OUT- 548-STL--TIDBITZ AND MORE!

WASSUP OUTOWNERS!

ITS WEDNESDAY

COME CHECK OUT WHATS HAPPENING IN THE MO AND THE IL THIS WEEK!

But before we get into the thick, this week begins Black History Month. To recognize the month, each Wednesday, we will highlight black artists and entertainers who were born in the bi-region (more the STL area) who made significant strides in their fields.

This week, we recognize Charles Edward Anderson "Chuck" Berry. Born October 18, 1926 in St. Louis is an influential figure and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's website, "While no individual can be said to have invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry comes the closest of any single figure to being the one who put all the essential pieces together."[1] Cub Koda wrote, "Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers."[2] John Lennon was more succinct: "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."[3]

Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986. He received Kennedy Center Honors in 2000 in a "class" with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Angela Lansbury, and Clint Eastwood. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Chuck Berry #5[4] on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[5] He was also ranked 6th on Rolling Stone's Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists of All Time.[6]
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included three of Chuck Berry's songs ("Johnny B. Goode", "Maybellene", "Rock and Roll Music"), of the 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll.[7]

(AND SEE BELOW WHAT BERRY IS UP TO IN 2009)

AND NOW TO THE NEWZ:

Well, we are guessing that all of the Arizona Cards fans in St. Louis have picked up their fallen feathers from the grid iron after the Cards lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Big Game this past Sunday in Tampa. But the question now is whether former St. Louis Rams quarterback and ongoing city golden boy Kurt Warner will remain on the Cards now that he is a free agent. Warner was reported as saying he needs a few weeks before deciding whether to play football for another season.Team officials informed Warner that he's wanted back and he promises to talk to them again before any decision is made. Warner also reportedly said he'd like to "finish his career in Arizona," a strong sign that he wants to keep playing. Well, we will see.
.
And speaking of the STL connection at the Big Game, Nelly and the St. Lunatics performed at the Coors Light Super Bowl Party last Friday (NELLY PICTURED AT COORS) , local house builders McBride & Son Homes had a first with its zany commercial to air during the Super Bowl (It aired right before right before kick off) and was featured in three station IDs during the game. McBride & Son is not saying how much the campaign is costing the company. And all of the Denny’s in the STL area were as packed as a stuffed cavity when folks from the ying yang came out to Denny’s Tuesday for a free breakfast. During the Super Bowl, Denny’s had a commercial that ran saying people could free breakfast on that day. Man, talk about cleaning out the buffet!

In unrelated Nelly news, Nelly and rapper Bow Wow got some staged up beef going on who is the best in b-ball. This week, Nelly challenged the ATL star as well as his producer So So Def exec Jermaine Dupri on the b-ball court and get a team together. Bow Wow with So So Def and Nelly with Derrty ENT. Nelly wants to make it a tour across the country. To peep out this challenge go to http://www.collegeotr.com/college_otr/the_economy_hasnt_affected_nelly_or_lil_bow_wow_18584
Chitown’s sweetheart, Grammy Award nominated Jennifer Hudson is set to follow up her triumphant return to public life with a six-week tour. The singer/actress got some slack from the media for lip synching her recent performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Sunday’s Super Bowl performance since the murders of her mother, brother and nephew in October, but she will get a second shot to get the media back in her corner when she performs live at the Grammys this Sunday (and hopefully win at least one of her four Grammy nominations). .

This week, Rock pioneer
Chuck Berry, was sued by a booking agent for at least $123,000 over canceled shows and extra travel expenses on his European tour last July. Berry reportedly refused to give back $93,000 he was prepaid for three shows he canceled, said plaintiff Cheyenne Productions SA in federal court in St. Louis. Cheyenne incurred $30,000 in extra travel expenses, including canceled flights and reimbursed promoters for the shows. In the suit, Cheyenne originally paid Berry $363,000 for 12 shows. Before the tour began, he canceled the one in Toulouse, France. After playing Maryport, England, on July 25, he returned to the United States instead of flying to Spain to play in Estepona and Carracedelo as scheduled, according to the complaint. Cheyenne also hasn’t been paid for 11 shows it booked for a November tour. If you remembered, in July, berry’s excuse for cancelling was reported as his because he was ill. "There were rumors that he's not been feeling well during his current tour, and suffered pain on stage at a concert. As of this blogging, there was no ruling.

Now, getting back to the STL connection with the Superbowl. On the USA Network show, “Monk” its star Tony Shaloub suited up in the episode "Mr. Monk Makes the Playoffs," as the obsessive-compulsive detective scored tickets to the biggest football game of the year, but he and Captain Stottlemeyer can't go inside until they figure out who tried to blow up a fan in the parking lot. STL native/NBC sportscaster and
Super Bowl host Bob Costas guest starred. In unrelated Costas news, the Emmy winning vet sports announcer is going to work for Major League Baseball — by joining the MLB Network — and is leaving HBO. He has signed a multi-year contract to join the upstart MLB Network though he will remain at NBC Sports. The MLB network debuted on Jan. 1. Costas will host original programming on the channel and will serve as play-by-play commentator for a select group of regular season games broadcast by the network, which is owned by the league.

Congrats to hometowner and international opera diva Grace Bumbry (PICTURED)who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts and a Key to the City from St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay (actor Louis Gossett Jr. won both last year) when she visits the Lou this month. Bumbry who lives in Austria will participate in the St. Louis Argus Foundation's celebration of Black History Month. on Feb. 21. Legend awards will also be given to: Ron Himes of the Black Rep; maestro Robert Ray of the St. Louis Symphony In Unison Chorus; Eugene Redmond, poet laureate of East St. Louis; the Bosman Twins, jazz musicians; gospel music promoter Merdean Gales; jazz singer Denise Thimes; gospel singer Zella Jackson Price; and entertainment agent Eric Rhone.

In more STL connections on the SuperBowl, after “Monk” was the drama Psych, where characters Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) were drafted for duty on "Any Given Friday." In the episode, the duo sign up for training camp after the foot of a professional football kicker is discovered. STL native actor Mykelti Williamson (PICTURED) was a special guest star. In related Williamson news, he will be next seen on the big screen in the blaxplotation spoof flick, “Black Dynamite" that has been acquired by Sony Pictures following its scheduled premiere last week at the Sundance Film Festival.

Good luck goes to STL gosel singer Flame who is nominated for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album for his CD Redeemed at this year's Grammy Awards. He will know his fate when the Grammys will be given out this Sunday at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Or is it correct to wish luck to a Christian artist. Hmmm. Oh well.

Award-winning STL painter and artist Daniel Hodges has commemorated a painting for sell in celebration of President Barack Obama’s historic win of the Oval Office. For more info go to
www.danielhodges.com

We wonder who won the abs contest that 100.3 The beat personalities Hypeman Dwight Stone (PICTURED FAR RIGHT) and Lil Shorty (PICTURED RIGHT)had last year? Well, after our search on its website, we are guessing that Shorty won based on his pic posted on the site. LOL. In related news, Shorty will open up the Swagga Tour with headliners Ludacris and T.I. at the Chafeitz Arena for Part One of the station’s 10 year anniversary *(SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW).

We heard that The Pageant was up for a Nightclub of the Year award in the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards that were held last week at the Nokia Theater in L.A. but lost to DC’s 9:30 Club. Other nominees were Club Nokia (Los Angeles, CA)Commodore Ballroom (Vancouver, BC) and House Of Blues (Dallas, TX). Hmm, interesting that pollsters didn’t pick Club Nokia and the event was held in the same building its housed in. LOL

Speaking of radio personalities, WHHL personality Young Dip will be celebrating his b-day party this Friday called “POLO" AT THE LOFT. He along with Kansas City Chiefs’ Will Franklin will be celebrating their b-day. And its FREE before 11 p.m. (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW) if you wear some Polo….In related news, Dip will co-host along with Mz Prada the Stanky Leg contest that will take place at Spruill’s on North Jefferson. The winner will receive a 1,000 bonez and the group. GS Boyz will be there to perform theri hit dance song(SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW) .

Speaking of b-dayz: hap Aquarian Day to WHHL’s Boogie D, Café Soul’s Angie Brown (who visited the Bahamas for her b-day) Teddy (B. Free) Blackett,
Derrty ENT’s Mousie, photographer Lance Omar Thurman, and hoodstar Mocha Latte.

Three different weekly open mike nights are on the move . First up, is the return of Hi Pointe Café Every Monday (PICTURED ABOVE RIGHT--CLICK PHOTO TO ENLARGE) that used to be held at Hi Pointe Theatre but was closed in 2007 is now back….Starting Feb. 11, The popular Suite Soul Spot has moved to the second Wednesdays at Old Rock House (LEFT--CLICK PHOTO TO ENLARGE)instead of the first Tuesday. It will feature Kenny Deshields, Teresa Payne (who toe it up at Cafe Soul last weekend), Jr and Melody Graves ( … Lastly, the Soundstage has moved to The House of Comedy (SEE ONGOING BITZ) this Wednesday on the Landing from its last spot Culture Café inside Diversity gallery on Delmar. This week is FEATURING TERESA JENEE , K-LOVE (CHI), ROBERT DILLARD & ST. PEACE (INDY)

We all know that the STL has a history in hip-hop long before Nelly and the St. Lunatics made a name for STL rap, but there is one guy who contributed to STL hip-hop who may have been forgotten. Jeweler/stock trade consultant Ernest Collins used to be a rapper/singer/hypeman for R&B group Midnight Star in the early 1990s. And to show that this is true, we found the video of him and Midnight star back in 1991 with their last hit, “DO it One More Time” To peep it go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0-J2QsnYIE and watch the rap break of the song. Now mind you it is the early 1990s so the Gumby was in those days. LOL

Lastly, OUTTOWN would like to give our deepest sympathies to STL comedian STL SLYM (PICTURED)who lost both his parents recently in a two week time period.

IN THE MIA FILE. Where is LME’s Otto Nichols?

BLIND PICZ. Who was this brotha that was kickin’ it at Gramophone last month?

BLIND BITZ. Which mover and shaker smuggled in a bottle of Jack Daniels in her purse recently into a venue? (Hint. The mover and shaker is a female, of course, popular on the stage and has a trademark “colorful" style and the venue’s name is part of a style of music.

STL-ICIOUS (Who’s hot this week ?) Rapper Tiffany Foxx and poet Xplicit.

Tiffany Foxx. This sexy rapper turned video girl is hot on the scenes these days. Currently she can be seen in the music video for the hit song, “Put it On Ya” by Plies. Foxx, who has been on music videos by rapper s CamRon, Master P and Nelly’s signature “Country Grammar, ” is nominated for Liquid Assets’ Notice Me Awards--that will be this Sunday (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW) for Female in A Music Video for Plies’ video. To peep it out go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSU27r6HZ60

Xplicit. This poet is blazing the scenes as one of the young open mike poets in St. Louis. In December, he along with his poet in crime Corey Black did two open mike back to back at Café Soul and Splash of Red Party at Speakeasy. Also at that time, this SIUE grad student co-created Soundstage, a weekly open mike for poets and singers at Cultural Café (now moved to House of Comedy). In October, he released his debut CD "Realize & Relax" which is stirring up a buzz in the poetry community. To peep his interview go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HbnHKM9eB8

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ.

I was reflecting in my head on some political songs and thought of boho singer Tracy Chapman’s and her song, ”Why” off her remarkable debut namesake album in 1988. One of the lyrics of that song said, “Why are missles called peacekeepers when they are aimed to kill? Hmmm. Why?

The Black Rep presents A Song for Coretta
By Pearl Cleage

On a cold, rainy day in February, five women stand in line with 14,000 other mourners, each waiting her opportunity to pay final respects to the one and only Coretta Scott King. These total strangers, born four decades apart, exchange story after story – memorably paying homage to Coretta while drawing poignant parallels to Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war. Pearl Cleage melds past to present and fact to fiction in this unforgettably thought provoking production.
"The purpose of my writing, often, is to express the point where racism and sexism meet."
Pearl Cleage is an accomplished playwright, journalist, poet, and novelist. She probes issues of race, sex, and love in a growing body of literary work while she reveals poignant truths about brave black women. She has drawn national attention with her dramatic works, which include Flyin' West, and Blues for an Alabama Sky. Her first novel What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, was an Oprah's Book Club selection, a New York Times bestseller, and a BCALA Literary Award winner. She is also the author of I Wish I Had a Red Dress, Mad at Miles, and Deals with the Devil. A contributing editor to Essence magazine, Pearl Cleag Erik Kilpatrick returns to The Black Rep making his directing debut on the Grandel stage. Mr. Kilpatrick has enjoyed success on stage, in television and film e frequently performs her work on college campuses. HELP BITZ SPOTLIGHT. KMJM personality Tammi Holland sent OUTTOWN an uplifting email from dress collector Tracie Ousley. It reads:There have been a lot of parents that have lost their jobs and have daughters that may not be able to participate in a day that you can never get back, their senior prom. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking," what can I do to make a difference."
