OUT 524--STL-TIDBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

This is Wednesday
The last OUTTOWN post for the year (I did say YEAR yawl. LOL) until January 6, 2009.

So besides the sleet we got this week, and folk “calling in gay” from work to protest the Prop 8 bill, here’s what’s been goin on in the newz and some of the stuff that folk will be talkin about when we return.

On a regional/local tip, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich returned to work on today, Wednesday, a day after he was arrested and accused of scheming to enrich himself by selling President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Blagojevich is out on bond and has denied any wrongdoing.

The governor left his home on Chicago's North Side early Wednesday and waved to the media before quickly getting into a dark SUV without talking to the reporters.
A short time later, Blagojevich's SUV arrived at his office

He and his chief of staff, John Harris, appeared Tuesday before a federal magistrate for his arraignment in Chicago after being arrested on charges of conspiring to get financial benefits through his authority to appoint a U.S. senator to fill the vacancy left by Barack Obama's election as President.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has no plans to resign after being indicted said Blagojevich's attorney Sheldon Sorosky outside the courthouse where the governor was arraigned. His attorney said that "He didn't do anything wrong. A lot of this is just politics." According to a federal criminal complaint, Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper's editorial board who had been critical of him fired.

A 76-page FBI affidavit said the 51-year-old Democratic governor was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

The affidavit said Blagojevich discussed getting a substantial salary for himself at a nonprofit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions.

It said that Blagojevich also talked about getting his wife placed on corporate boards where she might get $150,000 a year in director's fees.

He also allegedly discussed getting campaign funds for himself or possibly a post in the president's cabinet or an ambassadorship once he left the governor's office.

He went so far as to dare authorities to tape his phone calls if they thought he was guilty of anything. According to government insiders the feds have been investigating Governor Blagojevich for his known “pay to play” politics for several years. Authorities had bugged the governor’s campaign office and tapped his home phone, catching him talking about alleged plans to sell the U.S. Senate seat left empty by President-elect Barack Obama.

Among those being considered for the post include U.S. Reps. Danny Davis and Jesse Jackson Jr.

Blagojevich could still appoint someone to fill Obama's seat. Blagojevich would have to hurry because state lawmakers are racing to snatch away his power to appoint a new senator and put it in the hands of voters. Until state lawmakers call a special election, though, Blagojevich still has the power to fill the Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Obama.

Blagojevich also was charged with using his authority as governor in an attempt to squeeze out campaign contributions.

Corruption in the Blagojevich administration has been the focus of a federal investigation involving an alleged $7 million scheme aimed at squeezing kickbacks out of companies seeking business from the state. Federal prosecutors have acknowledged they're also investigating "serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud" under Blagojevich.

His hearing is scheduling for early January 2009. Blagojevich took the chief executive's office in 2003 after succeeding Gov. George Ryan who is currently serving time for wrongdoing . And today, Wednesday is Blagojevich's 52nd birthday.

Opinion makers have said that If Blagojevich decides not to resign, the Illinois state legislature could decide to impeach him. That would work as follows, per Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan's press secretary Steve Brown: (1) It would require someone to file a resolution; (2) there would then be hearings in the House; (3) there would then be a vote in the House; and (4) if the House votes to impeach, then there would be a trial in the Senate.

Illinois' lieutenant governor is Pat Quinn, a Democrat, who would replace Blagojevich if he's ousted from office.

Area legislators expressed shock and outrage at the news of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's arrest, and several urged him to step down or be impeached. Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna immediately called for Blagojevich to resign "for the good of the state, and in the interest of the taxpayer."

"If Gov. Blagojevich does not resign his position, we urge the General Assembly to move swiftly with impeachment proceedings," McKenna said in a statement.

For Barack Obama, the explosive scandal in his home state presents an unwanted diversion but no immediate political danger, analysts say.Even though allegations against Gov. Rod Blagojevich describe his desire for a deal with Obama, the criminal complaint offers no evidence that Obama or his aides were aware of potentially illegal offers.

U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said there was no evidence that Obama knew what was going on and Obama issued his own statement to that effect later.

President-elect Barack Obama is now calling for the Illinois governor to resign.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president-elect agrees with other prominent politicians in Illinois and elsewhere that "under the current circumstances, it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois."

"I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so I was not aware of what was happening," Obama said in Chicago after a meeting with Al Gore.

Nonetheless, the allegations involving his vacated seat pose perception problems for Obama at a moment he needs all the political capital he can muster. And in his news conference Tuesday, Fitzgerald pointed to "strands of the investigation, some of which you know about and some of which you don't."

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg said that for now, he doubts Obama will be tainted "unless his folks were involved in setting up some sort of deal that really smells."

Can we say Senate Seat Gate! Man, talk about The Political Couch (more like Seat) in play! This is ugly. And talk about timing. The Governor;’s arrest came on the same day that he was to appoint the next successor to Obama’s seat.
We are sure this will be one of the bigger stories starting of the new year! And what would be the odds that the current Governor and former Governor George Ryan be in prison at the same time for wrongdoing (that is if he’s pardoned by president Bush)

Well we guess they dont call her ILL-inois for nuthin!

And speaking of Obama, one STL aldermen is backing a bill for Barack Obama Boulevard. A hearing has been set for next week to decide whether Delmar Boulevard in St. Louis also will be known as "Barack Obama Boulevard." Alderman Kacie Starr Triplett (ABOVE PIC), an early Obama supporter whose ward includes a portion of Delmar, is leading a push to dedicate the street in honor of the president-elect. The designation would be purely ceremonial; on maps and other official documents, the street name would remain Delmar. However, under Triplett's plan, the city would erect signs at six intersections along Delmar, noting the street's dual designation as Obama Boulevard.

At last Friday's Board of Aldermen meeting, the plan was referred to the Streets Committee. The panel's chairman, Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr., will hold a hearing at 11 a.m. Thursday at City Hall.

If endorsed by the committee, the bill will move to the full board for final approval.

We heard Tripplett on the Tony Scott Show last week and she said that some business folk on Delmar were upset that the street change would affect their mailing addresses but she said that it will not because Delmar would still be Delmar and that the name change will be honorary. She also said the reason why Delmar was chosen because the Street represents several Wards that make up different socioeconomic and racial groups and hopes the special naming of the street would symbolize bridging those social gaps as Barack as done with his candidacy.

A cop killed himself Tuesday nite. According to stltoday.com, a St. Louis police officer was found shot late Tuesday, south of downtown, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The unidentified officer had been a member of the St. Louis Police Department for 2 1/2 years. The officer was found by a citizen about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tucker Boulevard and Park Avenue, just south of downtown. The officer was found behind Lasalle Park Baptist Church. The officer was taken to St. Louis University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. There were no further details as of this posting.

Also, according to the report, it's unclear if the officer's suicide is connected to an incident earlier Tuesday in which a city policeman was taken into custody for questioning in a child-pornography investigation. Shortly after he was picked up for questioning, that officer jumped from a city police car with his own gun and ran off -- in the same area where the dead officer was later found. City police weren't saying this morning if the officer who killed himself is the same officer who jumped from the police car and ran off.

Wow. Tragic indeed.

Three weeks after InBev completed its $52 billion takeover of Anheuser-Busch, the new company now called ABINBEVsaid Monday it would slash 1,400 salaried jobs, or 6 percent of its U.S. workforce in an effort to reduce costs.
About three fourths of the job losses will come at the company's St. Louis headquarters. The rest will occur at other locations and breweries, the Leuvens, Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev said in a statement issued around lunchtime on Monday. The company will also leave 250 open jobs unfilled and eliminate 415 contractor positions. Most of the job cuts will occur by year-end, the company said.InBev has long promised to keep all of A-B's U.S. breweries operating. At the same time, analysts predicted that deep cost cuts would be needed to justify the deal. Rumors about job losses grew louder in weeks leading up to and after the Nov. 18 acquisition, especially given Chief Executive Carlos Brito's reputation for a relentless focus on costs.

They will also be offered outplacement services and other benefits during the transition, the company said. The cuts come on top of more than 1,000 U.S. salaried employees who accepted early retirement. The retirements were part of a $1 billion cost-cutting plan called Blue Ocean that was announced by A-B during the summer.
Also, just announced Wednesday, today, Bud Productions, the in-house division that produced hundreds of play-by-play broadcasts of pro baseball, hockey and football, will shut down Jan. 1.

Well, the last chapter of one of the biggest stories in the STL has been written and mos definitely predicted.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe's neighborhood has seen nine homicides in 10 months this year, more than all but one other section of the city.

With gunplay wreaking havoc on his ward, Troupe thinks he has found an answer: citizens arming themselves.

The alderman is pleading with constituents to get guns of their own — and learn how to use them. Troupe, who represents a swatch of north St. Louis, is encouraging residents to apply for concealed weapons permits so they can start carrying a firearm.

The city's new police chief, among others, worries that introducing even more guns into high-crime areas is a recipe for greater turmoil, not less.
Troupe, however, says he has lost faith in the Police Department and is urging residents to take it upon themselves to protect their homes and property and has reportedly said , citizens have a right to own a gun, and they have a right to carry a gun.

The state Legislature approved Missouri's "conceal and carry" law in 2003. Troupe, a former state representative, says he supported concealed weapons legislation while in Jefferson City, and supports it now.He declined to say whether he carries a gun. He is encouraging others to do so because, he says, some parts of St. Louis are just too dangerous. Most of his digust occurred supposedly after the Nov. 5 slaying of St. Louis firefighter Leonard Riggins, shot during a carjacking by a someone he thought was a motorist in need of assistance. Though the shooting was north of the city line, the teenage gunman also had been questioned in a murder in Troupe's ward. Troupe is hoping to recruit residents from his 1st Ward and around the area to take a firearms safety course, a requirement to qualify for a concealed weapons permit. He has even made his pitch at City Hall — and he says several aldermen have expressed interest in obtaining a permit.
As we said last week, what’s going to come first—the gun training for the permit or carrying the gun itself? Will citizens really take time to get training after they purchase a gun legally or , in most cases, illegally. We are on the fence on this one. True, citizens should have the right to defend themselves when a trespasser breaks in ones home and does them physical harm, but the crime has to be fire meet fire. What will happen if citizens get gun happy just to be trigger happy? And in most cases, shooting a trespasser or an aggressive robber does not yield to shooting them. This is definitely one of the issues that will go into full bloom next year!

The media are calling her the A Grinch That Stole Christmas… for foster kids in FranklinCounty that is. According to,media reports, Union resident Ruth Gierer, 26, is a suspect is in custody for stealing nearly three thousand dollars in gift cards from a state office. The cards were meant to buy toys for the foster kids. Investigators say she worked in the same state office where the cards were stolen from. Investigators say they have the suspect on surveillance tape using the stolen cards at the Union Wal-Mart.
Gierer said nothing as Union Police took her to the Franklin County Jail. She is facing one count of felony stealing for taking the gift cards from the Children's Division of the Department of Social Services Office.Freedom of Road Riders,a motorcycle group, raised more than 27 hundred dollars at two fundraisers to buy the gift cards for the foster kids.
At one of the fundraisers last month, the group also collected toys that they took on a motorcycle caravan to the Children's Division of the Department of Social Services office in Union. The gift cards were dropped off at the same office.
Workers at the office reported the theft to Union Police on last Friday. The gift cards were in unlocked desk drawer in a secured area of the office. The gift cards were for ten dollars each and were for use at Wal-Mart and Target. Detectives say it's unclear when exactly the theft happened. The toys were not stolen.
Freedom for Road Riders is holding new fundraisers to get new gift cards for the foster kids this weekend.

This is beyond Grinch!

Beside the cop who kille dhimslef yesterday, the St. Louis police has been all over in in the news lately.

The city of St. Louis dedicated a monument to slain police officer Norvelle Brown last Saturday at the Wohl Recreation Center in north St. Louis sponsored by AmerenUE and the St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation. Brown was a 22-year-old rookie officer when he was gunned down in August 2007 while patrolling the same north city streets where he'd grown up.

In other police newz, former St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer, Bryan Pour was indicted by a Madison County grand Jury last Friday for his involvement in the Nov. 9 shooting of a Granite City man outside a Pontoon Beach bar. Pour was indicted on one count of aggravated battery with a firearm. Taken into custody by the Madison County Sheriff's Department, Pour posted $10,000 of his $100,000 bond last Friday and was released. The grand jury also ruled the Pontoon Beach Police Department officer was justified in shooting another St. Louis police officer who was at the bar.
On Nov. 9, Pour was involved in a dispute outside of Mac and Mick's Sports Bar and Grill on Nameoki Road. Jeffry Bladdick, 25, was attempting to diffuse the situation when Pour, who was reportedly intoxicated, shot him in the chest with his department-issued pistol, according to a statement issued by Madison County State's Attorney Bill Mudge.

On other STL police in court newz, testimony began this week against a man accused of being one of three who in 2006 fired more than 30 shots at two plainclothes St. Louis police officers, wounding one. Patrick Moore is on trial in St. Louis Circuit Court on charges of aggravated assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Officials said at the time that Moore may not have realized the two men in a parked unmarked car at College and Carter avenues about 1:15 a.m. Sept. 26, 2006, were officers. Court documents indicate that Moore admitted the shooting before his arrest, and thought his targets were people with whom he had an ongoing dispute. Officer Justin Johnson, 30, was hit in the arm and shoulder; his partner was not hurt.

And in even more STL police newz, city police expect several command-rank officers to retire in coming weeks, as some are losing tens of thousands of dollars from retirement accounts by staying, officials said.

The retirement system says about a dozen officers ranked lieutenant or higher are expected to follow last month's announcement that Assistant Chief Stephen Pollihan is retiring in January.

Because of the way the police retirement system is structured, insiders say more than three dozen officers can minimize financial hits by calling it a career — and soon.

It's not clear yet what impact the retirements will have on the department, which has about 80 officers ranked lieutenant or higher among 1,280 sworn officers.

Chief Daniel Isom said recently the department was only beginning to consider how to react. While the department would lose centuries of experience, Isom would have a rare opportunity to remake a command staff.

Pension funds for city employees, firefighters and police officers — all partly funded by taxpayers — were greatly depleted by this year's stock meltdown.

Hmmm, we guess the bright side on all of this is, employment for newer cops could occur but the darker side is less cops who got experience on their belt.

Hip Hop Hooray to the East St. Louis Flyers who won their first state championship in almost 20 years. Junior quarterback Detchauz Wray fired three second-half touchdown passes to lead a furious Flyers rally as East St. Louis captured its seventh state football title last Saturday with a 33-14 win over Geneva in the Class 7A championship game at Memorial Stadium.

The title is the first in 17 years for the Flyers, who last won a state championship -- in Class 6A -- in 1991. East St. Louis also won state championships in 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1989.

East St. Louis trailed 7-6 at halftime, but Wray fired scoring passes of 10 yards to Terry Hawthorne, 42 yards to Kraig Appleton and 10 yards to Keante Minor to highlight a 27-point second-half explosion.

Authorities on identified the victims as 48-year-old Jerry Nuckolls of High Ridge, Mo., 26-year-old Milton Dowell of Venice, Ill., and 23-year-old Rico Newsome of Madison, Ill. Another three was in the newz as well. The ones accused of robbing Fairmount Park racetrack almost got away with $170,000, according to court records.
Christopher Tongay, Cathy Lasich and Kathryn Holdener were charged last Monday in the Nov. 12 robbery, during which an employee was forced at gunpoint to open a safe.

Lasich, 47, of State Park Place, is a former racetrack employee and current owner of the Trading Post, a State Park Place convenience store. Holdener, 26, of Caseyville, worked for Lasich at the Trading Post, and Tongay, 29, of Caseyville, is her nephew.
Tongay is being held without bail because he was already out on bond pending charges relating to another armed robbery last year. On Monday, Madison County Associate Judge James Hackett set bail at $1 million each for Lasich and Holdener, and as of last Tuesday afternoon, they were still in custody at the County Jail.

Early applications for next fall put the University of Missouri on track for a record freshman class for the second year in a row. Some Missouri faculty are concerned that the large class comes at the same time the University of Missouri is trying to streamline and tighten its finances. According to U of M reports, the most recent enrollment figures include a 20.1 percent increase in applications compared with this time last year.

If those figures hold, Missouri could break the enrollment record set this academic year, when more than 5,800 freshmen enrolled, a 15.6 percent increase over the previous year.Korschgen said it is too early to decide whether Missouri will put an enrollment cap on applications, as it did last summer.

And lastly, OUTTOWN received an anonymous comment in regards to the blog post we reported on the firing and quitting of radio personalities Sylli Asz (who got fired) and Kaos (who supposedly quit) from 104.1 last month. Here is what that Anonymous commenter had to say:

Anonymous said...
Your information is all WRONG about the Kaos and Silly story. This site would be better if you do your research and report the facts instead of trusting people who really don't even know what is going on.

Try again and report back with the facts next week

And here is what we had to say about their comment:

First up, thank you for reading my post. Its apparent you read my blog on a regular.

Secondly, if you know the real scoop, then send it if you have the truth.

Thirdly, the bottom line is they are gone because of Sylli's behavior and Koas quitting because of it.

Fourthly, my site was better prior to this story and will be better after this story.
Fifth, why are you anonymous? If you claim what you are saying, give me a name.

Next, I will post your comment and see what the public gotta say.

Lastly, I dictate when I report a story.

Thank you and continue reading.

2.Which drunken socialite last weekend went up to a hot dog cart where a guy was selling dogs, picked up a hot dog that was grilling, ate a small portion of it and placed it back on the grill? 3.Which club owner team had all of its belongings from their club thrown out into the streets for non- payment of rent? (Hint: These owners have another club who’s former name was the club that was in trouble and that describes “who they are” and who’s newer club took a “letter off the color” of its name.

AND

4.Which socialite had a racially-tinged conversation with someone in the restroom about Obama winning on the night of elections results and a white man came in during the heated discussion? (Hint. The governor's arrest totally caught me off guard! It'll be interesting to see how corruption and politics play out in the Obama administration.

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism

or copyright infringement? My site has a lot of exclusive content

I've either created myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up

all over the web without my agreement. Do you know any ways to help reduce content from being stolen? I'd

definitely appreciate it.
