OUT 426--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

Hello OUTTOWNERS

Its Wednesday and its time for one more for yawl and we will try and not make you sick in eagerness like a tomato to the stomach when we do it.

So lets get to it.

The third unsung STL artist we would like to highlight during Black Music Month is Fontella Bass.

The daughter of gospel singer Martha Bass (of the Clara Ward Singers), Bass was exposed to music at an early age, and was singing in her church's choir at six years old. As a teenager, Bass was attracted by more secular music. Throughout high school she began singing R&B songs at local contests and fairs. In 1961, Bass found steady work on the local Leon Claxton Show, playing piano and singing in the chorus. She also began playing piano on blues vocalist Little Milton's records. With the support of Bob Lyons, the manager of St. Louis station KATZ, Bass recorded several songs released through Bobbin Records. She saw no notable success outside her home town.

Two years later, she moved to Chicago after a dispute with Little Milton. She auditioned for Chess Records, who immediately signed her as a recording artist. Her first works with the label were several duets with blues singer Bobby McClure, also a newcomer to the label. Released early in 1965, "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" found immediate success, reaching the top five at R&B radio and peaking at #33 at pop. They followed their early success with "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)" that summer, a song that had mild success, reaching the top 30 at R&B, but barely charting at pop.

After a brief tour, Bass returned to the studio. The result was an original composition with an aggressive bass and drum work by Maurice White, of the future Earth, Wind, & Fire. The song, "Rescue Me," shot up the charts in the fall and winter of 1965. After a month-long run at the top of the R&B charts, the song reached #1 R&B and #4 at the pop charts. She followed with "Recovery," which did moderately well, peaking at #13 at R&B and #37 at pop in early 1966. The same year brought two more R&B hits, "I Can't Rest" (backed with "I Surrender)" and "You'll Never Know." Her only album with Chess Records, The New Look, sold reasonably well, but Bass decided to leave the label after only two years, in 1967.

In 1970 Bass recorded two albums with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, The Art Ensemble of Chicago with Fontella Bass and Les Stances A Sophie. The latter was the soundtrack from the French movie of the same title. Bass' vocals, backed by the powerful, pulsating push of the band has allowed the Theme De YoYo to remain an underground cult classic ever since.] After three years performing in Paris with the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Art Ensemble member, St. Louis native jazz trumpeter, Lester Bowie (whom she married) and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, she returned to St. Louis in 1972 to raise her family.

Even with the success of "Rescue Me" it was years and much litigation before Bass would be credited with her part in the songwriting process and the royalties she actually deserved from the song. Some sources credit the climate for racial discrimination and the treatment of women in the music business for these issues at that point in time.

Again, in 1993 Bass had to enter into litigation against American Express and Ogilvy & Mather for the unauthorized use of the song in a commercial for the credit card giant.(Aretha Franklin was also used to sing the song)

[The next few years found Bass at a number of different labels, but saw no notable successes. After her second album, Free, flopped in 1972, Bass retired from music. She returned occasionally, being featured as a background vocalist on several recordings, including those of her husband, the late St. Louis native Lester Bowie, a jazz trumpeter and member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

In the 1990s she hosted a short-lived Chicago radio talk show, and has released several gospel records on independent labels. Always sharing her musical gift in local churches, she went on to perform internationally and at Carnegie Hall. 1995's Grammy-nominated album "No Ways Tired" and 1999's "Speaking in Tongues" showcase the extraordinary talents of Fontella Bass.

Like many artists of her time, Bass experienced a revival of interest. Her voice can be heard on two tracks on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2002 album Every Day, and another two tracks on their 2007 album Ma Fleur.

She was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame on May 21, 2000 . She is the older sister of R&B singer David Peaston, who was a former Showtime at the Apollo champion.

Bass suffered a stroke in 2005.

OK. Now here are some of the newz:

The Imbev—Anheuser Busch Takeover War is still brewin in the STL with so many turns and stops that we are sure this could become a year long news item. First up, supporters of an effort to keep Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis are organized a rally at Al Hrabosky's Ballpark Saloon. Hrabosky spoke to the crowd and whipped up crowd enthusiasm. Then they marched to the Stan Musial statue on the west side of the ballpark. One of the organizers and supporters was Ed Martin, Gov. Matt Blunt's former chief of staff, who started the website http://www.saveab.com/. And speaking of the website, as of this blogging, 30,000 signatures have been posted on it saying NO to Imbev buying out Anheuser Busch. Then it was discovered that Imbev wanted to buy AB for $46 billion, keep the breweries, have ST Louis as the main headquarters for AB and for good measure name the new merger company with Abs heritage in mind. .During the public outcry, privately, AB stock owner Warren Buffett (who owns 5 percent) spoke to AB prez August Busch IV, to discuss the hostile bid. Buffett wanted to remain neutral and negotiate.
Soon after, AB started talks with Mexican beer company Grupo Modelo causing rumors that AB was trying to use Modelo to thwart Imbev;s bouyout (which according to Abs public relations firm was not true). AB accoridnfg to reprts just wanted to explore all of its options before negotiating with Imbev. In a letter that appeared aimed at Anheuser-Busch shareholders, InBev suggested that doing a deal with Modelo could impact the value of its $65-a-share takeover offer.
InBev, whose beers include Stella Artois and Beck's, on Wednesday made an unsolicited bid to buy Anheuser-Busch, which brews the popular Budweiser brand. A deal would create the world's largest brewer. St Louis, Missouri-based Anheuser-Busch responded that its board would evaluate the proposal carefully Anheuser-Busch owns a 50 percent stake in Modelo, maker of Corona beer, which is emerging as a critical power broker in the battle for control of Anheuser-Busch. (Hmmm, so if we are thinking logically here, if AB owns 50 percent of Modelo, if Modelo buys AB, then it would be as though they were not bought if AB already has 50 percent of Modelo. It would be like moving 50 dollars from your checkings account to your savings account, but its still 50 dollars). Next was students at Mizzou threatening to boycott all Imbev products (talk about incentive college kids protesting a college staple—beer?) and they have developed a Facebook petition for folk to sign. Then the political machine got involved. Both Mo. Gov. Matt Blunt abnd STL Mayor Francis Slay opposed the takeover and used their political avenues to try and see if they could stop it. Blunt in particular talked with the Federal Trade Commisssion to inquire if Imbev was violating trade laws with a possible monopoly (The answer was NO). It was rumored that AB wanted state intervention, but that was another rumor that was not true according to its public relations firm.
Then lastly, the newest political intervention came just a day ago when Inbev prez Carlos Brito traveled to Washington Dc and visited Mo. Senator Claire McCaskill to convince her that the Imbev-AB combo would be a match made in heaven. Well in her words she told him, “I amd from the Show Me State so, you are going to have to show me.” HILARRRRRRRRRRRRRRIOUS. Basically, McAskill said Hell to the Naw. She said that she voiced what the city of STL was feeling. Her points were that AB has a 100 plus year history in St. Louis as being a family created independent company (yet the family only owns 4 percent of its voting and executive power!), there’s no proof that jobs wont be cut and Imbev’s past business practices of taking over businesses and cleaning house.
All we can say is bravo to the city of St. Louis for rallying around something that they are passionate about, but on the flipside, if the “city” can rally around more important issues like our children’s education in the St. Louis Public Schools and the controversial firings that occurred in the Mayor’s office with the Fire Chief Sherman George, the playing field would be balanced. The protests from both these events have just as much merit if not more than ballyhooing over STL’s rite to own beer. We just saying.

This week, The Missouri State High School Activities Association stripped Vashon High School of three state basketball championships for placing ineligible players on the court. The action finalizes a 19-month investigation of the Vashon program and its legendary coach Floyd Irons. The school must give up their titles from 2001, 2004 and 2006. Those titles will go to the three runners-up in those years: Liberty, Kearney and Springfield Kickapoo. Vashon must also forfeit five district championships and a 2005 second-place finish. Back in April, Vashon presented the state association with the results of its own internal investigation. At the time, officials said the school would likely lose at least three titles. This spring, St. Louis Public Schools reported that Vashon used at least five ineligible players on championship basketball teams over five years. The names of the five players have not been released publicly by the state association. Irons was removed as coach of Vashon in 2006 after an audit found mismanagement of money in the basketball program.

As of this writing,. Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain was going to be in the STL area to conduct a seminar on energy and national security Wednesday in the student union at Missouri State University.

Mo Sen. Clair McCaskill is getting around this week. Earlier in the week, she and Sens. Christopher "Kit" Bond got a bit beefy with Vice Premier Wang Qishan, a top Chinese economic official, and others for a biz meeting at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton, Qishan held closed-door meetings with Missouri's two U.S. senators while business leaders pitched the region to a roomful of Chinese firms looking to invest in the Midwest. The Chinese are exploring the notion of making St. Louis their Midwestern port of entry to the United States. Well, the two senators got the effort started by vowing to help send beef through Lambert Airport to China (and from reports occurred during talks after a lunch of Midwestern beef) who are experiencing inflation over its economy and products, one being beef. Reports now are if this trade will cause beef in the STL to rise, and of course experts are saying that it should not…..but then again, who thought gas would be 4 dollars a gallon? Okay?.

Lori Drew, the Missouri woman accused of taking part in a MySpace hoax that ended with 13-year-old Megan Meier’s suicide , pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles federal court. She was released on $20,000 bond. As of this writing, Drew’s case has yet to be assigned to a judge and a trial date. However, after both are met, she would then be allowed to return to her home state pending trial. (Drew so far avoided state charges). Drew is accused of one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress. Each of the four counts against Drew carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. It was reported that as soon as Drew returns back home, she and her family are going to move due to the inevitable popularity the case will have and media hounding of her whereabouts.

St. Louis Cards first baseman Albert Pujols will be out three weeks following his calf injury last week. But the big newz in the Cards bullpen was the scary moment involving Yadier Molina in the ninth inning of the Cardinals’ game against Philadelphia last Sunday. Molina was involved in a collision at home with Eric Bruntlett, and suffered a mild concussion. The Cardinals got the out, and
later won 7-6 in 10 innings, but Molina had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. It wasn't clear at the time of the incident whether Molina would end up on the disabled list, but Molina aint having it. Molina lobbied St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa for a quick return to the lineup. Molina was available Tuesday on an emergency basis, but the Cardinals hoped they could make it through their game with Kansas City using only Jason LaRue. Molina caught some warmup pitches during the game. Now that’s what you call determination and dedication to the game.

STL. Sen and Sen. Minority Leader Maida Coleman \ “hot weather rule” legislation was signed into law this week by Acting Governor, Lt. Gov Peter Kinder (Gov. Blunt was on vacation). Prior to the signing, consumer advocates were asking the Missouri Legislature to pass a "hot weather rule" to prevent utilities from turning off power during heat waves. They say lives are at stake: Missouri had 292 heat-related deaths during the past 10 years. Thus, Coleman presented legislation to the Senate Commerce, Energy and the Environment Committee. The bill would bar power companies from disconnecting service to residential customers from June to Sept when either the temperature is expected to rise above 95 degrees or the heat index above 105 degrees for 24 hours. Coleman reportedly said too many people have died: "They were afraid to use their fans or air-conditioning because of the high cost of utilities."

With enrollment for the fall semester already at record levels, the University of Missouri-Columbia has decided to stop taking admissions applications from freshmen. Already 5,860 freshmen have paid the initial enrollment deposit, which would be the largest freshmen class by more than 850 students. Freshmen enrollment in the fall of last year was 5,027. The official enrollment, determined after the 20th day of classes, dropped by 45 to 4,982.University officials set a 7 a.m. Monday deadline for accepting any more applications. The official campus application deadline was May 15, but the school traditionally ignores that deadline and reviews applications until the first day of class in August.

The President Casino is still closed from the flooding. And speaking of flooding, the Mississippi is suppose to crest 10 feet above flood stage on June 21.

If you were planning on taking an Amtrak to Chitown to check out the city’s Taste of Chicago or anything else going on up there, you can forget it. Amtrak is temporarily canceling some trains along its St. Louis-to-Chicago corridor and modifying the schedule of others to accommodate track repairs in central Illinois. Railroad officials say some of the changes will remain in effect through June 24

Speaking of trains, have yawl got your free June 19 boarding pass from Metro during its Dump the Pump program?

Congrats to STL rapper Nelly. He along with his Iron Ring Team MMA World Champion Jermaine Andre’, entertainment guru Rob Evans, Iron Ring Champion Darryl Cobb crushed the comp on BET’s Iron Ring reality show over other celebrity teams such as Team Floyd Maywhether, Team Little John, Team Ludacris, & Team Dipset! They had a party to celebrate the victory at Skybox Monday. In unrelated news, according to gossip reports, Nelly’s lady, Ashanti has denied reports she is engaged to longtime boyfriend Nelly-but is sure they will wed one day. Hmm, any predictions when that day will be? Why do we feel as though it may occur during the street release of his new CD Brass Knuckles in August? Why do we think that? But we could be wrong.

After 14 years on the air as a reporter for KMOV-TV, Kara Kaswell is leaving next week. Kaswell says there were "contract and life issues involved" in her decision to ankle the station. During her time on the air, Kaswell was nominated for six Emmy awards for breaking news and investigative coverage. No word yet on where she's headed. Hmm, contract and life issues. Hmm, that sounds like she already had a offer in the works with more money and more time for her family. But at any rate.....

STL model/mogul Kimora Lee Simmons’ STL episode of her reality show “Kimora Lee Life in the Fab Lane” on the Style network was aired as a part of a marathon last Sunday. In the episode titled, “High School Daze” where she returns to her hometown of St featured many STL stars and landmarks as she received awards and hosts a party to kickoff Alive Magazine’s Fashion Week in March (SEE OUT 352 and 353 for coverage) Those STL stars seen in the episode included Mayor Francis Slay, ALIVE’s Jill Manoff, and SYNERGY’s Amit Dawan (who was in a funny scene with one of Kimora’s assistants over the right saying of “Fabulositini”) and Kimora’s STL relatives including her distant father Vernon Whitlock. They actually had speaking parts in the episode (and we are sure they signed non-union vouchers for payment). Also in the episode were STL City License Collector Mike McMillan, Wash U Professor Jeigh Singleton, Veteran Fashion Designer Susan Block, Anheuser Busch VP Johnny Furr , STL Post Fashion writer Debra Bass, models Renata Walsh and Christiaan Cofield, and YOURS TRULY Ma’at Atkins. They all had nonspeaking or barely in the scene scenes, but they can be seen. Landmarks in the scene were The Arch (of course), Union Station, and Imo’s Pizza in downtown STL. Now what was up with this porno tape Kimora said she directed with a video camera when she was a teen? TMP!

A big budget flick is about to be filmed in the STL and directed by a STL native."Almost Doesn't Count" is slated to begin production in St. Louis, MO in August. The script is helmed by critically acclaimed writer-director Chrys Yvette (A Woman's Worth, Say, Amen!) and produced by Jerrin L. DeLoatch, president of Serenity Arts & Entertainment. The writer-producer duo is currently in pre-production on the film. It is a riveting story centered around a lovesick bride to be whose dreams of the perfect wedding crash come when her fiancé ups and leaves. "Shooting the movie at home will be special," said Yvette to EURWEB.com. Family and friends are financing the project. "After working in Hollywood for the past ten years, to return home to shoot "Almost Doesn't Count" is a dream come true," says Yvette. The movie will be released in the Fall and distributed worldwide by Serenity Arts & Entertainment. Majic 104.9 Tony Scott Show producer Arrika Parr had the radiowaves heated this week after her provocative comments about Barack Obama's Father's Day Speeach at the Apostolic Church in Chi Town. Her comment was that although she supports Obama, she wanted to know why Obama was very negative on the black man and his lack of responsibilities with the family. Her point was he never talks about race and when he does, it was something negative about the black men and not positive. Well, that brought up a lot of interesting conversations from his comments weren't negative to he should not be protected on what he says. Well OUTTOWN wanted to say this: In our opionion, Barack has talked about race when he spoke about his father and mother a few months back in his speech on America. Two, as a black man, and being the first in what he is about to accomplish, you cannot speak too pro-black when youre black in a racially mixed culture as America. You have to be colorblind to a degree so folk can see you as universal. Thats how the game is played. Third, we didnt see his comments as negative but constructive. And he, as well as with Bill Cosby and his criticisms, is an example of the positive aspects of the black man: hard working, family man, provider, and non-criminalized. Thanks Arrika for your comments that has caused a tsunami of conversation in the Lou.

We thought she was in Cali. Maybe she is here visiting. If it was her. Does anyone know? .................................................................We are sure we peeped up in Whole Foods on Brentwood in Clayton and ran into Nubia Café owner Hon. Henry Iwenofu Tuesday evening trying to find some wheat pancakes up in there. Hope you found them cuz all we saw up in that freezer were waffles. LOL.

BLIND BITZ. Part DOS. Last week we gave you more of the same blindness on a mover and shaker who tried to use a fake credit card to pay for drinks at a particular venue, and we were gonna give you part two next week. Well, next week is here. Now, while the credit card processing was going on, this person told this other person that they were quitting the promotions team they are affiliated with. But what is so hilarious, the mover and shaker told the person the WRONG promotions team. It was apparent that the mover and shaker was as drunk and lit as a smoking cigarette. Who is this mover and shaker? (Again the hint is, this person has an E in their first and last name).
