OUT 509--STL-TIDBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS! THIS IS A THURSDAY EDITION OF STL-TIDBITZ.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS STORY WAS BARACK OBAMA BECOMING THE PRESIDENT ELECT

Obama won 349 electoral votes to Mccain’s 163 electoral votes.

As the world rejoiced over the first black US president, on ELECTION DAY the Democrat leader started on the "Obama Revolution". He called on former Clinton White House aide Rahm Emanuel to be his chief of staff, a vital post that helps set the tempo of the administration. Top intelligence officials gave him highly classified briefings as he prepared battle plans for the daunting problems he will face. Hours after Senator Obama claimed victory, Russia threatened to put missiles alongside US ally Poland unless President George W. Bush repealed a US plan for a missile defence shield in Europe. In an immediate reminder of the grave economic crisis he will inherit, Wall St plunged again on fears of a deep recession.

As well as the worries of America and the world, the president-elect also has a personal to-do list before he moves into the White House in January.

It includes finding a school for his daughters in Washington, getting the puppy he promised they could take to the White House, and arranging his grandmother's funeral.

Senator Obama began his first full day as president-elect by having breakfast with his wife and daughters. He left his Chicago home and hit the gym before heading to his campaign office. Asked how much sleep he had on the night of his historic victory, he said: "Not as much as I'd like."

Senator Obama and his incoming vice-president, Senator Joe Biden, must work quickly to douse the economic blaze while winding down the war in Iraq and renewing the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He is promising to renew bruised ties with US allies, and to engage some of the nation's fiercest foes such as Iran and North Korea.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama received at least 349 electoral votes.

Republican John McCain has claimed 163 electoral votes.
A total of 270 electoral college votes out of 538 is needed to win the election.

On an interesting note, of all the states that were able to be called on the day of the elections, Missouri was still left counting (Total Votes 2,869,880, MISSOURI (11 electoral votes).
But two days after the election, the following are the Results for
President:
John McCain, Sarah Palin REP 1,442,613 49.4%
Barack Obama, Joe Biden DEM 1,436,745 49.2%
Bob Barr, Wayne A. Root LIB 11,355 .4%
Chuck Baldwin, Darrell Castle CST 8,181 .3%
Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez IND 17,769 .6%
Cynthia McKinney, Rosa Clemente WI 958 .0%

Republican John McCain's 5,868-vote edge in Missouri over Democrat Barack Obama and the state's 104-year record as the nation's best presidential bellwether both hinge on 7,085 votes in the state that have yet to be counted. All are "provisional ballots" cast by people whose status as registered voters could not be verified when they showed up at the polls Tuesday.St. Louis County election officials estimate that about 3,000 of those ballots were cast in county polling places. Another 750 came from the city of St. Louis. About 800-plus were cast in the Kansas City area, and the rest are sprinkled from around the state. All sides agree that the geography implies that most of the provisional ballots included votes for Obama.
Election officials have two weeks to check out the ballots and decide which ones should count.
Also,in Missouri, officials reported record turnouts. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's office reported Wednesday that a record 2.9 million ballots were cast in Tuesday's general election. And while the 69.4 percent of eligible voters casting ballots fell short of the state's projections of 76 percent, it exceeded what some party officials had anticipated..

There were long lines at polling stations, and some voters grumbled about the state's lack of early voting - a move many other states have adopted.

Meanwhile prior to election day, the campaigning in Missouri were full swing in the state that was supposed to be the DECIDER.

Democratic Vice president Joe Biden rallied in Kansas City, NY Senator and former Democratic Presidential candidate Hilary Clinton rallied in St. Charles,Mo and Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin rallied in Jeff City.

As far as the big propositions in Missouri were Proposition A (Casinos and Gambling) that passed that gave gambling boats more revenue to put into education and Prop M (Metro tax hike) failing to pass in St. Louis County that would have generated $80 million annually for Metro operations and expansion but now will cut Metro transportation..
In Illinois, where the voter turnout was light because early voting was accepted, the main issue on the ballot was having a Constitutional convention to amend the constitution will did not pass.
The main Illinois contestants won I which were DICK DURBIN for the United States Senate , JERRY COSTELLO for Congress RICK STONE for Coroner, BRENDAN KELLY for Circuit Clerk, CHARLOTTE MOORE for Board of Review and MIKE COSTELLO for Recorder of Deeds

In other related political news, Senator Dick Durbin daughter died last week. Christine Durbin died in a Washington, D.C.-area hospital from complications relating to a congenital heart condition. Christine Durbin worked for 16 years for the Department of Agriculture in the emerging markets division. She lived with her husband and son in a suburb of the capital. She was 40.

And one of the newest Missouri representatives won on Election Day Tishaura Jones, daughter of former ST. Louis Comptroller Virvus Jones, won in the 63rd district. (SEE EVENT –BITZ for HER CELEBRATION)

Locally, before the elections, the local community organization A Call to Onneness had a Get Out to Vote" Rally at Kiener plaza in downtown St. Louis . The event which brought out about 10,000 attendees helped to galvanize and energize St. Louisans to actively participate in the voting process. On Election Day, a local organization hopes to mobilize 10,000 volunteers go door to door to remind and help people to vote. The organization is made up of 135 groups, is non-partisan and does not endorse any candidates. Their goal is just to get people to vote. (To SEE PICS GO TO OUT 507)

AND THIS JUST END: Rep. Roy Blunt announced Thursday that he would relinquish his post as Chief Republican Whip, the House GOP’s No. 2 leadership spot, in the wake of Tuesday’s stinging Republican losses. Blunt’s decision to step aside after ten years avoids a bitter leadership showdown; the Missouri Republican’s move comes one day after his deputy, Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., announced that he would run for the whip job.

Blunt is the second casualty in a leadership shake-up after the GOP’s Election Day losses, which saw Democrats gain at least 18 seats in the House.

In non-politcal newz: The big story was STL native baseball player Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies who won the World Series last Wednesday. The Philadelphia Phillies of the National League won the best-of-seven World Series against the American League's Tampa Bay Rays, four games to one.To do it, the Phillies prevailed in the first suspended game in World Series history. For the home fans it was surely worth the wait. With terrible rain and wind, Game 5 had been stopped in the middle of the sixth inning, Monday night, with the Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays tied at 2-all.Ryan Howard began a team-wide pileup. Pandemonium swept across the field, into the dugout and into the stands, where the crowd was having their own frenzied title celebration. Following the presentation of the World Series championship trophy, Howard grabbed a "2008 World Champion" flag and along with a few teammates ran around the entire field, allowing the fans a closeup view. As Howard ran, the crowd sang. Queen's "We are the Champions" blared on the loudspeaker, and virtually every fan joined in to create one deafening version of the classic hit.Howard, fresh off his lap around the warning track and wearing his signature grin, grabbed a few bottles of champagne and ran into the middle of the party."Now, it's time to enjoy myself," Howard said. "And celebrate."
Phillies receive trophyWatch.
Locally, we are sure the STL will have some kind of party for Howard, we are willing to bet our vote on Obama that the plans are in the works for it.

The Steve Fawcett plane wreckage was found 9,500 feet up a mountain peak ouside Mammoth Lakes, California, last week, strewn across an area several hundred yards long with a huge burn spot where the plane made impact. On Thursday, Madera County Sheriff John Anderson confirmed that wreckage found in the Mammoth Lakes Area is that of Fawcett’s missing single-engine Bellanca plane. Fawcett disappeared last September after flying an experimental plane. A judge declared him legally dead in February. Anderson says the aircraft appeared to have crashed head-on into the side of a mountain. Most of the fuselage disintegrated on impact, and the engine was found several hundred feet away. Earlier in the week a hiker found pilot ID cards with Fawcett’s name and $1,005 in cash.
While the plane’s wreckage was found, no human remains have been found. About 50 searchers, along with five K-9 teams are expected to continue searching the area.

A suspect in the weekend slaying of St. Louis-area police Sgt. Michael King was arrested in the Kansas City area Tuesday afternoon, the day of the officer’s funeral.
Around 2 p.m., Missouri Highway Patrol troopers arrested someone whose vehicle matched the description of the one driven by the shooting suspect, 41-year-old Todd Shepard of Berkeley, Mo.
The patrol was waiting on University City police to confirm the suspect’s identity before releasing his name, Highway Patrol dispatchers said.
King, 50, was a 25-year veteran of the University City Police Department. He was shot to death in his patrol car on Halloween night.
At his funeral Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in University City, King was remembered as devoted and committed to protecting those he served.

On Wednesday, a St. Louis firefighter who thought he was helping a motorist after a wreck Wednesday evening instead found himself confronted by an armed carjacker who shot the firefighter and left him dying in the street.Minutes later and a few blocks away at the northern tip of St. Louis on Riverview Drive, the carjacker fired at St. Louis County officers, who shot back and killed the man, ending a carjacking spree that authorities called "chaotic" and pieced together based on witness accounts. The firefighter, Leonard Riggins, died later at a hospital from a gunshot wound to the chest. Riggins, 52, was a 14-year veteran of the St. Louis Fire Department and left behind a wife and two sons.Authorities were still trying to reconstruct the chain of events Wednesday night but said it appeared the man who killed the firefighter carjacked or attempted to carjack four cars within a span of minutes. They did not release any information on the carjacker late Wednesday and didn't have a motive for his crimes.

The St. Louis Area Major Case Squad was called to the scene of a murder at a rug store in Brentwood. A body was found in the Rug World store in the 2300 block of South Brentwood Boulevard, authorities said. The Major Case Squad was later called in to help with the case. Investigators are at the store and authorities have not released further information. Police have identified the victim, but will not release his name until they notify his family.

Steven Jackson practiced for the second straight day on Thursday and was optimistic he'd be back in the St. Louis Rams' lineup after missing a game with a thigh injury.
Jackson said he would have been no better than 50% efficiency last week at New England, when the thigh tightened during a pregame workout. He said the situation has improved every day this week.
"It's not 100%, but it's not something that's unbearable like Sunday where I wouldn't be able to be myself out there," Jackson said to USA Today. "So we felt taking a week off would probably be the best thing for the rest of the season."
Coach Jim Haslett repeated his assessment from a day earlier, saying Jackson, defensive tackle
Adam Carriker (sprained ankle) and defensive end Leonard Little (hamstring) all would be "50-50 game-time decisions."
He also said he'll go with untested backups until Jackson proves himself on the field.

Another business chain is set to close some of its doors.
Circuit City Stores Inc. said Monday it will unplug 155 of its stores, including one in St. Louis County.
Following a widened loss in the second quarter and shares losing 95 percent of their value in the past year, the Richmond, Va.-based electronics retailer will lay off thousands of employees and close 20 percent of its 700 U.S. stores by year’s end.
The local store that is closing is located at 3344 Pershall Road in Ferguson. Two others in Kansas City, Mo., and a fourth in Independence will also be shuttered.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Reports say diabetes is on the rise in Missouri, but many people with the disease don't know they have it. Educating people about the disease is the goal of National Diabetes Awareness Month, observed annually in November.
o Nearly 415,000 adults in Missouri – nine percent of the population aged 18 or older – have been diagnosed with diabetes. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, about one quarter of all people with the disease are unaware of their condition. That means thousands of Missourians of all ages are not protecting themselves from the dangers of diabetes. For more info go to the American Diabates association at http://www.diabetes.org/

Actor/dancer Darrin Henson was in the St. Louis area last Thursday and Friday to look at the theatrical work of EasT St. Louis director/actor Joel King’s play, “Real Life” at King’s spot, the Venue on Vandeventer. Henson attended the stage reading because of his interest of executive producing King’s production. And from what King and others have told OUTTOWN, after a few tweaks have been done to the play , it looks like King’s play could be set on national stage with Henson's help in the very near future. Congrats Joel!

Grammy Award winning rapper Nelly had a busy week as well. On Nov. 2, he celebrated his 34th b-day. To celebrate, Ford Flex hosted a party for the hit rapper at the Palazzo in Las Vegas. (his boo Ashanti wasn’t in attendance due to a concert date in Japan) Here he's pictured with Lunatic City Spud, his protege, Avery Storm, and Lunatics kyjuan and Murphy Lee (Oh and the car you see was his cake!). At his party, he confirmed his relationship with singer Ashanti.

According to a recent issue of People Magazine, the St. Louis rapper, who has been dating Ashanti for four years, admitted he "likes having fun" and "hanging out" with her.
"That's the thing between me and her, we just like having fun," People quoted Nelly, as saying.
On being asked if the romance is serious, Nelly said, "I think it's always serious when you can hang with a person continuously... and have fun."
Earlier, Ashanti had called Nelly a "good friend." But, she did say that an engagement could "definitely in the future."

Is it us, or is it kind of old hat now about “Ashanelly?”

Ford Flex also threw Nellys party in celebration of their making his own custom made 2009 Ford flex that was unveiled Election Day at the Specialty Equipment Market Association( SEMA) Show in Vegas. .

And lastly, after Election Day, there was a white female who called up on the MJ Morning Show who was from St. Louis who said that now that Obama is in office, could she now complain about things because she was white. Her reasoning was black folk always complain that they don’t get things because they were black. Now that Obama is in office, she feels he will change polices that will affect white people. Of course MJ thought her comments were absurd and asked her does she discriminate against people she help/ And she said NO, but she found it sick that black folks use their race to get what they want. She also said she was tired of blacks using their race when they can’t pass paramedic tests. Did anyone hear this craziness on the show? Is this what this country must endure within the next four years? This is sad commentary for real. Oh we are sure she was an McCain supporter.

HELP BITZ.We got an email from actress Shawn Guy Pitts on ger new job and she is seeking help: Greetings! Just this past week, I received my official certificate as a certified trained S.A.R.T. Advocate through the YWCA.S.A.R.T. stands for Sexual Assault Response Team.As an advocate, I will be on-call to respond to victims of sexual assault and rape that present to the emergency room and provide them with support, empowerment, and resources. Some of you were lovely to attend my one-woman show put on in July 2007 that was about sexual abuse. At the end of the show, I encouraged all attendees that if they knew anyone who may have been or is a victim to go to the YWCA Sexual Assault Center.Well this year, I would like to take it a step further. As with any non-profit organization, funds are always an issue. This year, the deficit is even greater as well as the number of women who are beginning to report these devastating crimes. We are approaching the holiday season, which for many is a time of giving and sharing. I ask that you PLEASE consider donating money to the Sexual Assault Center.Remember, we love our mothers, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, nieces, wives, girlfriends, and daughters. And guess what? Sexual abuse, assault, and/or rape can happen to ANY of them. Women (and sometimes men) present to the emergency room from all walks of life, economic standing, and backgrounds as victims. The YWCA Sexual Assault Center provides counseling, clothing, advocacy, resources, etc. to victims. Your donations will help to make this awesome refuge bigger and better. If you decide to donate before November 1st, you must send your donations to the United Way (where they divide the money up). If you donate AFTER November 1st, you can send your donations DIRECTLY to the Center at 140 N Brentwood, Clayton, MO 63105. ....................................Nar Js Music Evangelist Nakisha Joseph, 7740 Dale Ave. 314.313.2288............................Teddy Blackett needs help with sponsors for his website.
