OUT 430--STL TIDBITZ AND MORE!

Hello OUTTOWNERS

How was your week?

Its Wednesday so its OUTTOWN TIME!
As we get into the first week of Summer here is what’s up. The last unsung artist we are paying homage to is Phil Perry and the Montclairs

Born in
East St. Louis (some reports say Springfield) , IL on January 12, 1952, Perry is an R&B musician and a former member of the soul group The Montclairs. They Montclairs were a Sweet Soul vocal group who were, actually, named after a local brand of cigarettes! This R & B vocal group from East St. Louis comprised of Perry lead vocalist, David Frye, George McLellan, Kevin Sanlin and Clifford 'Scotty' Williams. The group recorded their first single in 1969, which was only distributed in the St. Louis area, and the following year began recording for bandleader / producer, the late, Oliver Sain at his Archway Studio. They also recorded 'Hey You! Don't Fight It!' on Arch in the late 60's, and recorded other sides for the Vanessa, Premium and United International imprints.

Sain arranged for the group to be signed with Paula Records, based in Shreveport, Louisiana. At Paula the group released the songs for the label, 'Dreaming Out Of Season' (number 34 R & B), in 1972, 'Beggin' Is Hard To Do' (number 33 on Billboard) and 'Make Up For Lost Time' (number 46 R & B) in 1974. In 1974, Clifford Williams was drafted into the U.S. military and the group continued as a quartet. Their only album, 'Dreamin' Out Of Season', was released in 1972, with the track 'Prelude To A Heartbreak' (number 70 R & B) released as a single the following year. Their last chart record was 'Baby You Know (I'm Gonna Miss You)' (number 40 on Billboards charts) in 1974. After the Montclairs left Paula in 1975, they disbanded.

In 1979, Phil Perry moved to Los Angeles, hooking up with producer Chuck Jackson who signed the singer to Capitol, along with Kevin Sanlin of the Montclairs, to form the duo Perry & Sanlin. Their first single reached number 81. , Phil Perry has spent most of his career as one of the most sought-after backing vocalists in the music business. His bright, multi-octave range has played a supporting role on dozens of albums by such acts as Anita Baker, Boz Scaggs, Rod Stewart, Peabo Bryson and George Duke.

In 1985 Perry married soul/jazz singer Lillian "Tang" Tynes, and began a marriage partnership that has lasted ever since. They continued as songwriters and freelance producers (Perry wrote and prioduced Aretha Franklin;’s 1980 R&B hit, “United Together”.)

Perry issued his own debut LP, 'The Heart Of The Man', for Capitol in 1991 where he had his biggest success with the remake of Aretha Franklin’s number-one R&B hit "Call Me", as well as the top forty R&B singles "Amazing Love" and "Forever" all from the hit album The Heart of the Man, even though he has released many albums since his breakthrough in 1991, he has not had major success since. His follow-up album, 1994’s Pure Pleasure, was perhaps his best, and included fantastic remakes of “After the Love is Gone” and “If Only You Knew” and a seven minute cover of the Spinners’ “Love Don’t Love Nobody” that was sheer magic.

During the 90s, Perry also received increased coverage on Smooth Jazz radio through his guest work on albums by Lee Ritenour and Windham Hill subsidiary of Private Music who signed Perry, along with Barry White and Peabo Bryson, in an attempt to become the major label in the confluence of the Urban Adult Contemporary and Smooth Jazz formats. His Private Music debut, One Heart One Love, was aimed straight at the Smooth Jazz market and hit the top five on the back of its killer title track, despite being perhaps his weakest album. His follow-up album, My Book of Love, received less attention, but was a far stronger album. Book was also the album on which Perry began to take a more active role in songwriting and production, putting his personal imprint beyond the vocal performance. This led to his lead songwriting role on 2001’s Magic, an excellent album on Peak Records that showed Perry in complete control over his music.

He was also featured on a song with The Emotions, "I Wanna Thank You For My Love", on the Bebe's Kids soundtrack. In 2007 he toured with saxophonist Dave Koz.

And now onto the newz.

The levees in the Missouri area have been filling up in the newz these days. Just Tuesday, The swollen Mississippi River burst another levee, submerging farmland and threatening a residential area whose occupants had already moved out in anticipation of a flood. The Elm Point levee failure near St. Charles comes as teams furiously fill sandbags to reinforce other waterlogged embankments guarding towns still waiting for the arrival of the huge river's flood crest. A mobile home park where about 700 people live near the Elm Point Levee had already been evacuated.Forecasters expect the last stretch of the bloated river to crest later this week..

The constant pressure of the river remains also the primary concern in Lincoln County, where officials asked for volunteers Monday to help fill 50,000 sandbags to fortify the 2 1/2-mile-long Pin Oak levee, Federal officials said they couldn't be sure it would survive through the river's crest at Winfield later in the week. If it breaches, the river will swamp 100 homes in east Winfield, as well as 3,000 acres of farm fields, several businesses and a city ballpark. A muskrat that burrowed a hole in the soft ground released a geyser of water, and officials said it took nearly six hours Monday to choke off the leak.

In Foley, north of Winfield, floodwaters late Monday were filling the higher part of town. The east side of Foley was already submerged. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the levees along the Mississippi River near the Metro East area are doing their jobs. However, they should be watched.Officials say the Mississippi at St. Louis will crest at 37.5 feet, a moderate flood level about 12 feet below the 1993 record.

The five metro-east levee systems, which are located at Wood River, the Chain of Rocks Bridge, East St. Louis, Prairie Du Pont and Fish Lake, were built about 40 years ago and were designed to withstand a 500-year level event. However, reports say recent flooding has shown the levees cannot perform at a 100-year level.Officials say once river levels recede, the Army corps will be able to assess the damage and determine what work needs to be done to the improve the levees.

The brewing of a hostile takeover of Anheuser Busch and Imbev continues. Last week, the prez of Imbev Carlos Brito visited D.C and met with Mo. Senator Clair McCaskill, then he met with Mo. Senator Kit Bond (PICTURED FAR RIGHT) to talk about the company's proposed buyout of Anheuser-Busch.Sen. Bond told Brito that the St. Louis community depends on Anheuser-Busch for charitable and civic endeavors. He said the buyout could cause St. Louis workers to lose their jobs and hurt the state's economy. Both senators want to ensure InBev's proposed takeover of Anheuser-Busch would not create a monopoly of the U.S. beer market. Then, The head of Mexican beer company Grupo Modelo, Carlos Fernandez (PICTURED RIGHT), stepped down from the board of Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. as the remaining directors of the iconic American brewer of Budweiser are considering a $46 billion takeover offer from Belgian brewer InBev.
The resignation of, president and chief executive of Grupo Modelo SAB, was announced Friday -- the same day that news reports say the Anheuser-Busch board was to meet in St. Louis to consider InBev's $65 a share offer for the nation's largest brewer. St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch (who owns 50 percent of Modelo’s stock) did not say why Fernandez resigned, and Grupo Modelo representatives in Mexico declined comment. His departure leaves the board with 13 members. Grupo Modelo said in a statement that Fernandez resigned from the Anheuser-Busch board "to avoid the appearance of any conflicts."
What conflict may that be? It was reported that AB may buy all of Modelo’s stock to offset Inbev;s takeover. One person leaving the board is going to affect the outcome? Hmmm, this sound s a but strange.
Meanwhile, Union leaders representing InBev workers in Brazil, Canada and Europe are warning AB about ImBev;s work ethic. "They should worry, because the production is going to be concentrated and the work force reduced," says Siderlei Oliveira, president of Brazil's 1.2 million-member food workers union, citing a reduction in Brazil's brewery workers to 13,000 from 23,000 since the 1990s. "This is the strategy that they have."
Hmm, they are probably right on that case. Whats that saying, out with the old , in with the new?

The Live on the Levee/Fair St. Louis activities will be moved to a safer location cuz of the flooding. Both will be mov ed to Soldiers Field nearly a mile away from the Archgrounds at 14th and Market streets. Floodwater forced organizers to move the summer series of free concerts and family activities off the St. Louis riverfront. Organizers could not find a safe downtown location to launch the annual display, considered one of most spectacular in the nation. River levels are expected to be low enough for barge traffic, but not so low to accommodate large crowds on Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard, the original site of the events. Jefferson National Memorial Deputy Superintendent Frank Mares said spectators are welcome to view the fireworks at the Gateway Arch. However, he expects portions of the Arch's staircases to remain fenced off until floodwater has receded and city street crews clear Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard of debris. The National Park Service will erect checkpoints into the park. There will be no other organized activities or vendors on the Arch grounds.Fair St. Louis runs July 4-5. Live Off the Levee runs on Friday and Saturday evenings July 11 to Aug. 2. The 15- to 20-minute fireworks displays start at 9:15 p.m.

On the East Side, federal officials have declared that East St. Louis' levee system doesn't meet current standards for flood protection. The questionable levee system protecting the city's population of largely poor, black and disenfranchised residents has produced comparisons to New Orleans. There, the levee system's failure in Hurricane Katrina drew attention to the city's racial divisions and government's perceived indifference to blacks, many of whom lived along the flawed levees. llinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich last month signed into law a measure that lets Illinois counties each create a flood-protection district that could increase the local sales tax by a quarter of a cent to help pay for levee improvements.
East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. (PICTURED) would love to see those repairs on the levee in this once-thriving city where a casino now is the biggest employer. But Parks trusts that the current levees will hold as the Mississippi River rises.
Just this week a small sand boil was found in East St. Louis by a Corps of Engineers inspection team. The boil is being countered by the Metro East Sanitary District (MESD) with technical assistance from the Corps of Engineers. The boil has been assessed as manageable. Sand boils occur when high river elevations on the outside of the levee create enough hydrostatic pressure to push fine particles of soil to the surface inside the levee along with the water flow.If left unchecked this groundwater flow could erode the levee foundation and weaken the levee.``We feel, based on what we heard from the Army Corps, that we're not in imminent danger,'' Parks said.
In unrelated city of East St. Louis news, the city hired 10 new police officers last week but City Councilman Delbert Marion said he was not happy with the latest group of police recruits hired by East St. Louis and wants a more thorough investigation into their backgrounds. The News-Democrat reported that one of the 10 new officers sworn in last week had an outstanding warrant on a charge of domestic battery. Marion said some of the other recruits have criminal backgrounds or questionable employment histories.Marion, who did not attend the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, said more thorough background checks should have been performed. He added the credibility of the East St. Louis Police Department is at stake.

A St. Charles man is in critical condition at a St. Charles hospital after being struck by lightning Tuesday. The man was struck at the Deerfield Village Mobile Home Park during a thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon. Neighbors say, he was out on his porch during the storm. They think he was reaching for a glass when lightning struck. They heard a loud crack and ran outside. The glass had shattered and their neighbor was lying unresponsive on the porch. Emergency crews were able to restart his heart at the scene. They took him to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.

Any one go to the Race for the Cure Marathon this past Saturday?

Congrats to two St. Louis based athletes who will be in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The first is Sarah Haskins (PICTURED) as part of the U.S. Swim team. Haskins had the inside track on the final Olympic spot before Sunday's race. She had finished second in each of the previous qualifiers, and only one other woman had a chance to take the spot, Sarah Groff, who had to be the first American across the line. Haskins also was coming off a strong showing two weeks ago at the World Championships in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she finished second. Haskins will be joined in Beijing by Julie Swail Ertel, who finished seventh Sunday in 2:07:12. The men's team also was completed Sunday, when Hunter Kemper joined Jarrod Shoemaker and Matt Reed by finishing sixth in the men's elite race, won by Rasmus Henning of Denmark in 1:54:21. Kemper finished in 1:54:58.Another St. Louisan, Jillian Petersen, finished 18th in the women's race, in 2:13:11. Petersen recently moved to Colorado Springs to train and qualified for the race just six weeks ago by winning a continental-level race, the circuit ranked just below world cup, in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Looks like the salmonella tomato scare is over. In Missouri there were six cases of Samonella poisoning in the STL, and 400 overall in Missouri. There were also 7 cases in the Illinois side of the STL.

There were several law breaking cases that were happening this week Bobby O. "Na Na" Williams was sentenced to life without parole Tuesday for the 1994 murder of Sharon Bushong, a clerk who was dragged to the cash register in a west Belleville convenience store and executed with one shot to the head. The sentencing ended seven years of legal wrangling that resulted after former Gov. George Ryan in 2003 commuted the death sentence of all inmates on Illinois' death row. Williams, who had been found guilty by a jury in 1996 and was sentenced to death, was returned to the St. Clair County Jail where he waited more than seven years to learn his fate.

Next up, was a 26-year-old former employee of Copia Urban Winery and Market faces arson charges for the blaze that badly damaged the downtown St. Louis business. The federal charges were announced on Friday. In addition to the restaurant and winery, the adjoining Vanguard Loft Apartments were also damaged in the fire in December.Gilbert Summers was indicted by a federal grand jury on two felony counts of arson and arrested on Thursday. The blaze happened about two hours after the restaurant closed. No one was hurt, but several people were evacuated from loft apartments.

Then, an Illinois prison inmate has been accused of trying from behind bars to arrange a murder of a girl he molested and her mother. Edward H. Bareiter Jr., 39, was indicted in federal court in East St. Louis last week on charges of murder for hire and conspiracy to commit murder for hire. Despite the wording of the charges, nobody was hurt. Prosecutors declined to comment on the case Monday, and there was little information in Bareiter's indictment beyond that the conspiracy is alleged to have occurred in summer 2006 in Clinton County and that his mother Barbara A. Rosselot, of Pierron, was involved. Rosselot was sentenced last August to 87 months in federal prison after she pleaded guilty to a murder for hire charge and admitted helping her son plan the crime from the Clinton County jail by acting as an intermediary.

A mosquito sample collected in Jackson County has tested positive for the West Nile virus -- the first in Southern Illinois this year -- according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Other mosquito batches testing positive have been found in DuPage County near Chicago, Tazewell County, which includes the Pekin area, and Adams County, which takes in Quincy. Two in 10 people who are bitten by an infected mosquito become ill. Symptoms include fever, headache and body ache. Department recommendations about mosquito control after flooding may be found at http://www.ready.illinois.gov/mosquitomemo.pdf. More information about West Nile virus can be found at http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnv.htm.

Earlier we talked about Live on the Levee move to Soldiers Field. Well, the move mos def didn’t affect one of the performers who will open up for one of the major acts. Pop rocker/keyboardist Shannon Nicole will open for national recording artist Joss Stone. A former background singer
There are many artists who do not follow traditional methods to become successful. Shannon Nicole is an example of this type of rebellious singer/songwriter. Shannon never followed her sheet music when tickling the ivories of her piano and disregarded vocal lessons from celebrities Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake and the band Destiny's Child. As a result of her rebellion, a perfect blend of contemporary and classic was formed, as Shannon integrated gospel teachings of her Southern Baptist education. From teenage home recordings to a deal with Universal Republic, Shannon has never lost sight of her target—or, rather, targets. “I only had three major goals growing up,” she reveals. “The first one was a record deal, the second was singing a jingle for Diet Coke, and the third was diving with great whites.” She smiles warmly. “Only two more goals to go!” She will peform Friday, July 4 at 6:00 p.m

STL’s biggest Hip hop superstar Nelly was one of the several who performed at Tuesday’s 8th Annual BET Awards in Los Angeles. He performed his newest single “Steppe don My J’s” with J Dupri and Ciarana nd then followed with his last single, “party people,” with Fergie. From OUTTOWN's point of view, the Nellster got more pub for performing without his shirt exposing his guns and abs than his actual performance. Nelly himself even mentioned about his performance eat the televised After Parrty segment of the Bet AWArds on the couch with Big Tigga. He pretty much said that Alicia Keys had teh performance of the night and thought that the Supremes were going to follow the guests of Alicia’s SWV, En Vogue and TLC. He was quoted as saying. “That (Alicia Keys) performance was my highlight. I was just glad there was time that lapsed form that performance to my performance. “ As far as the awards, the only nod Nelly received was for Life of Da Party Award, a Pre Award Show Award for his video “Party people,” but lost to Flo Rida’s, “Low.” (which ironically speaks on women who wear Nelly’s Applebottom jeans). On Monday,
Nelly along with his suga wuga Ashanti, Jermaine Dupri and Jill Scott were among those who gathered Monday at Vibiana -- a majestic church built in 1876 -- for a private dinner hosted by Black Entertainment Television chairman Debra Lee which was touted as the BET Awards pre-party.

And lastly, the STL world lost a true treasure when the beloved nightclub fixture affectionately called “The Rose Man” was shot and killed Monday. At 5:12 a.m. (Monday, June 23), Lee Nixon a.k.a. The Roseman was pronounced dead at Saint Louis University hospital after an individual fired shots into The Soft Touch Lounge, a Metro East nightclub, and one of the bullets struck him in the head.

“I really wanted him to move away from St. Louis because of all of the violence,” Nixon’s sister Gloria said. “But he said that he couldn’t leave because the people loved him so much and he loved the people.

According to Gloria Nixon, it was the murder of one of Lee’s next door neighbors and the shooting injury of the person living in the house on other side of him that had her concerned for her brother’s safety.

“I am relieved - though not relieved - that it was random and not an attack against him,” Nixon said. “It is insanity to just shoot at people you don’t have a grudge against.”

One other person was injured in the shooting that reportedly stemmed from a disgruntled clubgoer in retaliation to being ejected from the club by a bouncer.
Lee was caught in the crossfire.

“He regretted that he had to sell them, he wished that he could give them away because they bring so much joy to people,” Nixon said. “I regret Lee being a victim to this because he was the most wonderful person I’ve ever known.”

UPDATE: The Roseman’s WAKE will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, June 27 at Austin Layne Renaissance, 7302 West Florissant. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 28 at Friendly Temple, 5544 Dr. Martin Luther King Dr.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Illinois State Police or St. Louis-area Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-8477.
