GLAD TO BE BACK!
TIME TO GET ‘TOWNED!
As we conclude the week celebrating the significant artistic, social and political accomplishments during Women’s History Month from the Missouri and Illinois areas we highlight opera singer Grace Bumbry.
Grace Bumbry (born 4 January 1937), an American opera singer, was considered one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation, as well as a major soprano for many years. She was a member of an extraordinary and pioneering generation of singers who followed Marian Anderson (including Leontyne Price, Martina Arroyo, Shirley Verrett and Reri Grist) in the world of classical music and paved the way for future African-American opera and classical singers.
Bumbry was born in St Louis, Missouri, to a family of modest means. In a BBC radio interview she recalled that her father was a railroad porter and her mother a housewife. She graduated from the prestigious Charles Sumner High School, the first black high school west of the Mississippi. She first won a radio competition at age 17, singing Verdi's demanding aria "O don fatale" (from Don Carlo). One of the prizes for first place was a scholarship to the local music conservatory; however, as the institution was segregated, it would not accept a black student. Embarrassed, the contest promoters arranged for her to study at Boston University instead.
She later transferred to Northwestern University, where she met the German dramatic soprano and noted Wagnerian singer Lotte Lehmann, with whom she later studied at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, and who became her mentor in her early career. In 1958, she was a joint winner of the Metropolitan Opera auditions with soprano Martina Arroyo; later that year, she made her recital debut in Paris. Bumbry made her operatic debut in 1960 when she sang Amneris at the Paris Opéra; that same year she joined the Basel Opera.
She gained international renown when she was cast by Wieland Wagner (Richard Wagner's grandson) as Venus at Bayreuth in 1961, at age 24, the first black singer to appear there. The cast also included Victoria de los Ángeles as Elisabeth and Wolfgang Windgassen as Tannhäuser. Conservative Germans were appalled, and the ensuing furore in the media made her a cause célèbre internationally. She was subsequently invited by Jacqueline Kennedy to sing at the White House. (She returned to the White House in 1981, singing at the Ronald Reagan inauguration.) Having begun her operatic career on such a high note, hers was a rare one in which she never sang small or comprimario roles.
Bumbry made her Royal Opera House, Covent Garden debut in 1963; her La Scala debut in 1964; and her Metropolitan Opera debut as Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo in 1965. In 1964, Bumbry appeared for the first time as a soprano, singing Verdi's Lady Macbeth in her debut at the Vienna State Opera. In 1966 she appeared as Carmen in a celebrated production by Herbert von Karajan in Salzburg, opposite Jon Vickers.
More recently, she has also become known as a recitalist and interpreter of lieder, and as a teacher. From the late 1980s on, she seemed to concentrate her career in Europe, rather than in the US.
AND NOW ON TO THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT NEWZ:
Tens of thousands St. Patrick's Day attendees Irish and non-Irish alike joined together in Dogtown Tu to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the 26th annual Hibernian Parade in Soulard March 17. Due to construction on I-64, the route of the parade changed this year. Parade units assembled on the north side of Oakland Ave. on the east and west sides of Tamm Ave. The parade then went south on Tamm Avenue, past historic St. James the Greater Catholic Church, and dispersed at Lloyd Ave., south of the church.
Traffic was backed up on I-44 at all off ramps leading to Dogtown.
The parade featured one marching band, some bag pipe units and dozens of local Irish family clans. They marched with their family crests and with relatives - many of whom have flown in from all over just to march in the parade.
Revelers also got their drink on out in the public this year. Last year, the city had a ban on bringing alcohol into Dogtown . We haven’t heard of any major arrests (which we are sure there were) but some folk wasnt so lucky in the green when their cars towed when several cars parked their vehicles illegally at the St Louis Marketplace parking lot on Manchester and were towed.
The Missouri area was buzzin with NCAA—mazement! First, Mizzou came out to be the winner in last Fridiay;s NCAA Tourney game that was televised on CBS. They beat Cornell 78-59. Then on Sunday, Mizzou beat Marqutte 83-79. Mizzou (30-6) now advances to the West Regional semis to play Memphis on Thursday. Then Saturday, NCAA Wrestling Tourney 2009 Division I Wrestling Championships were held at Scott Trade Center where thousands attended in and out of towners for the event.
Last week, the PR team for St. Louis Cardinals ownership has released their "temporary" plans for the site of the Ballpark Village with a parking lot and a softball field on the site of their old Busch Stadium. The plan is described as "fan-friendly enhancements" that will occupy the property as the team continues its long push to finance Ballpark Village. In regards to the much delayed plan of a $365 million entertainment district, the release stated “ once the bonds for the larger Ballpark Village project are sold, the softball field and parking lot will be taken over by the construction of the larger project." Well, as long as there wont be a gaping hole for fans of the Boys of Summer when fans arrive for the All star game in July.
And Speaking of baseball, Clear Channel Radio, Fox 2 and J. Buck’s Restaurant downtown are teaming up to host Opening Day celebration Monday, April 6th at J. Buck’s downtown! The party will begin at 10am with live music from The Smash Band. There will be plenty of pre-game food, beverages and fun for everyone. Take pictures of a Budweiser Clydesdale from 11am to 1pm. Fredbird will be back for all the fun too! The celebration will be in the parking lot directly behind the restaurant at Clark & 10th street.
Time: 10am to First Pitch (3:15pm)
Affton High School was the center of location for the filming of George Clooney’s film, “Up in the Air” a couple weeks ago. A snow scene was developed through technicians from the company Snow Business. The company spread the fake snow in front of Affton High School. The special effects crew prepared for a scene to be shot with Clooney. Students were on SpringBreak during the filming.
Socialite/reality Paris Hilton was in the St. Louis area last weekend. The hotel heiress was in town last Saturday to promote her new fragrance , Fairy Dust’ at the Macy’s at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights where at least 500 fans snaked in a line in the store. The first 300 fans who purchased special gift bags with perfume for $184 or $129 could have their pictures taken with Hilton.Later that nite, Hilton was spotted at Burger Bar at Lumière Place eating on a chicken sandwich and a Cobb salad with ranch dressing(Damn she eats???!). Also, that folk was in a tizzy when they saw her walking through the casino. Our question is, was the cameras there filming this for her reality show , “My New BFF.”
In Chi-town newz, Chicago’s Jennifer Hudson is returning to American Idol making a special appearance on the highly-popular Fox series. She will perform not live, but in a taped segment to appear in an upcoming episode in April. In related news, accused murderer of Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew, William Balfour will not be released anytime soon from Illinois state prison. According to reports, he is being held without bail on the charges against Jennifer Hudson's family. It was speculated that Balfour, who murdered Hudson’s family members last October, was tentatively scheduled to be released from Stateville Correctional Center on April 7
The other big Chi-town story is The Tom Joyner Morning Show got newz Monday that its affiliate station in Chicago (WGCI-FM 107.5) would NO LONGER be heard in Chicago. According to reports, his ratings were POOR and the local radio station cancelled the show – replacing it with Steve Harvey’s Morning Show. Chicago is bouncing Tom Joyner's syndicated morning show after 13 years on WVAZ-FM 102.7 (the sister station), moving "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" from WGCI-FM 107.5 to replace it which began Tuesday.Harvey will simulcast on both stations until March 31. Clear Channel did not say Monday what its plans are after that for WGCI-FM. A Clear Channel spokeswoman said a replacement for Harvey on WGCI-FM will be named soon.
Joyner wants his Chicago fans to know that, even though Clear Channel has pulled "The Tom Joyner Morning Show" from WVAZ-FM 102.7, his program still will be available online "so this isn’t the end, it’s just a change." In the meantime, writing on his FlyJock blog Monday night, Joyner pointed Chicago listeners who have followed him for decades--the last 13 years on WVAZ-FM--to www.BlackAmericaWeb.com, where they can continue to hear his "Party With a Purpose."
Although Joyner's syndicated program is "heard in more than 100 markets around the country, Chicago is home, it’s the Mother Ship, the flagship, all those words that mean it is the place that launched the TJMS," he wrote. "It’s where we came from and where we always could go back to. And we’re still there, just in a different way—for now!"
UPDATE: On his program Wednesday, Joyner did mention that the Chicago station will still pay Joyner the rest of the money on his contract until the end of the year.
Speaking of Steve Harvey, Harvey made his way to the STL last weekend. First at a booksigning at left Bank Books in the Central West End for fans to sign his best selling self-help book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man.” According to reports, the line for Harvey (PICTURE BY CARLSTON EDWARDS) was lengthy from Left bank and going south of Euclid (e are sure his recent appearance on Oprah Winfrey show also helped increased the line). Only folk who purchased his book, got a ticket for tehri book be signed. Then on Saturday, he “tore people’s mouth out; when he performed at the Chaifetz Arena. Earlier that day, he was spotted on the casino floor of Lumiere Place getting his gamble on playing some high-limit video poker and roulette before leaving to do his show. No word on whether he won or lost or did sum cussin up in there. LOL.
STL rapper Chingy celebrated his 29th b-day last weekend at two different venues. First, he celebrated at Mocha Latte’s weekly Best Damned Fridays Period event at Lush. It was a free event wherr everybody was, well FREE. Special guests included Nelly, City Spud and rapper Kenny KNOX (SEE OUT 576 FOR PICS AND COVERAGE). On Saturday, Chingy got dapped up and celebrated at Home Nightclub inside Ameristar Casino in St. Charles at a party that was $10 bones for women and 20 ends for men. In attendance were Knox, Nelly and Spud and cagefighter champ Jermaine Andre. House DJ former Nelly producer Jay E was on the 1s and 2s. In unrelated Chingy newz, he can heard on the remix to STL rapper Yung Ro’s radio hit, ”Donk Dat Booty.”
R&B singer Bobby Valentine also came through at Lush Sunday for Mocha Latte’s weekly Sunday Night Shindig to meet and greet the fans. (SEE OUT 577 for pics and COVERAGE) We hear he got there at 1 Monday morning and his female fans were waiting eagerly to take pics with him and get an autograph. We hope err one was able to see him cuz he is shorter than a second. LOL
Speaking of Nelly, the superstar rapper was in Dubai, United Arab Emrates earlier this month to attend the opening of a new Applebottoms store (We guess Dubai women are allowed to wear his jeans under their garb. LOL). He also performed at the city’s Lodge Nightclub.

We can only suggest you tune in to Z107.7 FM to get details.
OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE: As we were chatting on Yahoo Messenger late Monday nite, we didn’t realize we we were YM friends with 19 year-old Memphis rapper Lil Will, who is signed to STL rapper/producer J Kwon’s label , Hood Hop Music. Why do you care? Well, we were bold enough to ask Will some questions while chatting about the rumors of J Kwon and about the alleged story reported by Get It Magazine in 2008 (and reported via stlhiphop.com) about the rapper’s mismanagement of his employees, using women for money, being a drug addict and going to jail for back child support. Well, we asked those questions, and this is what Lil Will had to say:
On the rumors that J Kwon didn’t pay his artists or employees at Hood Hop Music: “People like Kanecc (his biz partner at Hood Hop Music) started rumors wasn’t doing their job. Everyone that does what they ‘spos eto gets paid …Kanecc got fired.
On using women: “he ain’t do that. Dem women were going around promoting Kwon and stuff. He ain't ask them for nothing. They wer tryna use him.”
On the drug issue: “Kwon ain’t on drugs, Hell he snap on me if he even think I smoke on anything.
On the jail time: “Yeah, he went to jail for child support issues cuz he refused to pay.”
On suing the leaker of the allegations: “I don’t know if he did (sue_)but he should. He knew about them (allegations) . I told D Man (his cuzzin) and Gino (his brother). I think they told Kwon but we all knew they was coming for him.”
Well, allright. And You heard it first at OUTTOWN.
Is KSDK TV personality Deanne Lane quitting due to a supposed pay cut? Supposedly not according to Lane. As reported by Deb Peterson Columnist fo rteh St. Lousi Post Dispatch, Lane called the Post last Friday quell those rumors. She said, "I have not and would not balk at any pay cut, especially in this economy." She wouldn’t comment on the status of the matter. Lane, who’s been with KSDK for 25 years, also was responding to Peterson’s blog that Lane's contract will not be renewed when it expires in May. Rumors were that the station wants to cut Lane's salary if she stays on and that the high-profile anchor was not open to that idea. Hmmm. Well we guess we will find out in a couple of months, if earlier, if she makes her “announcement.”

We are not for sure, but we did hear her on most of last week on the show gabbin it up with Scott and Tammie Holland. In January, Parr moved up the corporate ladder when she was promoted to promotions director for the station.

According to reports from KMOX and the Post-Dispatch, a woman was stabbed at Attitude's Nightclub last Friday while coming out of the bathroom. An early morning stabbing left a female victim in the hospital and bar-goers shocked and confused. Police say the stabbing happened inside the Attitudes bar at Sarah and Manchester, and that the woman was stabbed while walking to the dance floor from the restroom. But Attitudes employees say otherwise. The bar's MySpace page claims the victim was stabbed in a nearby parking lot and came inside for help.
On an interesting note, on the Vital Voice website someone who is supposedly the woman who got stabbed gave her insights on the incident:
Submitted by juice314soco on Sat, 03/21/2009 - 9:29pm.
I am the woman that got stabbed INSIDE of ATTITUDES. Im makin this statement because Attitudes owner and staff have changed their story and lied about what happened. I felt like Attitudes was a home away from home and never would have I thought that Jan the owner would be so heartless. The first thing she said was did I do it to myself. Then asked marcus if it was 1 of ATTITUDES knifes. I don't appreciate the things that have been said by Attitudes. I am a victim of a stabbing. im still in the hospital in so much pain. I would like to know where this information about me came from...None of it is true other then I got stabbed... I appreciate Attitudes for calling the authorities and getting the paramedics there asap.... but what happened was not my fault and I will not be victimized again by ATTITUDES.... We are all supposed to be family and stick together and support each other not turn our backs and lie to cover a tragic situation.
Wow this is definitely beyond….

KMJM personality Tammi Holland sent OUTTOWN an uplifting email from dress collector Tracie Ousley. It reads:There have been a lot of parents that have lost their jobs and have daughters that may not be able to participate in a day that you can never get back, their senior prom. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking," what can I do to make a difference." As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. "I can start a collection and give back to the community." So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea. So here we are.
