OUT 268--STL-TIDBITZ, EVENT-BITZ AND MORE

STL-TIDBITZ

Well, looks like the news buzz in the city has been former Fire Chief Sherman George’s (PICTURED LEAVING THE MAYOR’S OFFICE) who was demoted to Deputy Chief (with a $20,000 pay cut) and the new Interim Chief existing deputy chief Steve Kotraba was promoted through Mayor Francis Slay's Office this week. The former chief has 10 days to appeal the decision to the board which is procedures. George made his rounds to the media after his demotion, one being on Tony Scott’s Breakfast Crew Morning Show on Monday where he talked about his next step. He talked about the history behind his demotion regarding the promotions test which caused friction at the beginning when it came to his decision of approving a test that was fair and not based to not be approved by the Mayor’s Office. He also said that the Mayor’s Blog (which strangely enough won Best Blog in the Riverfront Times’ Best of the STL Poll last week) also reprinted a letter that George wrote to the Mayor in regards of the unfairness of the test. George went on to say that he felt he was dissed and that sometimes doing the right thing and having integrity is what you have to stand for. It was also interesting when George broke down the racial politics of the department in regards to his rise to the fire chief and how the power changes hands. For example, he said, during his 40 year career, the power was in the Captains hands. When he became Captain, the power went to the Battalion Chief. When he became BC, the power went to the Deputy Chief. When he became DC, the power went to the Fire Chief. When he became FC in the early 2000s, the power went to the Director of Public Safety (CLASSIC). In related news, Firefighter organization FIRE, NAACP and the Black Clergy are also reported to make their move in the courts as well to contest the demotion of the former Fire Chief. Meanwhile, a day after being “interimmmed” chief Kotraba did his duty of doing promotions within the department, 5 police were promoted to battalion chief, 2 African American males, 2 whites and one white female. Promotions for the captain position were going to be done before the end of this week. In my opinion, I think George is going to retire early. Even if he is given his title as Fire Chief, he thought it was hell before the demotion, every move he makes will be scrutinized even more by the Mayor’s Office..................................Did the Animal Control department ever find that cow that was wondering around the STL highway after the numerous cows were either thrown out of for were killed from the truck that overturned on Poplar Street Bridge last week?.......................What was up with the young University City high male student being selected as Homecoming Queen of the school? I can imagine how the homecoming king and queen dance was like. LOL...................Looks like Cahokia High School and the GM workers are back on the J.O.B………………Is the Post’s Kevin Johnson still doing his entertainment column for stltoday.com?..............

Longtime jazz afficianado and talk show host Don Wolff (PICTURED RIGHT) had his last radio programs (Saturday Night Jazz Show and “Justice for All”) on KMOX this past weekend. I didn’t get if he was retiring or he was politely given the off the air boot or not, but he was a cool guy who wa down for the cause of justice for all (he is a lawyer by trade, BTW).………Speaking of radio guys, looks like longtime radio personality Gentleman Jim Gates is back on air. He can be heard Sundays on Foxy 95 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. He was a longtime PD for the now defunct WESL-AM radio station. (FYI, Did you know that his son is popular St. Louis dee-jay Needles?) ……… What wassup with the guy who ran over the leg of a Galleria worker Tuesday night after he grabbed her purse and her trying to get it back while he drove away in a pick up truck? The ploy was the man getting out of his truck and approached her to ask for a light for a cigarette as she was waiting for her ride in front of the mall. Well, fellow OUTTOWN fans you know we were somewhat relieved when we found out the identity of the robber. You know what Im sayin. LOL………………………

Looks like Nelly’s new single, “Wadsyaname” is not burning up the Billboard charts. The song has yet to crack the Top 40 on the Hot 100 and it is resting in the lower 30’s of the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Track charts. Hopefully the next single released form his upcoming CD, “Brass Knuckles” will put get folks back into the Nelly groove (Besides, the charts was sleeping on Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Mr Nothin’ before his blockbuster “Graduation” CD and his now No. 1 Hot 100 song, “Stronger’ was released). Before jumping to concluisons, let’s see how the song does in the upcoming week when the new publication of Billboard is out this Thursday........................ Did anyone know that Boyz II Men (more like Three Men minus One) is performing Thursday at the Bottleneck club in St Charles(Tickets I hear are 45 bones!?...............…I wonder what happened for Martini Mondays at the Loft to be cancelled temporarily until Alice Prince, the creator of MM, finds another venue to hold it? It was a huge media blitz for those to not go to the Loft for this event……………I hear that STL architect Anthony Robinson is having house party at his two story house in the CEW this Saturday. (Whurr was my evite?LOL) …………..Speaking of events, the Billionaire Boyz Club’s event during the Gateway Classic Weekend I hear was a bust………And speaking of the Classic, I hear this year’s event held at the Edward Jones Dome was the lowest attended………………

Congrats go out to adjunct professor emeritus at Harris Stowe University/District 189 educator/Argus columnist/school namesake Katie Harper Wright (PICTURED IN CENTER) who among 26 others will be honored with an "Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans" . The ceremony will take place Nov. 11 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Chase Park Plaza. This is the fifth annual such event hosted by St. Andrew's Resources for Seniors. Congrats also goes out to STL bassist Wildmann who had a CD release party at Janae’s West last Saturday.

…And lastly, The Riverfront Times put out its annual Best of the RFT Poll and my blog did not win for Best Blog. I knew it was a longshot , but it was fun to be considered in the running with all of my OUTTOWN fans voting (I also like to give a shout out to FREE TIME’s Daryl Freirson who felt I should have won). The Blog that won was Mayor Francis Slay's (PICTURED LEFT) blog, From the Mayor’s Desk (Readers Pick was Urban Review). I think cause of the controversy goin on with the mayor putting the private letter of former Fire Chief Sherman George on there I’m sure made the RFT readers vote for it (but who reads Urban Review?. Well, like Freirson said to me, “There’s always next year.”
