OUT 554--STL TIBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS WEDNESDAY

TIME TO GET OUT TOWNED!

Before we get into the arts and’ tainmnet, we continue our feature on African American artist who made an impact in their field. This week we feature, Jospehine Baker.

Born in East St. Louis, Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American expatriate entertainer and actress. She became a French citizen in 1937. Most noted as a singer, Baker also was a celebrated dancer in her early career. She was given the nicknames the "Bronze Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations. In France, she has always been known as "La Baker".

Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, to integrate an American concert hall, and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, but turned it down), for assisting the French Resistance during the Second World War and being the first American-born woman to receive the highest French military honor, the Croix de Guerre, and for being an inspiration to generations of African American female entertainers and others.

AUDITION SPOTLIGHT

We also would like to announce that Ma’atology Productions is seeking male and female actors for an upcoming workshop play about different facets of relationships. If you or someone you know who got acting chops and is comfortable on stage in any situation, email us a recent pic, bio and/or resume to maatspear@yahoo.com to be considered for an audition this month. Oh, and there will be pay for those are selected.

OK ON TO THE NEWZ

With all of the newz on the alleged abuse involving Rihanna and Chris Brown, a St. Louis connection has been added to the equation. St. Louis rapper Nelly will fill in for singer Chris Brown at an NBA All-Star party this weekend in Scottsdale, AZ, according to TMZ.
Click here to see the TMZ report. The teen superstar saw his world turn inside out this week after a felony criminal threat charge stemming from allegedly attacking girlfriend Rihanna after a Grammy pre-party last weekend. Since then, Brown has lost several endorsements, and radio stations have begun withdrawing his music from the airwaves. Rihanna is reportedly on to healing in her homeland of Barbados.

And speaking of the Grammys, a couple of St. Lousians were spotted at the Pre-Grammy gala threw by record mogul Clive Davis at the Beverly Hills Hotel. A pregnant Kimora Lee Simmons was reportedly there with actor boyfriend Djimon Honsou and comedian Cedric the Entertainer (PICTURED ABOVE) who was hangin’ with music legend Prince. In unrelated Cedric newz, he along with b-baller Shaq is hosting a Comedy Jam during the NBA All star weekend festivities. Fo rthsoe who can’t make the event in person, E3thos.com, an online portal dedicated to delivering urban video content, will stream the comedy show for TV. The pay-per-view is expected to garner over 1 million viewers when it airs February 14th. Cedric the Entertainer will share the stage with Tommy Davidson, Deray Davis, Kevin Hart, and Aries Spears. The idea was to bring the NBA weekend to the people and have a low cost Comedy Jam that everyone can afford. The Comedy Jam can be seen on E3thos.com’s On Demand Channel on February 14th, 2009 at 9:30 MT. The cost is $4.99. Click the link http://www.e3thos.com/demands to view the promotional spot.

As far as the Grammys last Sunday, two Chicagoans won awards. Rapper Kanye West won two awards for Rap Sung Performance (for “American Boy” with Estelle) and Rap Duo or group Vocal for “Swagger Like Us” (with T.I., Lil Wayne and Jay Z). Also a winner was Jennifer Hudson who took home Best R&b Album for her eponymous debut. Both West and Hudson also performed. (By the way, STL gospel artist Flame did not win for Best Rock/Rap Vocal. Tobymac won that award.) In unrelated Jennifer Hudson newz, Hudson will be on tour with soulster Robin Thicke for a tour this spring, with a reported St. Louis date mapped out. The tour, which begins April 2 in Philadelphia and ends May 8.

The on , off, on, off again deadline for the switchover from analog TV to digital is back off. Now it’s June 12 for TV’s switch to all-digital broadcasting after the House joined the Senate last Wednesday in approving the delay.

The Edward Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams, is getting a makeover. Leased by the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission, it approved a $30 million improvement project, including state-of-the-art scoreboards and video boards in both end zones. It also includes renovations to the Rams Club in the north end zone and creation of a Premium Club in the south end zone. As part of the scoreboard renovations, fans in the Rams Club and Premium Club will be able to view the field from those areas, and it will allow some daylight in the bowl area. Plus, most of the dark blue paint in the Dome will be replaced with a lighter color. Also, four suites will be combined to create 72 "super suite" seats that can purchased individually. All of the renovations are scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the Rams' 2009 season. As part of the lease terms set with the commission when the Rams moved here from Los Angeles, the Dome has to still rank among the top 25 percent of NFL stadiums in terms of quality by 2015, the stadium's 20th anniversary.
Now with the renovations, can we get a renovation goin’ for a winning team?

Funny man Jerry Seinfeld made his way to the Fox last Saturday for a one-nioght sold show. According to stltoday,.com. Seinfeld did what he does best, exploring the minutia of everyday life and exposing its ridiculousness. He did a long bit on what he called "sad technology" — iPhones and Blackberries and e-mail — all of which makes it easier to communicate without actual human contact. "I believe *69 was the first feature that was actually hostile to the caller," he said. He also wondered how the number selected by the phone company slipped through the organization unchecked. "Did not one of these people go to junior high school?" Seinfeld also dealt with useless phrases that clog up conversations and confuse consumers. "I saw a Tropicana orange juice commercial," he said. "It used to say ‘like fresh squeezed.’ Then it was ‘more like fresh squeezed.’ Now it’s ‘even more like fresh squeezed.’ " Building to that famous state of Seinfeldian exasperation, he pleaded, "If they could just…squeeze…the oranges!"
Ur…ok.

Glen Carbon resident Dennis Brigham was removed from the first round of Hollywood trials on American Idol last Tuesday(and had some smart words to say about the judges before he left) . Brigham had been accepted on to the show after auditioning in Kansas City, Mo., in August. For his audition, he sang Chris Brown’s “With You” as he danced. Before he went to Hollywood, Simon said he didn’t get him. After an impassioned plea about how very, very, very, very, very good he can sing, Paula decided to send him through. Simon said no. Randy couldn’t say no to all the begging and pleading. Kara said yes or no, we don’t know. But he was sent through to Hollywood. He was seen last week ion Fox 2 Morning Show to talk about his experience as well the last minute of his 15 minutes were ticking away. LOL Please, STL don’t make him the William Hung of the STL and have him invited to sing at events. PLEAAAAAAAAAAASE

In related news, Wilkes is going on Dr. Ian’s 50 Million Pound challenge after she purchased Dr Ian;’s Four Day Diet book and she pledged to lose weight (to get her “sexy back;” as she said on the radio show) and sign up 25,000 people via email to Team Sybil;. DAMN TALK ABOUT CALLING SOMEONE OUT. Edwards, by the way, was born in St. Louis.

It’s 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network – all without denting her ‘do! Don’t miss HAIRSPRAY, Broadway’s musical-comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and won eight 2003 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical. As The New York Times says, “If life were everything it should be, it would be more like HAIRSPRAY. It’s irresistible!”

THEATER EVENT

The Black Rep presents A Song for Coretta By Pearl Cleage On a cold, rainy day in February, five women stand in line with 14,000 other mourners, each waiting her opportunity to pay final respects to the one and only Coretta Scott King. These total strangers, born four decades apart, exchange story after story – memorably paying homage to Coretta while drawing poignant parallels to Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war. Pearl Cleage melds past to present and fact to fiction in this unforgettably thought provoking production. "The purpose of my writing, often, is to express the point where racism and sexism meet."

Pearl Cleage is an accomplished playwright, journalist, poet, and novelist. She probes issues of race, sex, and love in a growing body of literary work while she reveals poignant truths about brave black women. She has drawn national attention with her dramatic works, which include Flyin' West, and Blues for an Alabama Sky. Her first novel What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, was an Oprah's Book Club selection, a New York Times bestseller, and a BCALA Literary Award winner. She is also the author of I Wish I Had a Red Dress, Mad at Miles, and Deals with the Devil.
A contributing editor to Essence magazine, Pearl Cleag Erik Kilpatrick returns to The Black Rep making his directing debut on the Grandel stage.
