ATMOSPHERE

EVENT-VIEWZ. I checked out some of the Hollis Thomas Foundation's evenst that went down starting last Wednesday with their monthly Wine Down Wednesday event, held at brick Mortor near the Loft, a networking event with free drinks and food. I got therre about 9 ish (I didnt realize it started at 7 p.m.) . I get therre and go to teh den area wheer I saw Maxine Elbert, the prez of the Hollis Foundation with some of her colleagues. I gave her a smooches kiss and she told me that the party was happneing on the side of the spot. Therre were some sistas at the table counting names of people who were on the RSVp list. They were excpeting donations as well to go to the Foundation to help educate inner city youth (I gave acouple of dollaz).
So when I walked toward the party area, I was suprised of the small crowd. I was expecting a packed crowd like the last one I attended two months agao at the Midwest Salon on West Florrsiant, but as I discovered, the event began at 7 p.m. insted of 9 p.m. (the rainy conditions probably deterred a few people as well).
I ran into Freeman Bosley perosnality Darrion Phelps and former perosnality Nicci Roach who I was speaking with on how the show has chanegd without Roach leaving the show. Phelps then qupped to me that he was going to call me to do some of Nicc at Nine (I'm still waitin BTW. LOL) . I also ran into Hollis Thomas, the Philly Eagles defensive tabckle, who I took of pic of he and his sis Maxine, who runs his foundation. It was my first time meeting him and he seem like acool dude (I was trippin of fof of the pierecd ring under his bottom lip!)
The food was good. They had the usual chicken and meatballs, but they also had crab, fruit tray and all of the FREE booze you can handle. The music was OK. The usual hip-hop and old school jams. Around 10ish, Maxine picked out winners of the two bottles of wine and then said goodbye to the crowd they had to close up shop. Also in the house were politician Zaki Baruti and First Civilizations' Ira Jones.
On Thursday, I checked out its Urban Glam Fashion show that was held at the Glass Factory on Delmar. I got therre about 7sish (I knew the show wasnt going to start exactly at 7 cause I know how it is to do a show). I went up to the desk inside the building and tehre were two sistas in front of me who was asking ho wmuch it cost to get in and the lady at the table said, '25 dollas." the two sistas lookD at each other as though someone had took their tops off. They laughed in shock and proceeded to make a phone call to some1ne about the situation (They eventaully got in) . I gave the lady my name and another lady walked up to the table and I told them who I was and who I knew (Maxine), the second lady walked back to the backstage area and then came back in a couple of minutes and asked what was my last name. I said, "Atkins.' She said it was OK for me to come through.
I walked around in the loby area which was beautuflly decorated with colorful tables. The building also had many glass designs that were blown by glassmakers(which were making glass on the far end of the building with their dog as in WOOf WOOF up in therre!). I went to another room wherr the fashion shwo wa sand sa wthat a few people were sitting in therre seats. I saw that some peopel had programmes and I asked a lady next to me where she got hers and she said that she got it at the table entrance. So, I walked back to the table to get a program and proceeded to get me some food at the table (the drinks were bnot free at this spot). I got me a table and saw photographer and former St Louis American colleague Wiley Price up in the mix and I greeted him with "elbow dap." Also in the house was the RFT street team who were taking pics of the crowd.
After I ate, I walked back into the room to get ready for the show. Seats were gettin filled and I saw that the football players that were invited to be apart of the foundation events also arrived. they were Keith Davis and Patrick Crayton of the Dallas Cowboys; Fred Weary, Jacoby Jones and Alfred Malone of the Houston Texans; Will Smith (no not the movie star), Randy Hymes of the Minnesota Vikings, Mike McKenzie, Charles grant and Willie Whitehead of the New Orleans Saints, Khary Campbell of the Washington Redskins, Lawrence Vickers of the Cleveland Browns and Cortez Hankton Kenneth Pettway of the Jacksonville Jacquars. When they arrived, the Foundation members had some of the first row to sit in rows behind the front so the players could sit along with Hollis.
The show started about 8 . It was "Rip the Runway meets Da Hood." There were over 20 models altogether who particpated (I can just imagine how backstage was with all that exchanging and changing clothes!) Another interesting thing was the football players kept getting drink after drink after drink (except for Hollis who was maintaining the leader of the crew) ) and after each drink they consumed, the more they were acting as though they were in a strip club barking and heckling at the female models (One football player even got on all fours walking up to one of the models like a dog!)
The show, hosted by STL comedienne Carmen, had clothes featured by Jus Hollis Closet, Fat Cat and the Hollis thomas Clothing collection (for the guys). The mdoels ranged from thin to plus size as well as runway types to "uncle and them " gettin their strut on.
Talent included rappers Rick Rick Koran, singers Renata (the highlight) who sang some gospel as well as Beyonce;s "Listen" and Suave (who lip synched) , and poet Haki Natwua.
Other highlights:
*The "uncle and nem "male models who repped the hood boys threw dollaz up in the air to make it rain on the runway.
*The best secne wa sthe ALL Black party where the men and women came out to the runway in black outfits and got sexy with each other!
*One thick madam walked on the runway and fell (helped by one of the football players) but she got up and started struttin as though nothin happened. The crowd gave her a round of applause for her fortitude. And, one of teh models had a bathing suit made out of Skittles!

*During the finale, one of the runway type male models walked onto the runway with soem females and he only wore some LOWWWWWWWWWWW ride jeans and you can see his crack of dawn!
Overall the show was enjoyable.
