz, , J. Holiday, Tank, and ATL actor Jackie Long June 5 and 6 in D.C benefiting HIV/AIDs awareness in that community.

STL rapper Yung Ro (TOP PIC) just debuted his new video for his single “Donk Dat (Remix)” featuring Chingy and City Spud of the St. Lunatics. The video was shot on location at Ro’s father Roland Page’s tattoo shop, Black Pearl located on 20th and Olive. Directed by Mr. A, it also has guest appearances by radio personality Silly Asz and model Ashlai Box. To peep it out, go to

http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshhw5pMZfbno9B6y4ji

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

In unrelated Chingy newz, according to www.bossip.com, the site received letter from a reader recently saying that the rapper supposedly impregnated Tiffany of The Bad Girls Club and bounced out once he heard the new when she told him and supposedly stopped returning her calls and refuses to speak with her. Hmm. What’s really goin on? Is this really true or is this a stunt in the Chingy camp to check mate those Chingy-tranny rumors that came out last month? Bossip has the two taking a pic in a club, but hey, anyone can take a pic with someone. It doesn’t mean they are sleeping together. Hmm, we are kinda iffy on this one.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There are talks for the Kiel Opera House in downtown STL to be back open. According to reports, there are negotiations going on with the city and SCP Worldwide, the New York-based firm that took over the lease for the Kiel when it bought the St. Louis Blues in 2006. The city closed the venue in 1991. So will this mean more competition for Scott Trade Center, The Fox, Chaifetz and the Touhill? Hmmm, we smell a bidding war for artists and ticket prices going even more sky high.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Bravo’s “Top Chef” winner Stephanie Izard and contestant Dale Levitski are coming to the Lou today, Wednesday at Soulard Market. The two stars will do three one-hour demonstrations, with samples, set for 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. (As of this blogging, the tour may have rolled out of here)

In the MIA FILE- Where is STL singer Tanka?

BLIND PICZ Who’s this brotha who was sportin a freshly-shaved bald head at the Little Black Dress event at Exo last weekend?

BLIND BITZ. Which former STL mover and shaker was contacted recently by a big time biz man with Hollywood connections about coming aboard to work with him? (Hint. The STL mover and shaker had an “American” kind of “style” and the biz man’s biggest client recently co-starred in a show on the “Great White Way.”)

STL-ICIOUS. Coco Soul and Theresa (tie) and STL rapper Bee.

Coco Soul. This repeat listed artist will be on stage as host and performer at two different venues. Thus, he got noticed by execs at Clarity. Then, on Thursday his music label is having giveaway at Chase Park Plaza, then he’s having a b-day celebration at Lure (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW)

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ

Why are the Republicans tryin’ to cause a stank with the nomination of Prez Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor? Why have people relegated Memorial Day to just a day to each BBQ? Why does Tuesday feel like Monday after Labor Day? and Why is singer Kelis gettin slack for doin a sex tape before she got married?

By Sheldon Epps May 27, 2009 - June 28, 2009 (Grandel Theatre)
The universal language of the blues wails out full and strong in this dynamite "dramatic revue" of twenty-six hot and steamy numbers that tell of the sweet, sexy and sorrowful experiences three delicious women have with one very lonely, lying, cheating snake of a man who does them wrong! With little spoken text, the interweaving stories are defined through glorious songs which cover the range of this indigenous American art form, from Bessie Smith to Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Alberta Hunter, Jimmy Cox, Ida Cox and more, telling of the pain and misery of life and love and also of the dogged determination to get through it all that is the essence of the blues.

I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea.
