Its time to get OUT…TOWN
Before we get into what’s new in the newz, we here at OUTTOWN is introducing a new segment that our readers can participate in called STL-ICIOUS. For more info go to OUT 458 for all the details!
Next that we wanna get into before the STL newz are the passing of two legendary entertainers who passed days apart last weekend. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. As of now, you all have seen all the tributes and write ups of their lives and contributions and how they died but now its all about the investigations and arrangements for the public viewings. According his publicist Danica Smith., Mac lived with sarcoidosis for 25 years, but the rare lung disease that predominately affects African
Americans, reportedly went into remission in 2005. His publicist said the disease didn’t have anything to do with hisdeath, but Dr. Marc Siegal, a Hollywood doctor on Fox 2’s MJ Morning Show thought differently. Reportedly, he said,
“I believe that sarcoidosis played a major role in his death. It scars the lungs and populates them with inflammation and keeps themfrom being their own vacuum and pneumonia puts fluid on the lungs,” Bernie Mac had double pneumonia in 2004 and once showed up to a TV interview in a wheel chair with oxygen tubes in his nostrils. Rumors ran rampant that the funnyman had AIDS because of his bouts with pneumonia. Bernie Mac’s publicist reportedly said no other details were available regarding his untimely death and asked that his family’s privacy b e respected. According to panachereport.com, Mac’s wife, Rhonda, begged Mac to not leave her as he motioned as a response to her begs and pleads. The 2008 Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago, on the day he died, was dedicated to his memory. OUTTOWN also got info from a disclosed source before Mac’s death that a Chicago hospital worker who knew the family and who worked in the hospital that Mac was being treated that Mac’s health was much worse off than what the public knew and the family didn’t want it known of his deteriorating health. A public memorial for late comedian Bernie Mac will be held Saturday in Chicago. Services are scheduled for noon in the 10,000-seat House of Hope at 752 E. 114th St. Donations in Mac's honor may be sent to: The Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis40 E. 9th St., Suite 601 Chicago, IL 60605.
Then a day later, soul legend Isaac Hayes died. Although the autopsy is not complete, authorities in Memphis announced yesterday that soul legend Isaac Hayes apparently died of a stroke (it was reported and confirmed by Hayes that he suffered a stroke in 2006) No official determination has been released by the medical examiner's office or filed with the Memphis health department, which issues death certificates. A memorial service will be held in Cordova, Tennessee on Monday at Hope Presbyterian Church (8500 Walnut Grove) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The irony of both of these legends passing was that both were working on the film, Soul Men, which included actor Samuel L. Jackson . Director Malcolm Lee (Spike Lee's cousin) is re-editing his new movie "Soul Men," in a bid to honor late stars Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.
In other regional newz, Kanye West is to launch a chain of burger restaurants in his native Chicago, Illinois. Executives at the rapper’s company, KW Foods LLC, have purchased the rights to the North American Fatburger franchise to develop 10 fast food joints in Chicago. The first Chicago-area Fatburger is slated to open next month in southwest suburban Orland Park.
And now the STL newz:
On Tuesday, FBI agents raided St. Louis Metropolitan Towing, the company at the center of a scandal involving the daughter of the former St. Louis Police Chief.FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents arrived at the towing company across the street from the tow lot. Federal investigators were looking into the Police Department's relationship with the towing company, which held a lucrative contract with the department. Joe Mokwa retired as the Police Chief last month after a firestorm erupted over his daughter, Aimie Mokwa, and her use of vehicles from the towing company. The federal agents set up a command post vehicle right outside the company's offices. Agents searched inside the building and stood guard at the gate. Mokwa's retirement came a week after the St. Louis Police Board revealed it had hired a private law firm, Armstrong Teasdale, to investigate Aimie Mokwa's use of previously impounded vehicles from the towing company. The board said then it would no longer use the company. The law firm reported that Aimie Mokwa and an unknown number of police officers had been allowed to use vehicles for weeks or months. FBI agents this morning raided the offices of St. Louis Metropolitan Towing., the company that provided previously impounded cars to the daughter of the former St. Louis police chief. Federal investigators are looking into the St. Louis police department's relationship with the towing company, which held a lucrative contract to impound thousands of vehicles a year.
Those unclaimed after 30 days could be sold by the firm, which kept the profits. FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents were also searching the towing company's offices at its second impound lot on 13th street, as well as an affiliated company, Mo-Jo's Towing in Kirkwood. Beyond raiding the towing company, the FBI is asking for the public's help in documenting the company's dealings with vehicle owners. The FBI posted a survey on its website asking for information from anyone whose vehicles were towed by St. Louis Metropolitan Towing or its affiliated companies, S&H Parking or Parks Auto Sales, in the past five years. The survey can be found at http://stlouis.fbi.gov/publiccorruptionsurvey.htm. Vehicle owners can also call the FBI at 800-CALL-FBI. You know they are gonna have a flood of complaints especially those who got some revenge of getting their cars towed.
Back to School is here for some but after Labor Day all local schools — including parochial and private — will be in session. Can parents say Hallellujur!
Missouri Rep. Scott Muschany, R-Frontenac, was indicted last Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl early in the morning on May 17, hours after this year's legislative session ended. The alleged victim is the daughter of a state employee. The girl's mother and Muschany — who is married and has two children — were involved romantically, the woman said. A Cole County grand jury returned an indictment charging Muschany with the Class C felony of "deviate sexual assault." The indictment identifies the victim only by initials. It says that on May 17, Muschany "had deviate sexual intercourse" with the girl, "knowing that he did so without" her consent. The charge carries a potential prison term of up to seven years and a fine of up to $5,000.
Police found two teenage girls who were missing from the Pine Lawn area. Dogs were involved in the search that ended Tuesday afternoon with the two girls, ages 12 and 15, being located in the basement of a St. Louis City home. Police say the two teens went to the home willingly. Neither was harmed. The girls have been reunited with their mother. Both are from University City and had been visiting their grandmother in Pine Lawn when they went missing. Pine Lawn police had called in Eureaka’s search and rescue team for help them search vacant buildings in the area. What’s weird about this case is, when the police found the girls, they were in a house with several other teens with the oldest being eighteen. Hmmm, what’s really goin on?
On Monday former Fire Chief Sherman George learned he had lost a first-round battle in his effort to seek justice from Mayor Francis G. Slay and the City of St. Louis, but he said it was a battle he had expected to lose.He said the fight will continue - and he and his lawyer don’t expect for the matter to be adjudicated conclusively until it reaches the Missouri Court of Appeals. In a 20-page decision, the commission said it had concluded that George “was demoted for good and just cause,” citing Rule IX, Section 3(a)(4) of the City’s Civil Service Rules. The commission said the decision to demote George on October 1, 2007 “is hereby affirmed and upheld.” George believed his demotion was in effect a termination and retired soon after.
Pine Lawn police are investigating what happened between the Wellston police chief and his assistant police chief that led to a physical altercation. And it left the Wellston mayor in need of medical attention. The incident happened last Friday afternoon at the Wellston police department. Witnesses tell FOX 2 the pair was possibly arguing over recent personnel changes. The mayor of Wellston tried to step in and break up the fight when he suffered a minor injury. An ambulance was called and he was treated outside the police station. Pine Lawn police say a weapon was drawn during the altercation, but did not say who drew the weapon. The assistant police chief has been suspended. Both the police chief and assistant police chief are said to want to file charges. Pine Lawn police say they will conduct a full investigation and turn their results over to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s office. Hear say is saying that it had to do with jealousy of the new assistant police chief being hired and the old assistant police chief being fired. Wow, TMP!
According to police a taxi driver was not only robbed of his cab, but he was forced to disrobe and left in his underwear. The crime took place in the 4400 block of Washington early Tuesday. The cab driver said that at 1:29 a.m. a man pointed a gun at him, took some money, made him strip to his boxer shorts and fled in the driver’s cab. The victim is an employee of the St. Louis/Yellow Cab Company. The logs at the company show that the cab driver had picked up a fare in the 5800 block of Minerva Avenue in the city's Hamilton Heights neighborhood.
As the Olympics continue, folk are still talking about the death of Todd Bachman,(PICTURED ON LEFT OF PIC)keville, Minn., who had been stabbed to death during an apparent robbery attempt by a Chinese resident who later killed himself while in Beijing for the Olympics.. His wife, Barbara, while trying to help him, had been seriously wounded in the attack that also injured an unnamed Chinese tour guide. Bachman had St. Louis ties. He was on the board of directors of Edwardsville, Ill. based Hortica Insurance & Employee Benefits, since 1996.
Hundreds of local members of the United Auto Workers union are expected to rally near Chrysler LLC's headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich., on Thursday. More than 400 UAW members will travel to the Detroit area tonite, Wednesday night and join with about 500 additional auto workers to "show the UAW's dissatisfaction" with the automaker's June 30 announcement to indefinitely idle the Fenton minivan plant Oct. 31 and trim the number of shifts at the adjacent pickup plant by next month from two to one. Between the two plants, about 2,400 local Chrysler workers will be laid off. Workers plan to rally Wednesday evening in Fenton before leaving for the Chrysler headquarters.
Angry Olivette residents protested Tuesday complaining that its city hall is spending a hundred thousand dollars for a park project in their neighborhood that will make the community worse. The city is building a Pavillion in a tiny neighborhood park in the middle of the Indian Meadows subdivision. Neighbors have already had trouble with an unwanted element congregating in the park and fear adding amenities like a pavillion and restroom will just attract more undesirables to the park that's just 50 feet from some of their homes. They've told city hall they don't want it. The answer they get. It's been in the works and it's too late to stop it. For their part citizens aren't backing down from the fight and got a petition drive with over 200 signatures and climbing.
A new camera is installed on Clayton and Hanley Road to curb traffic violations in that intersection. But, there are two city limits that will deal with violaters. . As of today, running a red light at Clayton and Hanley will cost you, but you might be confused as to who will be collecting. One street Clayton you get fines 100. You get caught on Hanley you get fined by the Richmond Heights 106 dollars plus 26 dollar court fine. Hmm, it makes you wonder why the cameras were really put there. Was it cuz the more money that two limits could collect quickly? Hmmm.
Investigators are looking for thousands of dollars of stereo equipment that belonged to a 37-year-old man found killed over the weekend in East St. Louis. Authorities hope the sound system that was in Andrew Bethman's SUV leads them to who killed the St. Charles County, Missouri, man. Bethman's body was found Saturday near an East St. Louis church, nearly two weeks after he was reported missing. His family is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads authorities to his killer. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Baue (BOW'-ee) Funeral Home in St. Charles, Missouri.
A bill by a Town and Country alderman to ban drivers from using cell phones on the road died Monday night after other aldermen excoriated him for not first consulting them, police or the public before introducing the proposal."It wasn't dead on arrival, it was dead on the spot for a lack of a second," said Alderman John Hoffmann, who had placed it on the agenda. "I'm not surprised," he added, saying he had run for election as a "maverick."After the meeting, he said aldermen showed "a lack of concern for public safety."Under Hoffmann's "Hang Up and Drive" bill, drivers would have been banned from using hand-held cell phones or text messaging except in emergencies. Hands-free devices would have been allowed. Hoffmann introduced the bill in part in response to a deadly traffic accident on Highway 40 (Interstate 64) last month that killed three people and injured 15 others. Investigators are looking into whether cell phone use contributed to the crash July 15, when a tractor-trailer driver lost control and crashed into a line of slowed traffic near the interchange with Interstate 270. Hoffman said he had received numerous e-mails and phone calls of support and will bring it back up through proper procedure. Newly primary elect representative Talib El-Amin is supporting a state ban.
Concourse A at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport was briefly evacuated Wednesday afternoon after reports of smoke in the concourse.
A park in Maplewood will be named after a rookie firefighter who was gunned down on the job last month. The city council on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to change the name of Junior High Park to Ryan Hummert Park. Hummert was just 22 when he was shot and killed while responding to a vehicle fire. Two police officers were also wounded in the ambush. The council is also considering building a memorial for Hummert at the park.
There were paratroopers jumping into the southern part of St. Louis County Tuesday! This was a demonstration jump that marked the kick off of the 82nd Airborne's reunion and convention in St. Louis this week. The unit is one of the most storied in the U.S. Army.
More than 350 animals are being treated, cleaned and cared for by the Humane Society of Missouri. It’s part of that groups largest rescue on record. The animals were seized by rescue workers today on a property in Polk County about 200 miles southwest of St. Louis.
Korte Co. has pulled out of a proposed $4 billion office park at the Downtown St. Louis Airport in Cahokia. The Highland-based company released a statement Wednesday stating that it "withdrew its team" from the Martin Aviation Group Office Condominium Airpark project to "pursue additional design-build, construction interests that have been presented over the past several months."Martin Aviation wants to build about 4 million square feet of luxury, for-sale office space. The 17,000 to 150,000 square feet condos would come with a starting price tag of $950 per square foot. The company will begin accepting applications for the space on Sept. 1.

Cedric The Entertainer is coming to Broadway. Cedric will be one of the stars of American Buffalo along with Comedian/Actor John Leguizamo. American Buffalo is about a group of small time hoods who try to steal a rare coin. Cedric the Entertainer, the actor-comedian seen in concerts and on film as one of "The Original Kings of Comedy," is expected to play junk shop owner Don to John Leguizamo's Teach in the new Broadway production of David Mamet's acclaimed American Buffalo this fall. In unrelated news, KMOX contacted Cedric the Entertainer's publicist for a reaction to Bernie Mac's death and got this statement from Cedric via text message: "It's hard to put into words just how I feel and what a painful loss this is. Bernie was a brother, a friend, and one of the comic masters of our time. Sharing the marquee with him during the phenomenon of the Kings of Comedy tour bonded us like family and created a unique moment in comic history, making some of the most meaningful, memorable, and fun times of our lives. His comedic approach was his own brand and will definitely stand the test of time. The level of his talent always inspired me and other comedians to 'bring their A-Game.' I promise you that you never wanted to be the guy who had to follow Bernie's set. As a husband and father, he was THE MAN, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will truly be missed, but so well remembered."

According to stlhiphop.com, there has been some talk on why the STL have been getting a bad rap with the national rap game especially Nelly. Kanecc, CEO of Hood Hop Music (J-Kwon's label)apparently Kanecc rolled up on 100.23 The Beat’s DJ Quinn who dropped a dime on why Nelly and Murphy lee keep gettin pushed back. There is also talk on why Ludy keeps gettin rejected because the labels trying to be slick and drop him and hating on Hakeem and Potzee. Kanecc broke down why folk hatin on Nelly in particular . He believes its because they (record labels) don't want him doing anything too hood. Instead they rather he make songs with Fergie (like the lackluster “Party People”), where they only rap 8 bars a piece thru the song. Wow, this has mod def has to be addressed. It is interesting that no STL artists are hitting the charts these days (A good example is Chingy’s last CD which flopped). The last big hit from the STL camp was Huey’s “Pop, Lock and Drop it” which was last summer. Could there be a bad rap on the STL? What do yawl think? Hit us up at email@example.com and we will post your comments.
The STL Idol winner, Corey Temure of Park Hills, Mo. who had won a spot in the American Idol auditions Aug 8 at Kemper Arena in Kansas city did not advance to Hollywood.
