OUT 539-STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS WEDNESDAY. WELCOME TO THE ERA OF OBAMA!

We couldn’t start off this blog week without mentioning that we have a new Prez in office, former Chicago Senator Barack Obama, who was sworn in as the 44th Prez of the United States in Washington DC where he will be residing at the White House along with his Chicago bred fam. Obama is mos def a Political Rock Star!

An uncanny flashback, in July 2007, when the National Urban League’s Conference came through the STL at the Americas Center (ABOVE), all of the Democratic candidates came to speak about their gals and plans if elected President (at the time Senator Hilary Clinton was the frontrunner). Well, at the Q and A panel with the four top candidates in attendance (Clinton, Obama, Dennis Kucinich and John Edwards that can be seen at OUT 229_), Pres. Obama was one of the candidates and before he spoke, the highlight was when the moderator NUL CEO Marc Morial asked Obama hypothetically, if he was elected in Jan. 09 what would be his actions and Obama raised his hand as though he was under oath and Morial was swearing him in! (Photo by Lois Ingrum photolov@sbcglobal.net ) Talk about mindblowingly foreshadowing!

Also, when Obama came though St. Louis in February 2008 at the Edward Jones Dome where hundreds of thousands attended, YOURS TRULY, who was standing where the media was on a platform dais said to fellow colleagues, photographer Erica Brooke, “He’s going to be President.” Well…what can be said after that!!!

Speaking of Erica Brooks, she texted YOURS TRULY and said that she was in the midst of the Inauguration festivities . We hope she can give us some pics so that we can share with our OUTTOWNERS. From reports there were many ST. Louis area politicians that were in DC for the festivities and after parties. ST. Louis Post Columnist Deb Peterson reported in her column

Many A-listers from the Lou attended the Impact Film Fund party, which was the hottest late-night bash to be at last Sunday. Two-thousand 2,000 attended and was hosted by STL rapper Nelly and DJed by the Father of STL hip_hop, Charlie Chan. The party, co-produced by Synergy, also had in attendance lawyer Scott Rosenblum, Jeanne and Jay Roberts, Mike Roberts Jr., and KMOV personality Vickie Newton to name a few. Performers included Ludacris and DMC of RUN DMC. Other celebs who stopped by were Oscar winning director Ron Howard, actress Jessica Alba, journalist Maria Shriver, Grammy winning pop group Maroon 5, comedian Sarah Silverman, actress Gabrielle Union, and actor Ricky Schroeder.

But errthing wasn’t so festive though. According to the NY Post, Nelly—along with Chicago native rapper Common—was a no show to perform at a DC party in honor of Grammy winning superstar Mary J Blige at the Ibiza Nightclub (Blige reportedly showed up three hours late). The party was reportedly “ packed with people waiting in vain for the performances," a spy said. People reportedly paid up to $150 a pop to see the three.

Also, several of the unofficial Balls promoted in DC slashed their ticket prices. Tickets slashed $100 -- to $250 according to reports. One of the balls, the Urban ball, was co-hosted by ST. Louis comedian/actor Cedric The Entertainer along with Ludcris and Fantasia. The reason for the price slashes was reportedly not enough demand for high-price unofficial celebrations with no drop-bys from the Obamas.

Locally, more than 500 people packed an auditorium at the Saint Louis Science Center on Tuesday to watch President Barack Obama’s inauguration on an Omnimax screen, prompting staff to open an overflow room. One of the reps at the Center said that “people were reacting to the screen with ‘Amen’ and ‘Oh yeahs,’ and people were crying and applauding,” Many of the attendees, who watched the historic swearing-in for free courtesy of the science center, then stayed to visit exhibits at the center and bought tickets for the current “A T. rex Named Sue” exhibit”

YOURS TRULY attended the City Hall ball that was sponsored by St. Louis African American Caucus Foundation and the Young Democrats of St. Louis.( STAY TUNED THIS WEEK FOR THOSE PICS. WE WILL GIVE YOU THE EMAIL UPDATE WHEN THEY ARE POSTED ) YOURS TRULY was also feature don the live telecast of the event on STL-TV intereviewed by Best of the STL co-host Gilberto Pinella.

Speaking of the Science Center, and alluded to earlier, it is currently exhibiting the popular AT rex named Sue, a traveling exhibit that showcases the most compete Tyrannosaurus rex remains ever discovered and 66 million years old. The exhibitis in the center's Exploradome. It will continue on display through April 12. Nearly 3 million people have seen the gargantuan specimen during the tour, which has drawn more than 4,000 visitors a day at some museums. Its St. Louis visit will be its final stop in the United States before it embarks on an indefinite international tour.

The ST. Louis Rams organization has chosen its new coach for the 2009 season, Steve Spagnuolo who comes to St. Louis after two seasons as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, turned down a head-coaching offer from the Redskins last year at this time. During his off season, he interviewed with Denver and the New York Jets. Spagnuolo plans to meet with each holdover member of the Rams' staff — those still under contract and those whose contracts expire Feb. 15. He met with all Rams Park employees last week before his introductory news conference. Well lets see if he can turn around the Rams who only won five out of 32 games over the past two seasons.

Two of Missouri’s musical talents performed at the Midwestern Inaugural Ball on Tuesday. Local favorites Fabulous Motown Revue (RIGHT) along with Kennett native Sheryl Crow (ABOVE) performed at the 2009 Presidential Inaugural celebration for Barack Obama. The invitation-only ball was at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The Midwestern Inaugural Ball was one of ten official Inaugural Balls hosted by the Presidential Inaugural Committee. The states making up the Midwest region were Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Fabulous Motown Revue’s bandleader Steve Schankman has had the opportunity to perform for several presidents including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and it was the first time he’s performed at a presidential inauguration. The Revue also performed at the historic Obama rally Oct. 18 at the Gateway Arch. Crow helped rock the Midwestern Ball, where partiers waited late into the night for the presidential party to arrive. Earlier, before launching into “A Change Will Do You Good,” Crow said, “Happy Obama, everybody!” Missourians and Kansans partied. Among the attendees was Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, who got a big shout-out from Crow from the stage. Crow also performed before thousands who witnessed the pre-inaugural concert “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial” held in Washington, D.C.

The nation's digital television conversion is just over a month away, but two local stations will begin making changes this past Monday. As a result, some viewers of KMOV (Channel 4) and KNLC (Channel 24) may have trouble finding the two stations, which have decided to get a head start on the nationwide digital transition, which is set to take place on Feb. 17. At 12:01 a.m. on Monday, KNLC ceased broadcasting its analog signal and went all-digital. At the same time, KMOV moved its digital signal into the frequency previously used by KNLC's analog broadcast. The station's analog Channel 4 will be unaffected for now. So, if you get it through cable, satellite or a service such as AT&T U-verse, the change should go unnoticed. But if you get your TV signal the old-fashioned way — through an antenna — you may need to make some adjustments.KMOV's digital signal is moving to a new frequency during the digital transition. And that creates a unique challenge for the CBS affiliate and any customer who gets their digital signal over the airwaves.

We aren’t for sure if Ashanelly is preggo, but reports are confirmed that “Djimora” is. St. Louis native model/mogul Kimora Lee Simmons of Style Network's "Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane" and Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou are expecting their first child, reports E! The former model has two children with ex-hubby hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons. The two have been dating since February 2007. She told Harper’s Bazaar via
UsWeekly that she has a lot of trust issues with men, and after she and Russell split she was understandably frosty toward dating. Perhaps the most surprising part of this news story is what Dijmon was quoted as saying about dating the notorious diva: My first impression has always been the same, that she’s a very beautiful lady, very capable and intelligent and smart with great family values. She’s the least high-maintenance lady I’ve ever dated.”

Huh? Come on now, not high maintenance. How could she not be? If she can literally snap her finger and make money. And watchin “Life In The Fab Lane…”well, the title alone is case in point!

Clear Channel hip-hop station the Beat (100.3 FM) is celebrating 10 years on the air. To celebrate, the station will hold a Beat Borthday Concert “Swagger Tour” (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW) Part ONE, featuring T.I., Ludacris, and the Beat's very own Shorty Da Kid! We are sure fellow beat personalities such as Hypeman Dwight Stone, Freeman Bosley Jr., Kiki the 1st Lady and Mischelae will be on board on stage as well. Hmm, wonder what part 2 will consist of?

The struggling Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation has shelved plans for a $300-a-ticket benefit after reports of financial irregularities at the Olympic gold medalist's charitable group. According to reports. The 2nd Annual Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation Gala had been scheduled for Feb. 28 at the Four Seasons Hotel downtown, with veteran sportscaster Bob Costas as host. The foundation, which owns the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in East St. Louis, decided last Friday to put off the event.

In a statement, Costas said of Joyner-Kersee: "I believe her heart has always been in the right place with (the foundation), but under the circumstances, they have done the right thing by postponing the event until the issues raised have been resolved."The arts, sports and crafts center for the youth opened in 2000 in East St. Louis. Last week, the Belleville News-Democrat reported that the foundation had paid several hundred thousand dollars over four years to a foundation established by Robert Kersee, the husband of Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

Wash U professor Dr. Gerald Early has become series editor of the new annual anthologies ""Best African American Fiction: 2009" and "Best African American Essays: 2009." The Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters and director of the Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences, edited the volumes which are the first in the "Best of…" series to exclusively showcase African-American writing. The essay volume includes a piece by Obama titled "One Nation…Under God?" on the health care crisis in America. It also includes several pieces written about Obama.
"I think with Obama becoming president there will be an increased interest in all things African-American," Early sai to Washington U’s Newswire. "Since the writing for these books is mainly from 2007, due to publishing lead-time, the pieces included here will shed light on Obama the candidate. But as his presidency unfolds, I have no doubt there will be future essays in this series about Obama and his impact on the nation and the world." The first in what will be an annual collection, Early hopes these volumes "will be important volumes in showcasing African-American writing and writers. We hope to give people who would like to be introduced to African-American writing a place to find some of the best writing that has been produced in the past year." Both books are available in hardback and paperback from Bantam Dell.

Speaking of sports, last week two women from Nortre Dame Academy, were signed up last Friday in the 2009 draft to play in St. Louis’ new soccer team Atheltica for the returning Women’s Professional Soccer League. Saint Louis Athletica selected two-time MAC Hermann Trophy winner Kerri Hanks (RIGHT) and Pembroke native Niki Cross (ABOVE). Hanks, currently a senior at Notre Dame, was the 6th pick overall. During her career at Notre Dame she was a freshman All-American and the Big East Rookie of the Year. Cross was drafted in the fifth round. Cross, a former standout at Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) and the University of Connecticut, most recently returned from a short contract stint with Swedish Damallsvenskan side Umea Sodra. Both are expected to join the Athletica in St. Louis for preseason training beginning March 1st. The St. Louis Athletica is one of seven founding teams that will begin competition in the inaugural season of the WPS this spring. Led by Brazilian Women's National team head coach Jorge Barcellos, the Athletica will open the season on their home turf of Southern Illinois University on April 5th against the Chicago Red Stars before traveling to Boston on April 11th to take on the Boston Breakers for their home opener. The league folded in 2003 after failing to capitalize on a popularity spike following the 1999 World Cup.

Kansas city native Don Cheadle has just signed a two-year, first look TV development deal with Universal Media Studios, a division of NBC Universal. The Academy Award nominated actor also runs Crescendo Productions with producing partners Kay Liberman and Lenore Zerman. Crescendo Productions develops and produces
films geared to both mainstream and the independent film audiences.
Cheadle was reported as saying about the deal, "I look forward to our
partnership with NBC. We have a unique opportunity to make some compelling television and are very excited to get up and running." Cheadle can currently be seen in the children’s movie, Hotel For Dogs.” Cheadle is currently filming the gritty crime drama “Brookyln’s Finest’ with actor Wesley Snipes. The film is directed by “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua.

The financially troubled Renaissance Grand Hotel & Suites in downtown St. Louis is scheduled to be auctioned off at noon Feb. 2 at the Civil Courts Building.A notice of the foreclosure sale, filed last Tuesday, comes after the hotel owners defaulted last month on a $3.5 million interest payment on the hotel’s debt. The default left bondholders to consider how they might get their money back. Six years after it opened as the city’s main convention hotel, the Renaissance Grand is in the hands of the people who lent the $98 million to get it built.Bondholders’ biggest weapon is foreclosure, which would wipe out the interests of current owners Kimberly-Clark Corp. and Historic Restoration Inc.The 1,000-room hotel turns an operating profit but does not generate enough money to also pay off its debt. In addition, the hotel is falling behind in stashing away money to pay for new furniture and fixtures as they need replacing.Bond trustee UMB Bank has hired a consultant to explore ways to improve the hotel’s results.

According to reports, Panera Bread Co., the chain of 1,250 bakery-cafes, plans to take advantage of its debt-free balance sheet and the U.S. real estate slump to open as many as two locations a week in 2009.. The company, based in Richmond Heights, will open 70 to 90 stores this year. The stores operate under the St. Louis Bread Co. name in the St. Louis area.

Have yawl been seein the local commercial for the business Mo Money Taxes? Talk about Coonin with a Capital C! But what makes it even worse is, they have this hefty white man playin; a loud mamma (Picture comedian Artie Lang when he did those infamous That’s My White Mama skits on MADTV back in 2000). The main character screams to the tax office to get her taxes done, throwin stuff off desks and bendin over to show her anger. This commercial is beyond ridiculous. Now mind, you, we love us some silly local commercial (Becky’s Carpet, Buckey, and those Schweig Engel commercials back ion the day), but to have a white man playin a sassy and loud fat black woman was beyond insulting! We were surprised they didn’t paint the man’s face black to make it more “real.”

Skybox bartender Gabrielle Harris won the cup at the inaugural Jack Daniels Whiskey Cup in a competition put on by the St. Louis promoters for Jack Daniels held at the Sheldon last Sunday (SEE OUT 538 FOR PICS ) the competition comprised of seven other STL based bartenders at various STL bars who prepared their signature Jack Daniel's and Gentleman Jack drinks for a panel of judges and the title of Jack Daniel's Whiskey Cup Champion. The barhops came from the Loft, Cuetopia, Studio Blu, Olive Bistro, St. Lousi Happy Hour , and Cathy’s Cozy Up (who won People’s Choice).

And speaking of competitions, next month, promotional group Liquid Assets is conducting a people’s choice Award competition entitled Notice Me Awards where STL personalities are chosen by and voted on by their peers in various categories. Multiple nominees include Mocha Latte (Video Female Appearance for “Comin’ For Ya" Jus Bleezy and Miss My Space), body art artist Jessica Dana ( (Body Paint Artist of the Year and Makeup Artist of the Year), Promoter MPAC (Model Competition of the Year and Model group of the Year) (model Lady Star (Hardest Working female Model and Promotions Model) , and model Shanelle Howard (Picture Perfect and Model of the Year Female). Other categories include King of Swag, Mens and Womens Clothing Line. Another interesting category is Event Photographer where the competitors are : Arthur Smith Xpressions 2 Art; Bill BeeneThe St. Louis American; Jacob StLouis Online; Jason BaileyThe Whirl; Kevin Jordan STL On Fire; and King YellaThe Whirl. Stiff competition to say the least (Ma’atology wasn’t nodded but its all good. LOL) cuz all of these guys are always on the scene with their bulb machines (Well, Jacob kinda slipped off into cam seclusion). (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW FOR MORE INFO)

Lure Nightclub was not alluring last Sunday. We rolled up to Precision’s event at Lure on Washngton and Tucker, that was a celebration of Obama’s Inauguration and as the saying goes, you could fit two elephants up in there. We wondered what happened? We were sure we had the right venue according to the Facebook and email blast, but we were correct in where we were. After an hour, the people who were there, were leaving with a quickness. Soon after, its host Rob Kirk came inside talkin on a celly to see who was in therre and summoned SYGU’s Darryl Gillespie who was there. For a moment, Gillespie returned, but Kirk did not. Come to find out, err body was told to go to Ten14 to join STL365’s Jason McNairy who had a party himself passing out free movie passes and other miscellaneous items. So our question is, What happened Mr. Kirk?

The award-winning Beatles concert, RAIN – A Tribute To The Beatles, returns to the Fox Theatre for two fabulous performances February 4 & 5. In a show the Denver Post calls “the next best thing to seeing The Beatles,” RAIN boasts a repertoire of nearly 200 Beatlemaniac favorites, ranging from such beloved songs as “Yesterday” and “Hey Jude” to classic hits including “Revolution” and “Come Together.” RAIN covers the Fab Four from their very first Ed Sullivan Show appearance through the Abbey Road album, through the psychedelic late 60s and their long-haired hippie, hard-rocking rooftop days. RAIN is a multi-media, multi-dimensional experience...a fusion of historical footage and hilarious television commercials from the 1960s lights up video screens and live cameras zoom in for close-ups.
