OUT 260--STL-TIDBITZ, EVENT-BITZ AND MORE!

STL-TIDBITZ

Man oh man(hunt)! As of this writing, The East Side was in a tizzy early today Wednesday when the police of all municipalities on the East Side was looking for ATL’s Julian Walker, 34, (PICTURED RIGHT) who trekked to the OFallon/Fairview Heights area to hideout after killing his ex-wife and his teenage girlfriend’s father. Well, after hours of finding him in the Fairview Heights area, he was found by police dead in the woods near Fountains on Highway 159 and I-64 in Fairview Heights (near St. Clair Square). The Metro east can breathe a sigh of relief(they had the city on lock almost with people ordered by the city of Fairview not able to come to work, or kids not being able to go to school and to keep their doors locked for possibilities of him taking someone hostage) , but it is still sad that things went down like it did. It was apparent that this guy had problems…………….

Looks like its decision time this week for the St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George (PICTURED RIGHT)as the deadline for him to make promotions in the department passed last Friday. As of today, Mayor Francis Slay is recommending disciplinary actions for the chief demote, suspend or fire. It has been reported that both parties would probably use the courts to get what they want (George requested his lawyer to appeal for the aptitude tests for promotion which caused this fiasco, as racially biased so he doesn’t have to go through the process. From a source, it is written ion the city charter that the fire chief has autonomy from the city and can promote anyone he pleases or not, but George doesn’t use that part of his sovereign for some reason Ironically, on the deadline day, the fire department had a 150th anniversary celebration which brought both George and Slay in the same venue!..........It is also interesting to note that while I was listening to Don Wolff’s radio show, “And justice For All” on KMOX last Sunday, he had a special show on tribute to the police and fire departments who help make our cities safe-R (He didn’t make one mention of the controversy going on in both fire and police departments oddly enuff, one of his guests was Chief George, who was a guest via telephone and he was calling from Atlanta! I wonder why he was there and not in the Lou? Hmmm, interesting…...In similar news, the activist group FIRE, a group consisting of black firefighters protested the home of newly appointed director of Public Safety Charles Bryson, who replaced Sam Simon, resigned as soon as he gave Fire Chief George the letter of ultimatum. Freeman Bosley Junior Show Radio talk show host Pat Washington made a valid point when she questioned the black firefighters protesting Bryson , a black man, who didn’t give George the ultimatum (Simon, who is white, did) and wondered if FIRE was planning to do the same at Simon’s abode…..There was a lot of sporting activities going on last weekend: The Cardinal games at Busch stadium, the Rams game at the Edward Jones Dome, the St. Louis Blues hockey at the Scott Trade Center, the Forest Park balloon race, Tour de Missouri, a bike trail competition--and Black Sunday at the Gateway International raceway in East St. Louis. I am sure that was unprecedented and it would have been nice if the Cards and Rams would have made the megaevent weekend the cherry to the Sundae by winning a game on Sunday (well, at least the Cards won one of the two games he Cards played on Sunday).................
The Cahokia School District is on strike. They want mo money mo money mo money……………Congrats to STL native/Baby Phat CEO/fashion diva Kimora Lee who hosted FAshion Police The Emmys on E! this week.............

According to St. Louis Post Dispatch’s Columnist Deb Peterson folks came out in droves to check out the St. Louis American’s/Foundation’s 20th Annual Salute to Excellence in Education Awards last Friday, mainly to check out keynote speaker "blactor" Hill Harper (PICTURED RIGHT) who according to Peterson, “,strolled through the audience with a microphone in hand and held interactive conversations that everyone could hear.” (I also heard he challenged the guys in the crowd to be mentors and did a lot of bragging about his being a millionaire and had to tug his tux for running over his time ). He appeared earlier at An American Place restaurant for a VIP reception expecting a small group and found an overflow crowd of about 250. The salute this year raised more than $135,000 for scholarships and community grants. Much love to my former gig at the St. Louis American for another success.

STL comedian Lavelle Crawford (PICTURED RIGHT) did his thing last Wednesday on the weekly NBC show Last Comic Standing. He has made it to the Top Two (along with Comedian Jon Reep). It looks pretty good for Crawford to win it all (He already won a trophy for the Best One Liner competition). A source told me they talked with Crawford and says that Crawford is confident that he will win. We will find out if he will go all the way this Wednesday at 8 p.m. on NBC. To watch his last week’s performance go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxGE8QIFH2A……

I hear that 2004 Americna Idol finalist/St. Louis singer Aloha (PICTURED RIGHT) is now being managed by former club Toxic owner Reno….....................More trouble for Casino Queen and the Illinois ‘s cigarette ban law, A recent survey from The American Lung Association of Illinois showed there was too much second hand smoke goin on which could affect the health of workers and gamers. Meanwhile, Anti-smoking advocates are hoping to lobby anticipating lawmakers to exempt casinos from Illinois' soon-to-be indoor smoking ban in Jan………

The St. Joseph Tourism dept is getting gangsta—like Jesse James. It was reported that the tourism bureau petitioned for the producers of the flick, The Assassination of Jesse James’(PICTURED RIGHT) to move the locale of the film to be shot in St. Jospeh over a year ago. St. Joseph wanted it there cause its the place Jesse James supposedly was assassinated. Well, the producers took the flick to parts of Canada to supposedly save money and get tax creditation. Well, the city ain’t giving up, for a month now, the bureau has been trying to get the premiere of the film be in the city that James was assassinated. Well, they have two more days before its US release so, it doesn’t look good.(Oh, and isn’t actor Brad Pitt, who is playin Jesse James from Missouri? Springfield I think.)………….I guess the poetry events in the STL got their competition returning. For fans of Got LYRICS, it will be back in full effect, October 24 at VanGogh, located at 3200 Shenadoah………… Congrats to OUTTOWN fan/former St. Louis American writer Daniel Brown, or shall I say Atty. Brown, Esq. he recently passed the bar. You go, boy. (Now you can practice law and help folks get their tickets fixed at the St., Louis flea markets. LOL)……Happy belated b-day to local actor. model Stuart Allen who kicked it with his friends at drunken Fish and club 1014 to celebrate the big 3-0……………

Whats up with this abs competition with 100.3 The Beat personalities Hypeman Dwight Stone (PICTURED ON THE RIGHT OF PIC)and Shorty(Is this a local version of the Fiddy/Kanye battle?)? They got a contest going on and fans can vot eon their results at http://www.100.3thebeat.com/pages/hypeman.html (looks like D-Stone is winning) Also, fitness trainer Kason(PICTURED ON THE LEFT OF PIC), who is training both personalities, is also giving fitness advise on Wednesdays on 100.3 The Beat..............
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center is celebrating its Founders Day on Sept. 26.The day begins at 1 p.m., with an alumni parade, which will start from 11th and State streets. The event will include a presentation, performances, tours, exhibits and a reception at the East St. Louis High Education Campus, 601 James R. Thompson Boulevard, Building A, in East St. Louis. For more information, visit www.siue.edu/50, and click on schedule of events…..My neph Jerome Stewart III is now playing high school football with Belleville East (The Lancers). I am going to his game this Friday at Bellville West…………………
I hear that East St. Louis native/poet/photographer Sherman Fowler is ill. He is suffering from diabetes and has developed massive weight gain that he is now confined to a wheelchair. My thoughts and prayers are with him. We collaborated on many writing projects together in the late 1990s including the book, “Visible Glory” with SIUE English Professor/poet Eugene B. Redmond in 1998.

OUTTOWN gives a R.I.P. to Frank Peters Jr., a former arts editor and music critic for the Post-Dispatch who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972, died of a heart attack last Friday (Sept. 14, 2007). He was 76.

MIA (MISSING IN ACTION) FILE. Where is STL comedian G-Thang?

BLIND-BITZ. Which STL administrator emailed OUTTOWN recently in hopes that this website could omit a post of their event due to this administrator’s fear of backlash? (Hint. The administrator is not a white male and the event was attended by a color coordinated guests)
