TIME TO GET ‘TOWNED.
As we enter the second week within Women’s History Month, we continue to celebrate the women from the ILLI and MO who have made significant contributions to the arts. This week, we highlight poet/educator Maya Angelou.
Maya Angelou (born Marguerite Ann Johnson in St. Louis, 1928),] is an American memoirist and poet. She has been called "America's most visible black female autobiographer". She is best known for her series of six autobiographies. The first, best-known, and most highly acclaimed, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, (1969), brought her international recognition and was nominated for a National Book Award. Her volume of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie (1971) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Angelou has had a long and varied career, holding jobs such as fry cook, dancer, actress, journalist, educator, television producer, and film director. She was a member of the Harlem Writers Guild in the late 1950s. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and served as Northern Coordinator of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. King's assassination inspired her to write her first autobiography.
Angelou has had a successful career as a playwright and actress. In 1977, she appeared in a supporting role in the television mini-series Roots. Her screenplay, Georgia, Georgia (1972), was the first original script by a black woman to be produced. In 2008, Angelou wrote poetry for and narrated the M. K. Asante, Jr. film The Black Candle. She is one of the most honored writers of her generation, earning an extended list of honors and awards, as well as over thirty honorary degrees.
Since 1991, Angelou has taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as recipient of the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies. In 1993, she recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy's in 1961. Since the 1990s, Angelou has had a busy career on the lecture circuit, making about 80 appearances a year. Angelou has been highly honored for her body of work, including being awarded over 30 honorary degrees. In 1995, she was recognized for having the longest-running record (two years) on The New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Bestseller List.
Talk about life imitating art and irony. Last weekend, a story broke out reports that St. Louis based comedian/actor Joe Torry allegedly got into a fight with Chi-town female comedian, Vanessa Fraction. Last week, Fraction claimed that Torry reportedly beat her while they were in Japan for a comedy tour recently. The former Def Comedy Jam Host, Joe Torry is denying all reports and claims by Fraction. Instead he is saying that she is the wild one and that she got in his face and scratched him up.
Other comedians that were supposedly on that same tour and present during the suspected altercation are not speaking out. Although Torry was reportedly held by Military police for a short time while in Japan, no charges were filed and both have since returned to LA. Fraction is claiming that she will reportedly be filing civil charges against Joe Torry in LA court very soon (She was not able to file in Japan).
Wow, if this is true, its “Chrihanna” all over again and , Torry is recapturing his most famous film role of Chicago in the film, “Poetic Justice: when his girlfriend, played by Regina King clowned him for being “limp” and punched her in the face (and the irony is the woman in real life is Fraction is from Chicago.). On a side note, Torry is a subscriber and frequents regularly on Facebook chatting it up with friends (We even chatted with him on and off, more recently about Japan and the city). Hmm, he seems as though nothing is goin’ on. We hope it is not true, though!
Last weekend, St. Louis hosted the Missouri Valley Conference at the Scott Trade Center. According to reports, the official attendance for the championship game was 9,136, which ranks 10th since the tournament made St. Louis the permanent single site in 1991.That brought the total attendance for five sessions to 54,369, which ranks fifth. The last time the tournament drew fewer than 60,000 to all five sessions was 2005, when 53,342 were counted.Top draw was 2007 (84,057), followed by 2008 (64,551), 2006 (63,739) and 2003 (62,007). Televised on CBS, Northern Iowa got it done working overtime Sunday in the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament when the 23-10 Panthers clinched a place in the NCAA Tournament by shading Illinois State 60-57. Meanwhile, Osiris Eldridge of Illinois State became only the second player from a second-place team to win the Most Outstanding Player Award in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
In other sports newz, , the St. Louis Cardinals and second baseman Skip Schumaker endured their roughest defensive day of camp Sunday in a 9-8 loss to Florida. But a scary moment occurred in the first inning in which first baseman Albert Pujols nearly got trampled in a mishap that required Marlins third baseman Wes Helms to vault El Hombre to avoid full contact. Pujols still took a foot near his left ear that dropped him to his knees.
Pujols walked and singled after the incident and played down any lingering problem.
"I got hit in the head, I stayed in the game,'' he reportdley said to the press. "That's all it was. I'm OK." He required attention from the training staff before getting to his feet and staying in the game for five innings.
And in more sports newz that just broke Tuesday ST. Louis Rams Linebacker Orlando Pace was released from the organization. Pace, who was picked by the Rams in the 2007 draft, made seven consecutive Pro Bowls between 1999 and 2005 started in Super Bowls XXXIV and XXXVI for St. Louis. Rumor has it that Torry Holt is next. Hmmm, we wonder if therE will be a party for Pace’s farewell to St Louis cuz we in the STL social scene all know Pace know a thing or two about partying!
On the Clooney Watch: Actor George Clooney was spotted last Saturday at Lumière Place chillin at a private party in the VIP area for the movie crew for “Up in the Air” which is vbeing filmed here in St. Louis. Auditions for Season 13 of the hit reality show, “Americas Next Top Model” was held Saturday in St. Louis. Sponsored by the CW and KPLR 11, 150 area women auditioned for the chance to be America’s Next Top Model. This year, casting directors were looking for females between the ages of 18-27, of diverse backgrounds, shapes, and sizes and a height of 5’ 7” or UNDER, a first for the show (We are sure the Eva the Diva Pigford help to create the height standard with her winning in 2004 and being only 5’ 7”) The audition was held at St. Louis College of Health Careers in Fenton (Man, they couldn’t find a spot closer to the Lou?). The event featured taped catwalk and interviews for qualified applicants for the next season of America’s Next Top Model television program. Only the first 150 eligible applicants were guaranteed a taped audition. Two STL socialites made the finals to the next round. They were Notice me Award winner Leah B (ABOVE PIC)and Shannell H (BELOW PIC). Voting for the finalists can be done on http://www.cw11tv.com/pages/main

In other comic newz, last week, comic/actor Robin Williams had undergone heart surgery after he was admitted last Monday to at a South Florida hospital because the actor complained of shortness of breath. The actor postponed his comedy tour “Weapons of Self-Destruction” until the fall. The Oscar winner was planning to bring his tour to the STL to the Fox on March 30. Has “Diimora” jump the broom? Well sorta. According to reports, that St. Louis model/mogul Kimora Lee and Oscar nominated actor Djimon Hounsou got married in Benin. According to a source close to the pair, Kimora and Djimon were married last summer on a transcontinental trip to Hounsou’s native Benin, Africa; both Kimora and Djimon wore traditional dashikis; there were African drums, a traditional ceremony with dancers and even had a hut!” However later reports are now saying that their marriage might not be legal in the U.S., since she was still married to Simmons at the time. So, according to reports, Kimora is a bigamist, or in non-western cultural terms, a “polyandryst?

Former St. Louis American City Editor and TV personality Alvin Reid was a guest on NPR host Don Marsh’s “On Air:Radio Show” on 90.7 FM Tuesday. He was on a three guy panel talking about the shrinking economy in print journalism caused by the Internet dispensing news for free as oppose dto print that depend on ads and sales revenue to survive. Reid talked briefly about his own fate at the American when he was fired due to budget constraints a couple of weeks ago and said that he thanked everyone for their concern and that he was surprised within hours that it was reported that he had been let go that people called him with job offers. He said that he never really considered the offers until it hit him that offers were out there. On the prospects he said jokingly to Marsh, “I’m fine right now, but in afewmonths, I’ll let you know.”
Speaking of journalists, in the broadcast world, Not since former KSDK channel 5 weatherman Paul Goodloe has a weatherman is making a buzz in the STL, especially from the ladies in the STL (according to Tammie Holland on the Tony Scott Show recently). His name is Anthony Slaughter, 23, a meteorologist who came from the University of Missouri-owned NBC affiliate in Columbia KOMU arrived in St. Louis last month to forecast the weather on Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons, to lighten the load on chief meteorologist Mike Roberts. We did hear that he mad e a brief appearance at Stress Free Fridays at Sol last Friday for a few minutes to meet and greet his fans but had to roll to do the newz that following morning. We are sure we will see him doin’ many events on the STL scene as folk continue to inquire about him.
We are going to call this story “Stripped from the Stage.” Wassup with the owner of the gentleman’s club Penthouse in Sauget filing a lawsuit against a former employee for coaxing strippers and top customers to join their rival strip club. The owner, filed Tuesday against a former director—who was reportedly fired from Penthouse due to assaulting a customer-- of the its VIP room who now works for the Hollywood Showclub in Washington Park. The suit says that the former employee violated a confidentiality agreement and noncompete clause of his contract by getting a job at Hollywood and using the valuable information and training he got at Penthouse to recruit strippers and VIPs. Penthouse is asking a judge to order the former employee to return any information taken from Penthouse, to keep what he knows confidential and not to work at other clubs within 25 miles of its affiliates for a year. It also asks that he be prohibited from recruiting Penthouse customers or entertainers. Wow, we didn’t know there was such a law with strip clubs. Booty is booty. LOL
