THE BIG STORY IN THE STL HAS BEEN THE SNOW! HOW MUCH SNOW DID YAWL GET(or shall we say thundersnow)? Folk in the STL County got close to or more than 10 inches. Those in the city got close to 8 inches and the Illinois area (East St. Louis and Belleville) got 5 inches. We knew somethin was goin to happen espcially after the 70 plus degree temps last weekend. Wetsher reports are saying we should get more snow this Friday, so hopefully, this will be nuff of this whole ish so we can get ready for the Spring, for real!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONT FORGET TO TURN THOSE WALL CLOCKS, WATCHES, CELL PHONES, CAR CLOCKS, VCR CLOCKS AND MICROWAVE CLOCKS UP ONE HOUR FORWARD THIS WEEEKND!
Another big story this week was the release of Cards utility player Scott Spezio. He got the axe after charges stemming from and after an arrest warrant was issued against him in Irvine, California. The warrant was issued on six charges relating to a car crash in December stemming from an alcohol related hit and run back . The warrant was recalled last Wednesday after Spiezio's attorney appeared in court, and the arraignment was continued to March 26. ( The 35-year-old Spiezio did not play in Wednesday's exhibition game against St. Louis University at Jupiter, Fla. In which they lost 5-4) Spiezio was entering the final season of a two-year, $4.5 million contract. That means the Cardinals owe him this year's $2.3 million salary plus a $100,000 buyout of a $2.5 million team option for 2009 — because of that, the likelihood of a grievance by the players' union is small. Spiezio will be remembered for the red soul patch and his many memorable plays in their push to a World Championship in 2006. Dayam, 2.3 mill???? He can buy a rehab center for that kind of money, hello?....................................Speaking of the Cards (we wont talk about their 0-3 exhibition “wreckord” here. LOL), veteran cardinal Ozzie Smith is expanding his restaurant franchise to Beale Street. Former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith and his business partners are looking to open several sports bars across the country and are eyeing a location on Beale Street in Memphis, Tenn. In St. Louis, Smith is a part owner in Ozzie's Restaurant and Sports Bar, which has five large-screen and 50 regular televisions and is at 645 Westport Plaza in St. Louis. Smith's group is considering a 6,900-square-foot space at 349 Beale, the only sizable available space left on the street. The two-story space with mezzanine at the southwest corner of Beale and Fourth Street used to house Have a Nice Day Cafe.
The other big news story was the St. Louis rams saying bye-bye to wide receiver vet player Isaac Bruce and hello to a new home last week. The four-time Pro Bowler has agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Bruce, who is also 35 (like Spezio) formally signed his two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers this past Tuesday, four days after agreeing to continue his 14-year career with the St. Louis Rams' longtime division rival.Bruce, who trails only Jerry Rice and Tim Brown in career receiving yardage, could be the 49ers' No. 1 receiver next season under offensive coordinator Mike Martz, the longtime architect of the Rams offense. The St. Louis Rams also released veteran defensive end James Hall Friday. OUTTOWN thinks the Rams mad e amistke for cutting Bruce. He was one of the loyal ones who did his thang on the grid iron. Oh well, then again, we are not surprised of this and how good players go off field(Got two words: Jerome Bettis)
So ladies, did yawl propose to that favorite man in your life during Sadie Hawkins day (Or was he already married and you didn’t care. LOL)?.............................

(2006’s Madea’s Family Reunion) and the second flick with Angela Bassett (1993’s What’s Love Got to do with it.” )....................... In other STL flick news, hip hop megastar Nelly can be seen on a documentary called “Framed” which tells the unique stories of some of today's top athletes from the perspective of some of Hollywood's hottest stars. It can be seen on the Independent film Channel. Check your local listings. Nelly is also casted to play in the prequel to King of the New York called "Pericle il Nero" (or The Black Smoke) centering on a powerful drug lord's rise to power in the 1970s.............................Nelly’s St. Lunatic bandmate Murphy Lee performed at Lush Nightclub last weekend at a party dubbed Blue Elements, The rap star did an impromptu finale with a few songs from his new CD “ You See Me.” The party was hosted by was hosted by St. Louis' Cheresse Ink.
The late Kirkwood resident Cookie Thornton had several hundreds of tickets that were issued to Kirkwood. It's been reported that Thornton felt city officials were harassing him and unfairly issuing tickets. The city fined Thornton for blades of grass being an inch too long. Others claimed he received 20 tickets a day. Citations dated back to 1996. In the past 12 years the City of Kirkwood issued 79 citations to Thornton. Most dealt with violations regarding his business, CookCo Construction. The city cited Thornton for improperly operating that business out of his Meacham Park home. The tickets ranged from illegally parking construction equipment in a residential area to failing to remove garbage. In 1996, the city issued four citations. In 1997 it was six citations. In 1998 Thornton received only one citation and in 1999 he received two. In that four year period, Thornton paid about 1000 dollars in fines. But in the years 2000 and 2001, the city issued 59 citations to Thornton. The city just wanted Thornton to comply with standard codes and ordinances. Hmmm, something about this just doesn’t smell right. Why would a city keep giving a man tickets and he was supposed to be such a good citizen to the city of Kirkwood? Something just doesn’t add up and I’m sure it will come out in the end of what was really goin on!
Both Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and Carbondale will launch new emergency alert systems that will send text messages to students' cell phones.. Students and staff at both SIU campuses will have the option of being alerted via their cell phones. The goal is to alert everyone when there's an on-campus emergency, ranging from severe weather to a campus-wide threat..................Also on the East Side, East St. Louis School District gave $100,000 to the city to help purchase five police cars for school resource officers. The money came from the federal Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. According to its Web site, the district is to get $1.33 million from this program over four years.

In an exciting partnership, The Black Rep and The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Theater will present the staggering and vibrant play, DEATH AND THE KING’S HORSEMAN, written by Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka, March 19 – April 13, 2008 at the Grandel Theatre, 3610 Grandel Square in
St. Louis, MO.
Considered by many to be Soyinka's greatest play, Death and the King’s Horseman is an intriguing and mystical play based on a true incident about a man caught in a struggle between two opposing cultural beliefs. According to a Yoruba tradition, the death of the Chief must be followed by the ritual suicide of the Chief's Horseman so that his spirit can continue to serve his master in the afterlife. The play focuses on the potent and life-loving Elesin, the King's Horseman of the title, who as part of the ritual is living his final days in celebration. At the last minute before the suicide, the local British colonial ruler, Mr. Pilkings intervenes, viewing the tradition as barbaric and illegal by the British authorities.
Death and The King's Horseman forges out of this story a metaphor not just for the whole history of Africa and its collision with colonial Europe but a profound meditation on the nature of man, the relationship of life with death and the power of religion, ritual and spirituality in human existence.
The production is directed by Segun Ojewuyi, a member of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Theatre faculty.
Ticket Pricing and Specials:
Single tickets range from $33 to $43. Three play subscriptions are $105 and are good for any show best available seat. Student rush tickets (30 minutes prior to curtain) are $10 with valid I.D. The Black Rep will continue its Target “Next Generation Family Series” this season where young people ages 8 -18 will be admitted free with the purchase of an adult ticket on Thursday evenings and at all Saturday matinee performances. Limit one child per adult.
