STL-TIDBITZ--I see that Craig Blac is back on the airwaves on the STL on 100.3 The Beat after being let go on WHHL 104.1. a few months ago...On Monday, legendary dancer the late Katherine Dunham was honored Monday, with the official dedication of the Katherine Dunham Post Office that took place at the Post Office located on Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis. President Bush signed that honor into law back in October. Dunham was a pioneering choreographer and leader in the African American community who adopted East St. Louis as her hometown. She died in May of 2006 at the age of 96.....Kudos also go outto East St. Lousi native filmmaker Warrington Hudlin who will be honored at this year's National Black Theater Festival in Winston Salem, NC . He will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award July 30...And speaking of the festival, The St. Louis Black Rep will be perforimng the August Wilson's play, "Gem of the Ocean." For more info on when it is performing go to its website (http://www.nbtf.org).... Looks like St. Louis is in the runnings of having a possible winner in this season's "Last Comic Standing." Those auditioning were Lavelle Crawford (who will be seen this week on the show) and St. Louisans Lavell Crawford and Amy Schumer (who advanced to the next round ).... Theres a serious rumor goin on about a popular socilaite in the STL area who allegedly has been charged for infecting women and men with the HIV virus. Again, this is just rumor, but, according to sources, it is true (and unfortunate) LATEST--Checkout www.stlamerican.com to get the real skinny on this from the Man himself ("Styles Interview"). who dipelled this rumor....Kudos to adopted St. Louisian and former Fashion editor of the St. Louis American Keith Underwood who has launched his own public relations firm in Los Angeles called, UMA Worldwide. To peep out his site go to http://www.umaworldwide.com ....Former East St. Louis cop John D. Boyd I hear is doin his thing as an actor these days. He is currently touring with the Los Angeles African American Rep's WEBEIME....Have you heard StL jazz artist Lamar Harris' new CD, Groove Theory" yet? For more info log onto www.jowilliemusic.com!.... Miss Millicent are you gettin nervous with your upcoming nuptials June 30? ...Oh, and I am soon going to to be celebrating two things early next month-- My B-day (Jul 6) and the 2nd year anniversary of my blog (July 8).
EDUCATION VIEWZ:
I hope you all were aware or at least conscious that June 19 was the 140 anniversary of Juneteenth, the annual celebration of Black freedom. For those unaware, Juneteeth dealt with the Emancipation Proclamation. Although it declared the official end of slavery on January 1, 1863, most enslaved Africans in America did not find out until much later. Among the last to find out were slaves in Galveston, Texas who did not learn of their freedom until Union soldiers marched into town on June 19, 1865.Upon hearing the news, Black people celebrated by laughing, crying, praying, and dancing in the streets for days. Although Juneteenth is only officially recognized as a holiday in the state of Texas, people throughout the country use the day to honor the Black freedom struggle.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.
Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.
JUST LIKE KWANZAA AND MLK DAY, ITS GOING TO TAKE A MINUTE FOR A BLACK HOLIDAY TO MAKE ITS RESONANCE IN MAINSTREAM. SO, LETS HOPE THE SAME GOE SFOR JUNETEENTH--AN AFRICAN AMERICAN DAY TO DO FIREWORKS!
