OUTTOWNERS! ITS WEDNESDAY. TIME TO GET TOWNED!
Before we get into the A&E in the ILLI and MO, now that we are officially in June and this being Black Music Month, we would like to spotlight another significant black artist in our history, Jazz musician, Charlie “Bird” Parker.
Charles Parker, Jr. (August 29, 1920 – March 12, 1955) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer.
Born in Kansas City, Mo. , Parker is widely considered one of the most influential of
Parker played a leading role in the development of
Although many Parker recordings demonstrate dazzling virtuosic technique and complex melodic lines – such as "Koko", "Kim", and "Leap Frog" – he was also one of the great blues players. His themeless blues improvisation "Parker's Mood" represents one of the most deeply affecting recordings in jazz. At various times, Parker fused jazz with other musical styles, from classical to Latin music, blazing paths followed later by others.
Parker also became an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat generation, personifying the conception of the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual, rather than just a popular entertainer. His style – from a rhythmic, harmonic and soloing perspective – influenced countless peers on every instrument. Like Louis Armstrong before him, Parker changed the sound of jazz music forever.
AND NOW THE A &E:
Could the St. Louis Rams be moving out of the St. Louis area? Well this week, it was reported that
The St. Louis Rams’ decision to keep Goldman Sachs, the franchise’s investment banking firm is getting folks buzzin that owner Chip Rosenbloom is trying to get someone with eth highest bid to buy the$929 million dollar team.
Rosenbloom inherited the team after his mother the late Georgia Frontiere the previous owner of the Rams died in early 2008 Reports say Blues Chairman Dave Checketts has formed a financial group to possibly buy Rosenbloom out but the actual dealings have yet to be finalized.
The issue at hand is reportedly the high estate taxes on inheritance and not being able to make a profit after taxes. Also, Rosenbloom is open to any buyer local or non local to buy it. But, in the St. Louis Rams’ lease with the Edward Jones Dome (the home of the Rams games) it reportedly states that outside buyers cannot move the Rams without conditions. Wow, from the way its looking, Chip is despite to sell so he can pay off the taxes even if it means possibly breaking the lease and having an outside St. Louisan buy it off his hands. Well, if we were a crystal ball, we would say that it will eventually be bought out and the franchise will remain in the Lou. Its too much invested in the city for the team to move. Besides, what will replace the Dome if the Rams leave? Well, according to the reports, the Rams have been knocked down in the profit gains for a few years now, so, then again, maybe it wont hurt the city.
The second big newz story has been the killing of a bartendar this week during a robbery at pub Maggie Obrien’s on 20th and Market in downtown STL. According to reprts, when the St. Louis Police department held a newz onference soon after, reporting, “ two young men entered Maggie O'Brien's and ordered beer, but appeared casing the place. They left, but returned a short time later with handguns and ordered the five people in the bar to lie on the floor. The bartendar instead ran toward the kitchen, where he was followed by one of the suspects. The other suspect remained in the bar, his gun drawn, with the other four patrons and employees.”
From reports, witnesses heard gunshots in the back of the venue and shot from the actual club area by the other suspect
, who left and, according to the report, “ when it was safe to get up off the floor, they found the bartendar injured and got him to Saint Louis University Hospital where he died in surgery.”
Police said they recovered no guns and weren't aware of any money being taken.
Also, police say minutes after the incident, a man who had been shot in the chest was dropped off at St. Louis Children's Hospital's emergency room by another man, who then fled in a burgundy vehicle. That shooting victim also died in surgery. Investigtors are checking to se eif these two men had anything to do with the killings.
First off, we at OUTTOWN would like to give our prayers and sympathies to the slain bartendar. Now, our thing is, will Maggie OBriens close down just like Club Society closed down? Now, it was evident that Maggie’s violence actually happened IN the venue whereas the drive by killings that happened, also on Market near Maggie OBriens, occurred a mile away from Club Society. Yes, it sounds absurd, but we are making a point. We are sure Maggie OBriens will not close shop and resume after investigations are finished. We are just sayin.
The STL hip-hop community is still mourning the death of rapper Tega (Nelly is reportedly have been in mourning sicne his death) of the rap group, Da Camp put on my St. Lunatic member Murphy Lee’s label UC ME. The 25-year-old rapper( who’s real name was Ortega Devon Henderson )succumbed to his injuries last Friday. when he was , according to a source, put on life support at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. since being shot in the head in Wellston May 16. The facts are unclear as to what happened but a source for OUTTOWN said it possibly could have been a supposed failed robbery attempt. Whether the attempt was either on the rapper or on someone else in Wellston was not clear at the time of this posting. But it was reported that Tega did have a past of criminal behavior and was fighting those demons in the streets.
According to reports he was working with his group on a CD at the time of his shooting. The wake for Tega is this Wednesday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the funeral is this Thursday at 11 am at the Ranld Jones funeral Home 2161 E Fair Ave St Louis. For more info call (314) 383-2332
In lighter ILLI/MO newz, congrats are in store for STLnative model/mogul Kimora Lee who recently had a baby boy this week . According to reports (and on her twitter post) she has named the child 'Kenzo.” (We would like to call him “Lucky,”LOL ) Kenzo is Simmons third child. He joins nine-year old Ming Lee, 9, and six year old Aoki Lee, 6, Kimora's daughters with Russell Simmons. Kenzo is the first child for her beau actor/model star Djimon Hounsou. And you know we cant wait to see them first baby pictures! It should be interesting how the son should look with a mixture of Japanese and black and strong African blood.
In other preggo newz, Chicagoan born singer/actress• Jennifer Hudson finally let the baby out the bag, sort of speak when it was finally reported that she was pregnant. Seven months to be exact. The budding superstar reportedly ,had her baby shower over the weekend in downtown Chicago, Hudson's fiancé is wrestler/I Love New York reality star David “Punk”Otunga. Hmm, we wonder if those throat problems during the first stint of her tour that was reported last month had anything to do with morning sickness? LOL
There are nine days left before the digital TV conversion will take place! .
There was no danger in sight last Friday when reality star Danger from The Love of Ray J' was a no show at MPAC’s Eye Candy party (SEE OUT 623 for pics) at its new location Mike Shannons in downtown St. Louis. Dubbed the Pink Edition, where ladies wearing pink were FREE all nite, Danger was supposed to host the contest portion of the party where volunteer females in the audience vied for the title Miss May and its prizes. But many disappointed fans were also not given an announcement or explanation of her not showing up. Yet alone, it was packed house and party went on. Hmm, we wonder at what point during the event did the promoters know that she wasn’t coming? Hmmm.
Souls were afire at Fox! by Ma'at Atkins
Anthony Hamilton was sharp in his GQ gear...for a while at least.LOL
Fox repeater Musiq was dapper and at his usual performance level.
Chrisette Michelle wowed the crowd with her jazzy vocals.
Last Sunday, the Fox Theatre was the spot where new school R&B singer Anthony Hamilton headlined a three hour night which also included Musiq Soulchild and opening act Chrisette Michelle. Hamilton (PICTURE BY CARLSTON EDWARDS) was the best of the three. Hamilton’s hour plus set was spiritual, energetic, and uplifting at the first note he sang. With his husky and grainy blues voice permeating and stripping pieces of his GQ outfit (his red velvet shirt was soaked with sweat near concerts end). Hamilton , along with his tight seven piece band, performed his newest hits off his latest CD The Point of it All including the title cut which opened his set. He also cranked out his other jams including, “Can’t Let Go,” Coming From Where I’m From “and his biggest hit,” Charlene.” A highlights was when he morphed into a Baptist preacher testyfyin and jumpin off stage to attempt to walk down half the isle of the Fox . Another was when he brought several big girls up on stage during his performance of his minor hit, “Sista Big Boned (with a beginning cover of the Fat Albert Theme with cartoon sounds added).” One of the sistas he brought up was STL singer Silky Sol (who was in her fiery dance mode). Before he left the stage, he asked the crowd to pray for his wife’’s brother who was deathly ill.

There has been a lot of movin and closin goin around this week. Good For the People’s Wednesday event Gray Area, that featured comics and poets has left F15teen. Its creator Jerrod Jones has yet to find another location but says it will be back up and running at another spot…. Also on Wednesdays, Soul U’s SoulSTAGE will be moving from The House of Comedy to Nubia Café which came effective today, Wednesday. The move was cuz of the House of Comedy preparing to move on Washington Ave…And the big newz and surprise was the abrupt cancellation of Soul Stylz’ popular Friday event Beautiful at Sleek Lounge and restaurant inside Lumiere Place. According to reports, the promoters of the event did not get any explanation of the demise but it was speculated it had to do with the overwhelming capacity that the event was attracting (ie. Black folk ). But its event creator Cornell Boone said to OUTTOWN that he may be a guest on The Demetrius Johnson Morning Show to talk about the issue at hand.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ: MTV MOVIE AWARDS. Why did they pick SNL’s Andy Sandberg to host? Why did Eminem agree to do the Bruno skit with the ass in his face? And why did Sandberg get naked in the Justin Timberalake digisode skit? Why was Soulja Boy eating chips during the telecast? Why was Meagan Fox looking stone faced when Sandberg ripped on her? Why was everything so staged leavin n o sense of real surprise? Why did actor Forrest Whitaker agree to do the Sandberg hist medley singing, “Dick in a Box?” Why was the tech Award winner’s grinding his Award funny? Why was actor Keifer Sutherland’s fake emotional breakdown during ben Stiller’s Award of Merit so annoying?
OTHER WHYZ: Why was comedian Bruce Bruce selling his tees after the shows at House of Comedy as though he needed the money? And why was LebronJames acting like a spoiled brat after his team lost in the playoffs?

KMJM personality Tammi Holland sent OUTTOWN an uplifting email from dress collector Tracie Ousley. It reads:There have been a lot of parents that have lost their jobs and have daughters that may not be able to participate in a day that you can never get back, their senior prom. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea.
