OUT 314--STL-TIDBITZ

What's up OUTTOWN fans! Ma’atology here again for the 08 givin it to ya on Hump Back Day .

Cherre’s what’s up for this week.

I guess the hype is over (FOR NOW) of the Shutdown of parts of I-64. The first week of the 1-64/40 Highway Shutdown Commuters left early and followed alternate routes to help make their first full day of the first full workweek of the Interstate 64 closure run smoothly. With the exception of two early car accidents, traffic flowed smoothly during the morning commute Monday and motorists experienced the normal congestion. Rush time started and peaked between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., an hour earlier than it did before the closure. The $535 million project will last two years, with one five-mile stretch of the interstate closed during 2008 and a second during 2009. The second section of highway to be closed will stretch from Kingshighway Boulevard to I-170.The goal is to replace aging bridges and roadways that date back as far as 70 years, MoDOT's spokeswoman Linda Wilson said. Of the 30 bridges along the route, about half have been deemed structurally deteriorated, she said. Eighty percent of the project's funding comes from the federal government, with the remainder coming from state transportation coffers. Well, we’ll see how smooth things get when emergencies start happening with police, fire and ambulances trying to get to and from
accidents, incidents and medical issues. Hello???

Was it me or was it Springtime again earlier this week? This past Monday broke temp records. It got to a high of 67 degrees tied a record set in 1907. The normal average is 31 degrees, but it was short after the warm gusts of air from the South -- bringing the unseasonably warm weather--were expected to collide with a cold front, resulting in severe thunderstorms. followed by tornadoes across the Missouri area. In Phelps County, just south and west of Rolla, homes were leveled, barns destroyed and dozens of cattle were dead due to the storms. Me? I chilled in the storm shelter near the Water Geyser at my job. I wasn’t taking any chances for Mother nature to blow me away.

The smoking ban in Illinois public places went into effect Jan. 1 It's been nearly a week since a "no smoking ban" took effect in Illinois. Before the new law took effect, bar and restaurant owners feared it would snuff out some of their business. Paul Ventimiglie, owner of Tony's in Alton, says its still too soon to know what's going to happen to his business as a result of the new law. He says his restaurant and bar were very busy this weekend and everyone was talking about the new law. Ventimiglie believes ninety nine percent of his customers like the ban and say because of it they may to visit his restaurant much more often. But others destroyed some of his "no smoking” signs. So he believes some of his customers hate the new mandate from the state. He says the true test will come in about six months. Yeah, puff puff gone!

Locally in Illinois (Belleville to be exact) , two events that happened last weekend that came home—sort of speak and were TMP (TOO MUCH PLAYIN) moments …Last Saturday, a 15-year-old girl crashed a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe into the house of 58-year-old Ingrid K. Jordan, police said Monday at 2404 Antiquity Lane (PICTURED). After hitting a neighbor's 1992 Chevrolet Corsica, the Corsica hit the house. Jordan's body was found on her living room couch, St. Clair County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Johnson said, adding that "the impact of the vehicle did not affect the room she was found in." Investigation is now is whether Jordan died before or because of the crash. A 16-year-old girl was the only passenger in the car. They did not receive any injuries. As of this writing, The two teens were released to their parents Saturday after being questioned at the sheriff's office. The parents did not know the 15-year-old had taken the vehicle. She is being charged with driving without a valid driver's license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operation of a vehicle without insurance (What’s tripped out about the story is the incident happened a few doors down from my house!) Then, Last Sunday, a man was shot by an unnamed Belleville police officer at the Belleville Quick Stop at 1258 Lebanon Ave. Police were responding to a report of a suspicious-looking black man who appeared to be armed (but the gun was a toy) . The 911 caller said the man looked like he was going to rob the store. When police arrived the man pulled what appeared to be a gun from his waist and raised his arm. The officer fired one round and hit the man. He successfully underwent surgery Sunday afternoon at an area hospital. (This event happened about 15 minutes away from my house!)

Speaking of houses, St. Louis native, Missouri House Rep and Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee in Washington, D.C. Lacy Clay (PICTURED) will be on the House Oversight Committee panel on the Sen. George Mitchell’s report of Cy-Young winner Roger Clemens and 85 other players allegedly involved in abuse of performance-enhancing drugs, and baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. The hearing will take place on Jan. 16. Lacy was also part of the house oversight committee on the same issue in April 2005 when former St. Louis Cards Mark McGwire testified on the same matter.

You got your sold out Hannah Montana ticket yet for her show Jan 16 at Scott Trade Center? If you did, you must have either got it from a scalper or tried to get in with the lawsuits against the scalpers who got them and jacked the prices up through her fan club and resulting in a settlement resulting in and more tickets released. The January 15th concert was added on to the tour after the first St. Louis concert (and every other concert on the tour) sold out almost immediately after tickets went on sale
. I wonder if hype like this would have been on a Thats So Raven concert? Hmmm.

Is Nelly a baby-daddy? According to MediaTakeOut.com he is. A few months ago the gossip site reported that an Atlanta woman was claiming to be pregnant with rapper Nelly's baby. Well the site is reporting that the woman has given birth. The woman, a former exotic dancer who has asked to remain anonymous, gave birth to a seven pound boy at a Georgia hospital last Sunday evening. MediaTakeOut also reported that both the child, who's named Rashaan, and his mother are doing fine. So far, Nelly has not yet visited the newborn. Well, hmm, it makes you wonder if the lyrics from Nelly's single, "Wadsyaname" a true story about hittin the skins with a female while on layover waiting on a flight. Gotta check the song out again. LOL

Last Friday, I checked out my youngest nephew, 10-year-old Tyrek Stewart’s(SEEN WITH BALL) b-ball game that is sponsored by the YMCA. He played the game against a team sponsored by Allsup at Southwest Illinois College . Although hi steam lost 37-34, it was a noble effort (yet some of the parents in the crowd were akin like it was the NBA). He plays point guard.

Later that Friday, I had drinks with my tax man Joshua Beeks to discuss my taxes at Reggie’s across from the Fox Theatre (I also had a gourmet burger that was deeeee-lishous!), Later on, I checked out Stress Free Fridays, that was held at the newly constructed Sub Zero Bar and Restaurant in the Central West End. They have added an additional space and downstairs they have a private VIP area of about four rooms for private affairs which comprised of TVs (one room has a TV where you can se e the action upstairs).

Last Saturday, me and two of my buddies checked out two venues that were my first time attending. The first was Lester’s a restaurant and bar in Ladue. One of the buddies was aspiring model Fred Williams (IN PIC--thanks MAJ for the cell cam pic ). Me, Fred and MAJ were there to check out the NFL Playoff game of Pittsburgh vs. Jacksonville and to taste these lemon peppered wings that MAJ said was off the chain. Well, I am here to say, they are. I ate about 10 of them and they came off the bone after I sucked the meat off of them. After I finished them, I did a Florida Evans and said, “Good….good…GOOOOOOOODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! and had my buddies as well as the clients around us cracking up ( I am also still hitting my chest from the Yaeger bombs a Steelers fan bought allo fus when his team lost! LOL) . Later on, we checked out a bar called Peppertitties, ooops, I mean, Peppertinni’s in chesterfield to check out veteran singer and former namesake club owner, Gene Lynn. We were there and had a helluva chattin it up with the barflys , naming that tune with them and drinking 2 bottles of Cordon Negro Brut (bka Black Bottle Bubbly)one bought by us and one bought by one of the barflys). So to the STL stars, if you wanna change of pace from the usual club scene and crowd, check out these two spots and tell em you heard about them through OUTTOWN!

Last weekend, I got word from a source that former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield was in the STL last weekend partying it up at Lush on Washington with a buddy. He was in the STL for an undisclosed event. I didn’t get the event that was going on, but I hear he made an impression on the clientele at Lush (my source even took a cell phone pic of the boxing champ). Maybe he was goin to check out Cory Spinks’ trainer Kevin Cunningham on training him for a comeback? Uh, maybe not.

Former St. Louis American fashion editor Keith Underwood (PIC ON RIGHT) will be St. Louis next weekend for the King Dream Conference Jan. 18-21 (SEE EVENT-TIDBITZ FOR MORE INFO). He will be assisting event celebrity guest Lamann Rucker (PIC ON UPPER RIGHT), one of his clients of his PR firm, UMA Worldwide. Rucker is the co-star of the hit film, "Why Did I Get Married." Last Comic Standing" finalist and St. Louis native Lavelle Crawford is also scheduled to appear.……......................St. Louis native Derrick Johnson has to go back to lifting weights. Johnson, who recently won the American Open Weightlifting competition in Birmingham in the 62KG division, has to compete again in Peru March 16 in a competition that got him to the Birmingham event. Johnson said that there were several American athletes who tested positive for steroids and were disqualified. Thus, Johnson and several lifters who did NOT inject the growth hormone, have to compete again to fill the empty slots. After that, hopefully Johnson will set foot to the Olympic Trials May 16-17 in Atlanta, Ga. Then it will be off to Beijing in the summer. Good luck to ya!...................................Happy belated b-day to 1st Friday co-creator Fred Finley……

……………..And lastly, although Presidential hopeful, Illinois Senator Barak Obama came in second in the New Hampshire primaries this past Tuesday, Obama is making strides for his nomination in the candidacy. Last Tuesday, he made history becoming the first African American to win a caucus. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Mr. Obama had 37.6 percent of the delegate support, Mr. John Edwards 29.8 percent and Mrs.Hilary Clinton had 29.5 percent. Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico was fourth, at 2.11 percent…………………..

On a side note, St. Louis American City editor Alvin Reid was on The Paul Harris Show on KMOX soon after Obama won the Iowa Caucus. Speaking on Obama, Reid said “He (Obama) is a viable candidate, but I am not convinced he can be President. (Reid also said that he endorsed Presidential hopeful Senator John Edwards). Well, Mr. Reid., we’ll see what happens.

MIA FILE. Where is STL singer and former 2004 American Idol contestant Pierre?

BLIND BITZ. Which mover and shaker is laying low these days supposedly from dodging folk they owe? (Hint. This mover and shaker coordinated events on a regular basis and in this decade some people “voted” for this person.)
