OUT 531--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE

Happy 09 OUTTOWNERS!

Well, we survived X-mas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years and now its back to back to the grind. And with anything with the new year, out goes the old. Starting this week, OUTTOWN will focus ONLY on arts and entertainment stories hitting the St. Louis area. The hard news was getting “hard” for real for us to continue doin every week. So, to keep the blog more entertaining, we added more weekly bitz including more BLIND PICZ (unbeknownst pics of movers and shakers) , STL-ICOUIS (STL hottie guys and gals who are doin their thang on the social swang during the week); and WORDZ to the WHYz (Where we ask a question about something that we do as humans that make you go “why?”). We also will feature more entertainers and shakers with COVER STORIEZ and featurettes and reviews including, food, film, theater, music, and concerts. We still bloggin on Wednesdayz for the new year, but don’t be surprised if we pop up with sumpin on a regular basis, so be checkin out the blog everyday beside the weekly reminders on the e-blast on Wednesdays.

OK. lets get to the TOP A &E bitz of the week.

Are you ready for the digital change? The Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005 mandated that on February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting digitally.
We are sure yawl have heard what yawl need to have or do to be prepared for the change, but for those who haven’t heard, here’s what yawl need to do:

1. Buy a new TV before that date that has a built-in ATSC tuner.
2. Buy a Digital-to-Analog Converter Box (similar to a cable box) that will convert the new digital television signals to an analog signal that can still be accepted by your current television. (NOTE: In both of the above options, you can still use the same antenna you are using now, if it is in good working order, especially if it is an expensive or large outdoor model.)
3. Subscribe to a Cable TV or Satellite TV service.

To test the level of preparedness, and to “wake up” people if they’re not ready, St. Louis stations got together, at the request of the FCC, and agreed to interrupt their analog signals for 5 minutes beginning, Dec. 17. TVs still getting only the analog signal will broadcast a slide warning viewers that they will need a converter box or a new set to keep getting TV as of Feb. 17. People who receive the digital signal will be told that they’re OK on this set, but to run around and check all the sets in the house to make sure none of them is getting the warning slide. If you’re at all uncertain about being ready, make sure to catch the test.

In related news, cable TV operators say they'll voluntarily stop moving analog channels to more expensive digital tiers of service between Dec. 31 and March 1, to avoid confusing customers as the nation switches to digital broadcast transmissions in February.

In letters to Congress, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association said cable TV companies don't want to add a "layer of complexity" as U.S. broadcasters begin to transmit all-digital signals after Feb. 17.

Cable companies are facing regulatory scrutiny over their practice of switching analog channels to digital -- leaving analog consumers with fewer channels to watch unless they use adapters, rent a digital set-top box or upgrade to digital. Cable operators say they are trying to accommodate customers by offering promotions such as free adapters.

In other TV signal newz, Fans of CBS programming and KMOV-TV who watch the station on Charter Communications can breathe a sigh or relief: Channel 4 will remain on the cable system. The station and the cable company announced Monday that a tentative settlement had been reached to not only allow Channel 4 to stay on Charter's local menu, but also to allow the cable company to finally start to supply its customers with KMOV's high-definition signal. The companies were at loggerheads because KMOV wanted to be paid for its programming like cable companies pay networks like ESPN, HBO and the Disney Channel for their services. But Charter leaders said they were opposed to the idea of paying to retransmit a signal that their customers could get for free with an antenna. KMOV leaders said they were asking for about a penny per day per Charter viewer within their broadcasting territory. Details of the settlement were not released.

In a week or so, those of you who think you got acting chops may have your chance to shine --or at least in the background--when a big Hollywood film is set to roll here in the Lou. One of Hollywood's biggest stars George Clooney (PICTURED) will star and film "Up in the Air," at various locations in the Show Me City. Oscar-nominated "Juno" director Jason Reitman is in charge of the big-budget film, writing and directing it. Clooney will play a constantly traveling, unapologetic corporate downsizer. Variety reports that as the Clooney character's life falls apart, he is on a mission to collect 1 million frequent flyer miles. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Walter Kirn.
Production crews set up shop Jan. 5 and could be working in the Gateway City for up to five months. Producers might need as many as 2,000 extras for the film. As of today, auditions will take place through Talent Plus Agency which will announce auditions for extras Jan. 16. Lambert Airport's closed D Concourse is one likely location for filming. The movie follows Clooney's character, a guy who lays people off for a living, on his mission to collect a million frequent flyer miles. The movie itself begins shooting at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and other locations in mid-March. For more info, go to
www.mofilm.org and go to Project Hotline.

Well, looks like the honeymoon between Anheuser Busch and Imbev is about to be over. Busch Entertainment has announced Tuesday the company won't serve free beer at theme parks anymore. The subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev plans to convert sampling centers at amusement parks to cafes and restaurants. That includes Busch Gardens in Florida, and Sea World's on both ends of the country. There were no reports of any themed parks in the St. Louis area, including Grants farm, was apart of this change. Belgium-based InBev bought St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch in November.

The St. Louis Rams have been in the newz recently. First, St. Louis Rams safety Windsor's Oshiomogho (O.J.) Atogwe (PICTURED)was named the most valuable player of the St. Louis Rams a few weeks ago. The former Herman Green Griffin and Essex Raven received the Daniel F. Reeves memorial award as the Rams' MVP in voting by his teammates. But recently, it was reported that Atogwe will become a free agent after this season and there has been speculation that Atogwe may want to get traded after the Rams lackluster 2-15 season. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams have "made clear their desire" to retain contract-year DBs O.J. Atogwe as well as and Ronald Bartell. Atogwe and Bartell have by far been St. Louis' best defensive backs this season, but it is speculated that the Rams will probably end up losing one to free agency. Atogwe, 27, is a candidate for the franchise tag. Bartell, 26, has excelled in zone coverage and will be among the top free agent corners if he hits the 2009 market.

In related news, it has been rumored that Tackle Orlando Pace, wide receiver Torry Holt and defensive end Leonard Little may want out with the Rams next season. If they stay, Holt would count $10.2 million on the salary cap next season. Pace would count more than $9 million, and Little $7.6 million.
After a 2-14 season that included losses in the final 10 games, the Rams are expected to make significant changes as they begin the effort to rebuild.

In related Rams newz, reports suggest that former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel will meet with the St. Louis Rams this Thursday to discuss coaching opportunities for next season. Fassel was considered for the Rams' job in 2006 but was not a finalist.

Also in the running is Minnesota Vikings assistant head coach Leslie Frazier who was reported as being interested in talking to the Rams. He's already scheduled for interviews with Denver and Detroit at the end of the week. Frazier is one of seven other known candidates for the Rams job who have either been interviewed or have interviews planned. The others: Green Bay's Winston Moss, Dallas' Ray Sherman, Miami's Todd Bowles, Baltimore's Rex Ryan, and Jim Haslett. Hmmm, we wonder how Haslett feels having to interview for a job that he thought was his when he replaced Scott Linehan? Can we spell I.N.T.E.R.I.M.?

It wasn’t a lot of hundreds this year for the annual family friendly First Night event on New Year’s Eve which was all due to the cold cold cold. Located near Grand Center and Blvd, First Night featured 75 musicians, dancers, jugglers and other performers at venues throughout the area. We heard that many seats remained empty at various theaters, and lines were short at the various venues.

If we're to believe Star Magazine, rapper Nelly is ready to pop the question to Ashanti. There's just one problem. Ashanti's mother -- Tina Douglas. A source told Star that Ashanti’s “momager” is a nosey body all up in her famous daughters music career, how she dress at events and stressing her to the “S power.” 'Before he makes her his wife,' adds the source, Nelly wants Ashanti to take more control of her life. In unrelated Nelly news, St. Louis hip-hop/urban station WHHL (104.1) had its much buzzed Top 50 St. Louis Songs of All Time (or in the past 20 years as the radio station footnoted) Countdown on New years day and Mr. Country Grammar himself was selected for his debut hit, 2000’s “Country Grammar’ as voted on by the radio station’s web pollsters. Well, you know with all lists, there will always be discussion of who, what, and why someone got chosen (present company included with the OUTTOWN Top 10 2008 lists), but like all lists, they definitely raise heat on the streets. Here are the Top 10 Songs from that list: 1.Nelly, “Country Grammar”; 2.Sylk Smoov, “Trick Wit a Bad Rap; ” 3.Da Hol 9, “Nina Pop” 4.Taylor Made, “Whirlwind; ” 5.-Kwon, “Tipsy; ”6.Chingy, “Right Thurr; ”7.Ebony Eyez, “In Ya Face; ”8.Huey, “Pop, Lock & Drop It; ”9. Jibbs, “Chain Hang Low; ”10.Beano, “Money Snap.

In other Nelly newz, if any of yawl had trekked to Nelly’s Holiday Party on X-mas nite at Skybox, you knew that he was a no-show. He was to co-host with Rams player Orlando Pace (who attended). There are no reports as to why Nelly didn’t attend but from inside OUTTOWN sources, it was supposedly because of the lack of a big crowd at the shindig that caused the St. Louis superstar to no-show. Then again, at 20 dollars a pop for entrance after 10:30 p.m., hmmm.

This JUST END: Nelly and the St. Lunatics will headline the official SuperBowl XLIII party that will be held at Orlando’s Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, Fla. Jan 30.

In other Lunatic newz, St. Lunatic Murphy Lee is following up his single “My Shoes” with his newest single called “"GWOP GETTA" to download it go to
http://derrtyent.com/ftp/MurphyLeeGwopGetters.zip

His forthcoming CD, “You See Me” according to his website is coming soon.

St. Louis other rap superstar Chingy made it public last month that he walked away (again) from his label Disturbing the Peace/Def Jam a few months back. Reports that he was dropped is supposedly incorrect and that the rapper just wanted out from Ludacris’ label and was still in good terms with DTP. Chingy was originally inked with DTO in 2003 and release his multiplatinum debut CD, Jackpot which garnered the smash hit “Right Thurr’ among others. After the success of Chingy's debut album, the partnership fizzled a year later after Chingy reportedly accused Luda for ripping him off in the royalties from his debut CD. After two CD’s with Capitol records and lower sales, Chingy returned to Luda in 2007 and released “Hate it or Love it,“ which most folk chose to ‘hate it.” Maybe Chingy can ink a deal with the new Notiofi Music label here in the Lou, hey they signed Ginuwine, so hey….

And speaking of Ginuwine, if you did a double take in the clubs these days and thought you may have saw R&B signer Ginuwine here in the Lou, well you thought right. Ginuwine has been campin’ here in the Show Me City recording music fro his upcoming CD,
The New Beginning at new music label Notifi Records located in the Brenwtood area. The urban crossover label signed the sexy singing star in August as its debut act. Ginuwine (whose "gubment" name is Elgin Baylor) was reported as saying that he was looking for a label where he could work on his music without the politics of a major label. He also was pissed after his last label 550 Music/Sony didn’t stop the release of the CD “I Apologize” to Siccness label in 2007, that was produced with reported stolen masters using three unauthorized songs and ten songs by other artists. His first single, yet to be determined, will be released this month, followed by the CD in the spring. A couple of tracks, "My Last Chance" and "Better Half," have already leaked online. The other artists signed to the label are St. Louis rapper Potzee, and St. Louis implants R&B singer Oli and female rapper Miss Be.

First up is Kinloch bred singer/actress Jennifer Lewis (PICTURED) who will be in the upcoming film, “Not Easily Broken.” Based on the novel by Bishop T.D.Jakes, the film stars actor Morris Chestnut, and actress Taraji P. Henson, who plays Chestnut’s wife. The couple is no longer thriving in martial bliss. Their relationship is further complicated by her live-in mother, Mary “Mama” Clark, played by Jenifer Lewis, who was last seen in Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns (She was last seen with Chestnut in the 2000 film, “Brothers”)” The film was directed by Bill Duke. “Broken; opens in theatres this Friday. Another St. Louis bred entertainer with a flick news is comedian G-Thang. His film “Disaster Movie” was released this week on DVD. The summer parody flop featured G-Thang as well as Matt Lanter, Kim Kardashian, Carmen Electra, and Vanessa Minnillo. The film, which only grossed $14 mill, took on this summer’s big movies including “The Dark Knight,” “Hancock,” “Sex and the City” and “Iron Man.”

She plays Agent Renee Walker on "24," opposite Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer. Another Lou native, Sarah Clarke, played Nina on the show the first two seasons.

Hundreds attended the grand opening party of STL tycoons/WB-TV 46 owners Steve and Mike Roberts (PICTURED) newest hotel, Hotel Indigo located at 4630 Lindell in the CWE a few weeks ago during the X-mas break. The hotel is part of an international group of 30 boutique hotels that are designed to be "an oasis for travelers who yearn for the uncommon hotel. Some of the attendees included former STL Comptroller Virvus Jones, the current St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green Atty. Wayman Smith, Jeff Bonner, Roberts’ brood Jeanne Roberts-Johnson and Jay Johnson, Mayor Francis Slay, Nelly’s manager Tony “T-Luv” Davis, Cedric The Entertainer’s manager Eric Rhone and CVC’s Rebecca Rodgers.

Two local women were recently honored nationally for their courage and talents respectively.

First up was 25 year old St. Louis native Rachel Lozano (RIGHT) who was honored in Glamour Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” recently alongside Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton, Secretary of state Condoleeza rice and Oscar winning actress Nicole Kidman. In 2002 doctors told Lozano that she had a zero percent chance of surviving a recurrence of Askin’s tumor, an extremely rare form of cancer she’d been battling through her teens. She is currently in remission and is a symbol of hope for those battling a life threatening disease. She’s currently studying to become an art therapist so she can work with sick children. And she’s become such an eloquent speaker about pediatric cancer that the Lance Armstrong Foundation asked her to meet with members of Congress about it.

The other is veteran East St. Louis native fabric artist Edna Patterson Petty. One of her quilts entitled "Road to Redemption." will be displayed among forty plus others at the Historical Society of Washington D.C., an exhibit in Washington celebrating the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president.
Petty, whose work also can be seen at the Emerson Park MetroLink station in East St. Louis , had just three weeks to make the quilt and quilt could be no bigger than 36 inches square and the images of Obama kept to a minimum. She was chosen by Carolyn L. Mazloomi, founder of the Women of Color Quilters Network who got a call by Roland L. Freeman, founder of the Group for Cultural Documentation in Washington, who came up with the idea and needed help selecting artists for the Obama exhibit..

Inspired by Chocolate is an event in which the fashion, corporate, and retail communities join forces to benefit the American Cancer Society. The focus of this special evening is a fashion show that spotlights designer fashions and, more importantly, the cancer survivors who model them. Models who walk the runway-young and old, male and female – are a survivor of cancer. The evening kicks off at 7 pm at the Motomuseum and will begin with a Chocolate party, followed by the fashion show. Immediately following the fashion show the excitement continues with the after-hours party hosted by Jive and Wail Dueling Pianos. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
