OUT 483--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

Wassup OUTTOWNERS!

It’s Wednesday

Its time for OUT TOWN.

Before we get to the new of newz

We just got two BREAKING NEWZ stories

Millionaire lawyer and former Metro East political power broker Tom Lakin was led out of federal court in handcuffs Wednesday morning after being sentenced to six years in prison on federal drug charges.

The prison term and $525,000 in fines, restitution and forfeitures Lakin was ordered to pay were no surprise – his lawyers had been negotiating with federal prosecutors for months to work out a deal and the details haven't changed since his guilty plea last month.

Long-time St. Louis Cardinals official George Kissell has died after being injured in a traffic accident in Florida. According to reports, St. Louis Cardinals' George Kissell, was seriously injured in an automobile accident Monday night Oct. 6, 2008 in Pinellas Park, Fla. Tampa General Hospital spokesman John Dunn confirmed the death today. It isn't immediately clear when Kissell died. Police say Kissell's daughter was driving her parents Monday night when she apparently ran a red light and was struck by another car. The 88-year-old Kissell was transferred to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. His daughter was treated and released. Kissell's wife was also in the car, but her condition isn't known. Kissell had been with the Cardinals organization since 1940. He was a major league coach from 1969 to 1975.

And we are still lookin for you. If you or someone you know qualify to be nominate das STL-LICIOUS of the week (aka. Got it goin on in looks and biz savvy), hit us up with a pic and a brief bio at
outtown62221@yahoo.com

And now to the newz:

Nationally, the main topic of discussion has been the 2nd Obama/Mccain debate held Tuesday in Tennessee, but locally, it has been the new STL police chief. On Monday, The Board of Police Commissioners named Col. Daniel Isom, a 20-year veteran of the Police Department, as the city's new police chief. Isom, 41, previously had been special projects assistant to the chief, responsible for planning the department's community-based efforts.
His time with the department has including work in internal affairs, the police academy, a detective bureau and in several of the city's police districts. He has been called “a man of integrity with a reputation for doing the right thing.”Former Chief Joe Mokwa retired July 25, after it was revealed his estranged daughter and police officers were allowed to borrow vehicles from a towing company which impounds cars for the city.
Assistant Chief Stephen Pollihan served as interim chief.Isom joined the department on Aug. 29, 1988, and is the city's 33rd police chief.
He has a doctorate and master's degree in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Missouri in St. Louis. He also has a master's degree in public administration from Saint Louis University.Isom also is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Isom was chosen because he was non partisan to the Towing scandal and to hopefully “untaint’ the image the police department has ensued since the scandal.

A middle school teacher in Kansas City, Mo. was suspended Monday for putting a video on YouTube of his students chanting lines from Barack Obama speeches and wearing military fatigues. The video, called "Obama Youth -- Junior Fraternity Regiment," was posted by a YouTube user named "keepitwildtv" on Oct. 2. The school learned the video was on the Internet and took action against the teacher Monday morning.Joyce McGautha, superintendent of the Urban Community Leadership Academy, a charter school for students in fifth through ninth grades in Kansas City, Mo., said that the video was probably taken last May during the Junior Fraternity's morning meeting at the school. She would not disclose the teacher's name.
Students at the school have 30-minute group sessions four times a week during which they are supposed to work on reading and writing. Once a week they are allowed to have activities. There are 12 groups at the public charter school. The Junior Fraternity students studied Obama's economic plan with the teacher, and the superintendent did not know whether the teacher or the students scripted the routine. The group should have also studied John McCain's economic plan, the superintendent said. In the video, eighth- and ninth-graders wearing military camouflage pants and navy t-shirts chant and perform a routine in the style of a step show.
The students enter the room chanting "Alpha. Omega. Alpha. Omega." Then, one at a time, they state things they were "inspired" to do by Barack Obama, including becoming an architect and a sheriff. At the end of the video, the students make statements about Obama's healthcare plan. She said she was aware of the video, and that many of the school's activities are recorded, but that the teacher had been warned in a letter not to put it on the Internet. If he did, she said, he should seek legal counsel. The teacher's fate will be taken up by the charter school's board, she said.\
What do you think? We think that if the teacher violated policy of putting the video on the Internet, then the teacher should be punished. But the flack has been whether the teacher should have set up this program on tax dollars and violating freedom of speech. Well, its better that this group of students are doing something positive. We see so much on programs to rehab a child thru juvey or detention, that something as far as raising self awareness should not be attacked.

The StL is still reeling over the palin-Biden debate that was held in the Lou at Wash u last week. The debate between
Sarah Palin and Joe Biden reportedly drew nearly 70 million U.S. television viewers, far more than the John McCain-Barack Obama bout, making it the most watched vice presidential debate ever, according to ratings issued on last Friday.

The television audience for the Republican Palin and Democrat Biden also was the biggest for any nationally televised political debate in 16 years, going back to a face-off among then-President George H.W. Bush, Democrat Bill Clinton and independent Ross Perot.

Their three-way match in October 1992, like the Palin-Biden contest, pulled in 69.9 million viewers, Nielsen Media Research said.

The tally for the Palin-Biden bout in St. Louis on Thursday night easily eclipsed the 52.4 million viewers who tuned in last Friday for the first debate between the Republican presidential nominee McCain and Democrat Obama.
The most watched televised presidential debate on record was the 1976 bout between President Jimmy Carter and his Republican challenger, Ronald Reagan, which drew 80.6 million viewers.

The Palin-Biden debate still earns a place in the Nielsen record books as the most watched ever between vice presidential candidates, eclipsing the old benchmark held by the first woman on a major-party ticket, Geraldine Ferraro, and the Republican incumbent at the time, George H.W. Bush. Their showdown in 1984 averaged 56.7 million viewers.
A larger-than-usual TV audience was expected for Palin and Biden going into their debate given the questions raised about the Alaska governor's readiness and the widespread lampooning of her previous appearances in the media. Snap polls by CBS and CNN said most viewers thought Biden, who curbed his tendency to be verbose and maintained a respectful tone toward Palin, won the debate.

And according to a undisclosed source, Palin was reading her debate answers from a script at the podium.
AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PARODY was HEEEELARIOUS!
After the debate, there were two afterparties for both VP candidates. For Biden it was held at the Pageant (He did not attend because he had to fly back to Delaware to get back in time to attend and speak at Friday morning's deployment ceremony for his son, Beau's unit in Dover). For Palin it was held at Chafetz Stadium where it was packed to the raptors (We even saw SLU students walking across Grand to get there) where she made an appearance.

In related news, several of the celebs and national journalists were spotted during their brief stay here in St. Louis for the debates. CBS Evening News Katie Couric was spotted as she lunched Thursday with a network news crew at Cielo in the Four Seasons Hotel. Over at Morton's The Steakhouse in Clayton, St. Louis native actress Kate Capshawhad dinner with her mother after they attended the VP debate. At SLeeK steakhouse at Lumière Place Fred Thompson, former GOP senator from Tennessee and star on "Law & Order," had dinner there and independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut . Sure is fun when St. Lou is at the center of things! Ashley Biden, daughter of Joe, prevailed upon Jen Gray, owner of Washington Avenue 's chic The Time Boutique, to unlock her store Thursday night for an after-hours stop.

In unrelated Biden news, Joe Biden will spend two days in Missouri this week.
On Thursday, October 9, Biden will hold events in St. Joseph, Liberty, and Jefferson City, Missouri. On Friday, October 10, Senator Biden will hold an event in the Springfield area.

Wells Fargo on Friday sparked a regulatory and legal dispute with a surprise $15.1bn all-share offer for Wachovia, trumping Citigroup’s $2.2bn government-aided deal to buy most of the sixth-biggest US lender. Stunned Citigroup officials – who first heard of the Wells deal just before dawn on Friday – threatened to seek an injunction to stop the transaction or demand substantial damages.

People close to Citi said the government bail-out plan approved by Congress on Friday contained a provision that might invalidate the Wells deal. They were considering invoking the clause – which says transactions approved by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation cannot be broken by a third party – to block the Wells move in court.

The FDIC backed Citi’s deal with the pledge to pick up billions of dollars in losses on Wachovia’s mortgage assets.

Citi, which was left as the only bidder after San Francisco-based Wells abandoned talks with Wachovia last weekend, was also considering whether to raise its offer, with a decision expected in days, people close to the situation said. The extraordinary turn of events left regulators and officials scrambling to resolve the tug-of-war over Wachovia, whose shares had plunged amid fears over its mortgage assets.

Check out down further on this post on what we had to say about Wachovia.

Missouri Senator Clair McCaskill told
the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last week that the American people don't know much about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin “and she is now being thrust on a stage without a script and everyone is curious about how much she knows." More pointedly, McCaskill said of Palin's opponent, Sen. Joe Biden, Del., that he “has a tendency to talk forever and sometimes say things that are kind of stupid.” “He a regular guy and … he doesn’t parse his words and he’s not hyper-careful,” she said. “He’s very authentic."
She then seemed to regret what she'd said. “I was probably having a Joe Biden moment myself,” McCaskill said of her candid moment minutes before.

Hmmm.

MoDOT has announced the construction of Interstate 64 is ahead of schedule. The closed section of Interstate 64 between I-270 and I-170 is set to re-open by late November or early December.Yesterday, Gateway Constructors poured the last major stretch of the main driving lanes of I-64, between Spoede Road and Lindbergh Boulevard. "We are confident we can meet the schedule of reopening the west end of I-64 by December 31 and we are pushing hard to be ready as early as late November," said Pete Rahn MoDOT Director. "All of us at MoDOT have been impressed with Gateway Constructor's work. They have accomplished this great progress despite the rainiest year on record."
And they thought the STL were not goin to adjust in January 2008. HA!

Now that the Rams had its BYE WEEK, do you think the rams can pull off a win this Sunday when they play against The Washington Redskins? Or will it be goosegg and cinqo? In unrelated rams news, right before the BYE week, the St. Louis Rams on Monday placed tight end Randy McMichael on injured reserve with a broken right leg. As of today, McMichael will be lost for the rest of the season.Third-year player Joe Klopfenstein will start at tight end, beginning Sunday at Washington. McMichael was injured in a 31-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on September 28. Despite their woes, the Rams are just two games out of first place in the NFC West according to reports.

Wachovia’s philanthropic arm plans to give the
Saint Louis Zoo $2.5 million to overhaul the south entrance with a pedestrian bridge and improve aesthetics with animal sculptures.

The Wachovia Foundation’s gift, along with a $5 million appropriation in 2006 from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Treasury, Judiciary, Housing and Urban Development and Related Appropriations Act, will finance the project, which includes a new bridge that will span Wells Drive, allowing for pedestrians, strollers and wheelchairs to pass from the south parking lot to the zoo entrance.

To accommodate the bridge, the zoo’s iconic Z-O-O sculpture will be moved to a prominent spot on the parking lot, and Wells Drive pavement will be lowered.
Hmmm, interesting that Wachovia got money for renovations for a zoo, but cant bail itself out of its debts. Whats really goin on?

Late last month, Academy Award nominated actor and Kansas city native Don Cheadle visited St. Louis. Inside the MSC at University of Missouri—St. Louis, was packed with students hoping to get a glimpse of actor. Cheadle came to UM-St. Louis after visiting Missouri universities in both his hometown and Columbia. He also visited a university that was not on his list of stops, Wash U, which was a mistake that caused excited students to wait from 3 p.m. (when the event was scheduled to begin) until about 5 p.m. when the actor arrived.Cheadle officially came to discuss voting in the upcoming presidential election, and he also spoke of his endorsement of Barack Obama. Cheadle told the MSC full of students that he first met Senator Obama when he was working on helping the people of Darfur. In fact, the Illinois senator wrote the introduction to Cheadle's book (co written with activist John Prendergast), "Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond". "This is a very unique time not just for our country, but for the world," Cheadle said to the crowd. "Obama is not taking this opportunity for granted."

Two St. Louis area natives hit the stages in Kansas city, Mo. for their respective tours.

Adopted East St. Louisan music veteran Tina Turner After an eight-year hiatus, Tina Turner brought her famous voice and energy back to the stage Wednesday, opening her 36-date North American tour with a hit-filled concert at the Sprint Center. She performed in front of a sold out crowd for over 150 minutes (including a 30 minute intermission.) Her show included all of her greatest hits. At 68, Tina performed with the ease, grace and energy of someone half her age and showed the world that Tina still has it.[The tour continues throughout the US and Europe (with a second return visit to Kansas City on October 8th.) Tina Turner noted at the concert's opening night that she spent a month in Kansas City preparing for her latest world tour
The 68-year-old singer said it was the right time to hit the road.

"It has to be now," she said. "I can still do it. (I'm) still in shape enough physically, mentally and I think this was about the best time to do it."

The second is singer Theo Peoples (SEEN ON THE RIGHT). Peoples along with the remaining members of the Four tops began its tour Sept 28 in Kansas City at the Starlight Theatre along with the remaining members of the Temptations (a group that he also sang with prior to joining the Four tops). Unlike Turner’s tour that has received raves, , they did not fare as well. According to the Kansas City star, The quartet drew its biggest applause from a tour-de-force cover of Heat Wave’s “Always and Forever” that included a long, spoken introduction and tender, affecting vocals from lead singer Levi Stubbs’ replacement, Theo Peoples. Well, we’ll see in the St. Louis area when they take a detour of their tour (How’s that for a play on words?) when they perform sans the Tempts Oct 23 at the Ameristar casino in St. Charles.

OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE.

We were perusing through the sites and found out a story on stlhiiphop.com about the supposed troubled STL rapper, J-Kwon that was sent to them via Get It Magazine

The following is a synopsis of that evocative article:

“It all started from talking to a female I know, that I was talking to on MySpace.com. She told me how she was talking to the real J-Kwon on myspace. I brushed it off until I talked to another female who shared the same experience with some negative feedback she shared. The way they met and the conversations they had were exactly the same. It soon builded to 6 females with the same experience. They ALL held conversations, with some even going to meet J-Kwon. The thing that made their stories link was the infamous email address bhoodhop@gmail.com . I talked to alot of women that were sending him naked pictures of themselves.

He often requested pictures AFTER he had sex with these females. I started doing my own research and contacting some of the people on his friends lists. This is where the monster was unleashed. From what I learned - it appears J-Kwon was dropped from So So Def, and put on the shelf at Jive Records. He then started making a comeback that came to a crash and burn.

From all the females I interviewed, J-Kwon was using EVERYONE he met online or in person. He had females doing banners, advertisements, driving him around, and running errands for him. The females THOUGHT they were either being a friend or getting into a relationship with J-Kwon. MOST of the women turned and ran the other direction as soon as he started asking to borrow money. My research became somewhat personal because I knew some of the people that were working for or with J-Kwon. I knew certain Djs that were playing his new songs, and some of the people helping promote his comeback. So I dug even deeper.
I found out J-Kwon wasn't paying ANYONE. He doesn't pay his barber, and didn't pay his PR people, artists, producers or management. Absolutely NO ONE was getting paid!!!............
Radio stations were asking for interviews and J-Kwon was not showing up or making the calls that he was suppose to do. There were several photographers I talked to that said he argued over money they were owed. He didn't want to pay up, he rather go on the boat and go gamble………….His crew that were waiting around for deals started leaving to go find jobs. No one was getting paid for the work they did to promote him. As I was told by several very angry women and men, "HE RATHER SPEND HIS MONEY ON SNORTING COKE, THAN PAY ANYONE!".

………From Hot 104 to 100.3 the Beat, i found Djs that had bad run in's with J-Kwon…………On the surface no one would say anything bad upfront, but the message I got was, we don't $%^ with that drug addict kid. I assume JD wiped his hands clean of him, and Trackboys did the same.

Allhiphop.com tried to reach J Kwon for a comment and said they could not reach J-Kwon for a comment because “he is currently locked up for unpaid child support.”

Oh wow. If these allegations are true, it is unfortunate for someone as talented as J Kwon to be the first of the STL Hip hoparatti to go down in flames.

Last Wednesday night, Sikeston, Missouri’s Neal E. Boyd insurance salesman turned opera singer won America’s Got Talent, netting a tidy $1 million prize and a show in Las Vegas. The University of Missouri singer had tears streaming down, receiving congratulations from Placido Domingo (via tape), Boyd wondered, "What has happened to my life?"

But he got it together enough to sing "Nessun Dorma" to close the show's third season, bringing finale tears to David Hasselhoff's eyes (and many others').
Boyd's win over singer songwriter Eli Mattson, 26, was what host Jerry Springer called "the closest result we've ever had, with less than one half of one percent between these two."
His mother noticed his beautiful voice at a young age, but singing didn't become Neal's passion until high school.Neal has followed his dream ever since and it took him to the national spotlight as the winner of America's Got Talent.
Friends and family gathered in Sikeston to watch the show's finale Wednesday night. Neal is an opera singer, and on the show he said he was surprised fans embraced the genre of music.
The winner was decided by a vote of the audience.
Meanwhile, others gathered at a watch party on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University where Boyd was a graduate and member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

This Weekend @ STL House Of Comedy
Marvin Dixon (Oct 9 - 12) Click Here For Free Pass I am a Comic View, Def Jam favorite, and I'm rapidly becoming one of the most talked about comics around. I have a great knack for revealing the humor of everyday life. I've always been a physical person. I've always expressed my things through mannerisms and facial expressions rather than speaking. I have performed with Leon ("The Five Heartbeats" and "The Temptations), Monica Calhoun ("The Players Club" and "The Best Man"), and Mel Jackson ("Soul Food" and "Deliver Us From Eva"). Television viewers know me for my appearances on Showtime's Comedy Club Network, The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show, Comedy Central's Make Me Laugh, Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam and as the 2002 host for BET's Comic View. And for those of you who love the straight to video urban flicks, he was the funny hotel manager in Miguel Nunez' forthcoming film, Up Against the 8-Ball. CABARET ST. LOUIS

Cabaret St. Louis is coming in October. The inaugural Cabaret St. Louis fall lineup will include Fran Landesman, Steve Ross, Sylvia McNair, Lee Lessack and Tony Sandler. Performances will be held at The Sheldon, Kranzberg Arts Center, The Gaslight Theatre plus additional venues. All shows begin at 8 p.m. Tickets on sale at all MetroTix locations.

FRAN LANDESMAN returns to her roots October 22-25 at The Gaslight Theatre. The legendary proprietess of Gaslight Square’s Crystal Palace presented such artists as Barbra Streisand, The Smothers Brothers and Elaine May. But outside of St. Louis, Ms. Landesman is most well known for her own songs and shows. Spring Can Hang You Up The Most and The Ballad Of The Sad Young Man became standards and were recorded by Elle Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand and Sarah Vaughn. Fifty years later, accompanied by her son Myles, and around the corner from the old Crystal Palace, this top songwriter and cultural icon will treat St. Louis to an evening of storytelling and song. Tickets for Fran Landesman are $35.
The smartest of the smart set and St. Louis favorite, STEVE ROSS, returns with his latest work, “To Wit: Ross on Wry – Funny Songs Throughout The Ages,” October 1-4 at the new Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center. Ross is no stranger to St. Louis, as he has performed many times at The Grand Center Cabaret, Cabaret in The Savoy Room and St. Louis Muny. After Ross’s 2004 St. Louis appearance, Chuck Lavazzi of KDHX Radio wrote, “The fact is, Mr. Ross has a breezy elegance on stage that’s reminiscent of Fred Astaire, Noel Coward, Cole Porter and, above all, the late and much lamented Bobby Short.” Tickets for Steve Ross are $40.
Cabaret at The Sheldon will host Grammy Winner SYLVIA MCNAIR October 16-17 for two performances only. A beloved performer at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Ms. McNair has segued from opera to the Great American Songbook, the music with which she feels most at home. Now, instead of singing V'adoro pupille on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, she's singing Embraceable You to rave reviews. Of McNair's Algonquin Oak Room debut, Rex Reed wrote, "Her phrasing is exemplary. Her modulations are inspired. I could get used to this kind of ecstasy." Tickets for Sylvia McNair are $45.
LEE LESSACK’S lyric baritone vocals and sophisticated yet endearing persona have made him a shining star of the international cabaret scene. His tribute to Johnny Mercer, “Too Marvelous For Words,” runs October 29-November 1 at the Kranzberg Arts Center. As we celebrate the centennial of Mercer, Lessack is the perfect match for this romantic of songwriters. Billboard Magazine calls his singing, "Cabaret romanticism of a high order." Tickets for Lee Lessack are $30.

TONY SANDLER finishes the CSTL Fall season November 13-14 at The Sheldon with “Chevalier-Maurice & Me.” This show is neither caricature nor impersonation, but a heartfelt homage to this widely-admired entertainer. It has been the subject of a PBS special and DVD, and contains the charm and savoir faire that Maurice himself brought to film and stage. Tickets for Tony Sandler are $40.Tickets for all five Cabaret St. Louis performances go on sale Tuesday, September 2 at 10 a.m. at all MetroTix locations. To charge by phone call 314-534-1111 or online at http://www.metrotix.com/. Memberships available by calling 314-726-1616. Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say that you've done a excellent job
with this. In addition, the blog loads super fast for me on Chrome.
Superb Blog!
